It's a porn shop with average prices and extremely messed up pot holes in the parking lot, so please be careful. I give it a 4 because they always had a good selection (not that I would know), and were always friendly. I would stop in here with my gf on the way to or from the awesome drive in movies. It's clean and nice inside, though nothing like the posh hipstery feel of Adultmart downtown for example. But definitely not too creepy. Or maybe it's creepy. You'll find out when you go here. The store has DVDs and VHSs, everything from classics to new releases. There's a white board on the wall listing the most popular rentals. It's a great place to find something you can't stream on Netflix. It also give you the opportunity to browse the whole selection and find things outside what has been "recommended" for you, which is one of the reasons I love bookstores. The owner is very friendly and quite an interesting guy and worth chatting with. The store has been there 28 years. I've been driving past it for well over a decade and this was my first time in. At first the place seems very no frills, but once you start chatting with the proprietor, it becomes quite charming. Rentals are $2.99 for 4 days. New releases are 2 days. Late fees are $1 a day (less than the library) but the owner says they're pretty flexible about it - just bring the movie back. There's a 24 hr drop box. While everything is entered into a computer, there's also a little basket of paper slips from inside the movie cases that appear to have the rental history, like your childhood school library. The discs and cassettes are all behind the counter and labeled by hand in different colors. For folks who don't often venture into South Buffalo, you should come visit and support this rare gem.

When I visit this store, it's like I'm in middle school again, and it's a Friday night, and I get to pick out a movie or two to stay up late and watch. It's TOTALLY a nostalgia thing. Most of the stock is in VHS (which is amazing in and of itself, especially in this day and age) but there are some DVDs too. This is my most favourite place in Rochester to rent those old, hard-to-find titles (some of which never even came out on DVD!) And the display setup they've got going there makes any film/media geek drool. It's not every day you get to see a LaserDisc player up close and personal. The owner is a great, personable guy and really interesting to talk to. The place wouldn't be what it is without him. If you want to relive the past and step into a time warp, check Hyatt's out, and rent a video or two while you're there. Someday places like this will all be gone...and yeah, I love netflix as much as the next person, but there is just something about the video rental store experience that you can't duplicate in watching a streaming video. We go here once every couple of months, at least, and whenever we can't find one of those old obscure movies we remember watching when we were young but can't find anywhere. When you can't even find it ONLINE...Hyatt's usually has it.

It's really nice that if you are looking for something they don't have, you can create an account on their site and save your search so that you will be informed if it comes in to any store. It's also nice that they will transfer your items to any store you wish for free for pickup. It's unfortunate though, that quality control is pretty poor across the chain. I've ordered CDs and received discs that are scuffed or otherwise less than mint. Yes, their business is in used merchandise and used merchandise is often not perfect, but there is no disclosure of condition at all. They seemingly cater to collector types, so I think that is an omission that should be addressed.

Wayne takes pride in the memorabilia he has on the walls and shelves, as he should! Each piece he collects has a story that's worth hearing. The walls are covered in artwork by local artists, concert posters of famous bands who performed locally, and some really fun stuff too, like a drawing by Bono that his friend gave him! Cool Beat has an awesome collection of vinyl. Both new and old and all different genres. The store is super organized and every artist/ record was easy to find. Wayne is always working on getting new music in so always check back in from time to time to find something new. He also sells cds, 45s, posters, and other retro Buffalo/ music related items. His store seriously has a great collection and his prices are extremely fair in comparison to other record stores in the area. He also has a stamp card to get $5 off when you spend $50. All in all, Cool Beat is hands down the best place to come if you truly appreciate music and want to support local business.
