I found B&A after an exhaustive Yelp search and speaking to a few tax preparers on the phone. Of…read moreall the ones I spoke with, B&A seemed the most "with it." I worked directly with David, who was all business and answered every question I had. David's a bit old school (likes to work with paper, which is fine) so just make sure you connect with the office's admins if you want to send your documents electronically in advance of your in-person meeting with your tax preparer. Note: In prior years I used Turbo Tax, but as my taxes have gotten more complicated over the years, I had less confidence that I was doing them correctly via TT, so I felt a lot better working with a real person at B&A. If you're willing to pay a few hundred bucks to have your taxes done right, B&A is the way to go in the Arlington/Alexandria area.

However this past year he dodged my emails/phone calls, my husband's emails/phone calls, and my elderly mother's emails/phone calls (we all file separately). He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. I don't know what is going on and while I wish Steven no ill will, please do not work with this firm or him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

I was more than satisfied with their explanation and eagerness to earn my business and trust. I've taken them up on the offer to work with them so have updated the review initially and provide a final review once completed. ______________________________ Let me say the reason I reached out to Capitol CPA is because of their excellent reviews and they were my first pick. However, it's difficult to go with a company or trust them with your taxes when they can't even respond to you in a timely manner or at all. Let me detail my experience below: December 16, 2019: Send an inquiry through their website asking about availability for new clients. Receive a response from Steven that they're currently evaluating their capacity and will get back to me in a week. I respond immediately asking if I should follow up in a week or if they'll let me know? *CRICKETS* December 26, 2019: Ask for an update. Hear nothing, follow up with an inquiry through their website December 31, 2019: Receive a response from Steven apologizing for letting this slip through the cracks. They have room for new clients and ask for information. I respond an hour later with the information. *CRICKETS* January 19, 2019: Another follow up. Ask for an update. *CRICKETS* January 31, 2019: I give up. I reached out to three other companies and they immediately responded, asked for my tax information which I provided, and... immediately responded. So thank you Capitol CPA for wasting my time.

What really sets them apart is their proactive approach. They don't just file your return and call it a day; they take the time to explain every option and have helped us strategize for the following year so we always feel prepared. The best part is that it doesn't feel like a typical tax preparation office. It's the kind of high-level expertise you'd expect from a large firm, but with a genuine, family feel that makes you feel like a priority. The pricing is very reasonable for the quality of service they provide. If you're looking for a reliable and trustworthy team that truly understands the business side of things and thinks about your future, TPI is an excellent choice. I can't recommend them enough. This was a very disappointing experience. Mike and his team were recommended by our financial…read moreconsultant and were highly regarded. But the whole experience was unprofessional and ultimately unhelpful when it came to doing our actual taxes. First, I didn't hear anything from them for a couple of weeks after our initial meeting. It required me following up to get an update. And then I had specifically asked for a heads up on whether we were likely to owe any taxes, since we were self-employed the past year and unclear whether we were paying sufficient estimated taxes. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. I would not recommend working with these folks. They seem like nice enough people but were either overwhelmed this tax season or understaffed. Either way, that exactly what you count on a tax account to be prepared for and they clearly failed.

First, they charged me $250 for a basic filing service that most other professionals offer for around $100. Unfortunately, the inflated price did not come with better service -- quite the opposite. The office itself is filthy and poorly maintained, which should have been a red flag. The accountant simply gave me advice to handle my case with the Tax dept. that created serious issues for me and then completely disappeared. I tried to contact him more than 10 times over the course of 17 days with no response. My emails and messages were ignored until the deadline to submit my documents had already passed. Only after the deadline did the secretary message me saying I should solve my problems on my own -- because the accountant is on vacation. When I voiced my frustration about the lack of response, the secretary actually hung up on me. They were okay only until I made the payment -- after that, they acted like I no longer mattered. "the photo attached explains a lot." The accountant also carries himself with an arrogant, dismissive attitude -- as if he's doing clients a favor just by responding. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this level of unprofessionalism, neglect, and disrespect deserves to be called out. I would not recommend this office to anyone.
