I was looking for a simple Nokia replacement for my elderly father. For €45.00 I purchased a rather worn Nokia. However because it comes with a 2 year warranty I thought, well it must be a good phone. To my utter disbelief when I went to put the SIM card in I learnt those purchasing aren't getting value for money. I opened the back, it was absolutely filthy. They hadn't even bothered to clean the inside. Upon turning it on the phones memory hadn't been wiped either. Nobody bothered to set the factory reset button. I returned it immediately, I got my money back but I will not be going anywhere near CeX again. Honestly I thought you had a good reputation. I was able to buy a brand new Nokia 610 in a store a few hundred meters away. AVOID

The best way is to get in early, and browse at your own leisure. Second-hand phone prices are insanely expensive, especially for anything with an Apple logo on it. Even someone with not a lot of money can find something here, as their game prices start at just 20 cent! That said, the issues are a problem: 1) Opening hours. Despite the fact that the staff members are often in the building 10-20 minutes ahead of time, they seem incapable of sticking to their 10am opening time. 2) New arrivals of stock are often not placed on sale until the following day, which renders the "check stock" function of their website pretty useless when you can't find what you're looking for. 3) Disorganized queue system. There could be as much as five people behind the counter, and only two of them will actually operate the registers. 4) Disorganized stock. Shelves can go for more than a week without being alphabetized or cleaned. Recently, a chocolate bar was left on one of the shelves, and two days later, it was still there. 5) Suspect buying practices. Three times now, I have been witness to staff members accepting shrink-wrapped products. True, the seller was asked to open the seal on these items prior to the purchase being made, but 18 copies of the same new release DVD, from the same seller, under these conditions?? 6) Price changes. This happens constantly, but the staff never seem to update the price tags, which confuses a lot of people. 7) No phone number on their website. Imagine this; you're travelling from Cork to Dublin and this store has something you're looking for. How can you reserve it when they don't provide a phone number? They have one, they just won't give it to most customers. So in closing, definitely visit here, but do it before noon because the stock will usually be in a jumbled-up state!

Essentially because there's so much stuff there you have to accept that you'll go for a wander to find the thing you need. Currently lego is right by the door, then its boys stuff, girls stuff, baby stuff and bigger things like bikes down the end (also computer games down the end if you want to by a treat for yourself while you're there!). On my latest visit I felt a bit bewildered on entering, but I still came out with the right toys that were needed... and also a jigsw for me that it could be argued that I did not need. Anyway I'm not sure if its the lack of little people that I need to buy toys for but I usually find myself pleasantly surprised with the prices at smyths. As a special bonus this particular store opens really late at Christmas - until 11pm I think, so if you need to buy toys but can't cope with children around its a godsend!

(From a kid's perspective) the buildings were towering goliaths filled from floor to ceiling with toys, books, games and bikes. I thought every adult had to be an idiot for not wanting to work here. I now cannot think of a worse place to work. Screaming toddlers runing around in danger of scraping knees and bumping foreheads while mothers argue with their mothers about who's buying their little precious a Ben 10 wristwatch. That being said, Smyths is still one of the best toy shops in the country. They have an enormous amount of stock and their customer service is great. Not only that, they also have a 'software zone' which is pretty good for computer games and consoles. I do sometimes go into the Smyths back home for a bit of a nostalgic time wasting. Just not at Christmas. NEVER at Christmas.
