My favorite game store in Maine and it's not even close. Super clean and smells very nice, which can be rare for a game store. Board game and warhammer selection are particularly massive. Huge and beautiful decorated game room with playing tables for Warhammer, Battletech, Magic, D&D, etc. They have a bank of Gashapon machines that entertain my 9 year old daughter for 10 minutes so I can shop in peace while she figures out which one she wants to put tokens into. Been in probably 100 times over the years for tournaments or to browse through their massive selection and despite what the negative reviews say I have never seen the owner or staff be rude to anyone. Literally never. I have however on many occasions seen gamers stand at the register and want to chat with them for 20 minutes about their life story and I've seen the staff have to cut them off to help the next person in line, which is not rude at all it's completely reasonable. PRO TIP: If you go into a business don't expect the staff to always be able to chat with you for 10 minutes about your favorite hobby as they have product to order, shelves to stock, online orders to process, and other customers to attend to. It is a business after all and they are working. Based on my experiences here I tend to think many of these negative reviews are from super nerds who don't have enough social awareness to understand that they can't consume 20 minutes of a staff members time with chit chat or that perhaps their trade in item isn't as rare and valuable as they think it is. Ignore the bad reviews, go in for yourself and I think your experience will be very similar to mine. read more

This place is a horrible place. The store owner is rude . His employees are not actually knowledgeable about anything they sell . The store is overpriced and overrated. The selection is not great. Everything they sell can be found for better prices at half a dozen different places in the area aswell as online. I truly believe they should go out of business. The Warhammer 40,000 selection is much larger than that of the actual Warhammer store in Portland. The owner is kind and gave me advice on building my army! Some of the reviews are low but I've seen the customers who have been exceedingly rude, don't look at the negative reviews on this guy because he's been kind and charismatic to me through and through!! read more

My wife and I were in town hoping to move to the area soon. We stopped in hoping to get some information on the local area, maybe make a friend, and buy some nerdy stuff. The guy almost refused to interact with us and I don't think he looked up at me once. It was like the guy wanted to pull off a crappy Dante Hicks bit but at least Dante cared about his job or something. It was the single rudest worst human interaction of my life. Game Citadel on Broadway in Bangor has a history of repeatedly being condescending, rude, abrasive, and downright unpleasant to customers since it's inception in 2009, give or take a yese or two. My wife, mother in-law, and brother in-law (who spend good money there on a weekly basis) experienced the owner's blatantly callous, dismissive, and superior attitude firsthand, simply upon asking a question about their second location. After hearing the snarky, sarcastic responses, and the laughter between the owner and his gaming buddies, my family left, embarrassed, and angry. NEEDLESS to say, neither they, nor myself will be shopping there in the future. This post will probably not come as a shock to those in the community who do D&D, Warhammer, Pathfinder, MtG, etc. as there are quite a few scathing reviews, but this is frankly, pretty disgusting behavior. To the owner: For what reason would a local hobby store treat their clientele this way? Are you telling me that you do so much business that you can afford to turn customers away? Is it to feel better about yourself? Is it that you just don't like interacting with people? Seems like you're in the wrong line of work. Be less terrible in the future. How you've stayed in business this long is BEYOND me. Might be due to the fact you're the only hobby store in town. read more

Would have been a great place to game if I hadnt been kicked out of the games room because they have a rule there saying that if youre not in a game in the room with the gaming table youre not allowed to be in there. So you cant even ask to join a game because to do so youd have to "loiter" in their special place. Do not go. read more

Very impressed with the selection of board games, Dungeons & Dragons books, and Pathfinder books! Loved seeing games I had not seen other places before. Made some great discoveries. One odd thing was the way they price and organize their single Magic Cards. We had to ask for the price of each single card we were interested in under the glass--they weren't labeled--and they don't have binders to look through. You sort of have to know what cards you're looking for. The employee was helpful and patient. Would definitely go back many times if we lived in the area. read more

This place is great for the retro gaming enthusiast, the prices are fair and there is a decent selection of NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1 games. And they are at great prices, I got a copy of hogans alley for 7 dollars. However, I do wish they had more n64 games, as they only had one. But I really can't complain due to the prices that they had there. I cannot recommend this place enough for game collectors looking for a deal. read more

I went in some time ago with $1000 in my pocket to buy MTG cards and some other miscellaneous items, but the guy behind the counter was quite rude to me (on more than one occasion), and by my third attempt to go in and buy something and get treated rudely by the staff, I gave up. I'm sure your selection is good, and your prices aren't terrible, but your staff absolutely sucks. Hadn't thought to leave a review at the time, but it's better late than never I guess. read more

This is not your average game store. Game Citadel offers, in my experience, the widest variety of console games (new and old), tabletop board games, tabletop miniatures, and card games. The first time I ever came to the store I was left to browse at my leisure without some sale being shoved down my throat, or some employee at my heels, and when I had questions and wanted to purchase the customer service was down to earth, friendly, and real. Within a few visits I knew each employees name, I knew the regulars of the shop, and with little effort I became part of what I consider the best community in Bangor for gaming. I have been a customer at Game Citadel for 4 years. I have seen other game stores rise and fail. Sure, I shop at Gamestop and Bullmoose too, but there is only one place I shop when I am looking for something more collectible, more important. What I love most about this store is the personality. Tt isn't controlled by impersonal calculations. The owner and the employees are exactly who they are in everyday life. They aren't wearing some mask for customers. There are always complaints though, and sadly they are usually from the same type of person. They complain when customer service is too overbearing, then complain when customer service won't ask them their life story a few seconds after walking in. They want a store that can be manipulated, who fears a customer yelling, but Game Citadel is none of those things. The employees and owner of this store stand of for their players, for themselves, and for the community. I will always support this store, even after I move far away one day, because they have become family to me. read more

I've had a very negative experiences at this (mostly) card store. Unless you are exclusively there as a customer or as a participant in an event (fee required), there is a "mandatory" fee of $5 to be in the gaming area (posted on wall). Such a thing is unheard of for a gaming store, and always made me feel unwelcome. The store owner often omits this fee for regular customers, but only on a selective basis. On the last day that I visited the store, its owner (Shawn A.) entreated me to trade with him. After he looked through my card binder and selected cards from it, he cited buy prices. When I told him that I wasn't interested in selling the cards (buy prices were very low), he said that I would not be allowed to bring my cards into the store unless I accepted his offer. I put away my things and left with my friend who witnessed the entire incident. read more

Rude staff who are completely happy to ignore you unless you go face to face in front of them, even then they barely acknowledge you and mumble. Not friendly or helpful at all. Simpson's "Comic Book Guy" anyone? Customers are also quite callous and cliquish. Selection's good, and prices are typical for MSRP, but no real discounts or deals. I want to support local game businesses, because I am a gamer..... However, I am ashamed that nerd culture has this store tarnishing the good name of card game hobbyists everywhere. I went to Game Citadel on Monday, October 9 at 4pm or so... I had just opened a mtg pack and pulled a hostage taker.. A card with a trade value of around $16 and shop credit of $14+. What offer and condition did the man on staff say? $11..... Saying it was moderately played.... I had just opened it and left in the card pack to sell it. Extreme nonsense and when the staff saw how unhappy I was he said, "Well we don't have to buy it.." It was said in the most degrading tone and my anger just that much worse.. But then spoke friendly to another customer this staff member must have known. Lastly this isn't first time I had been treated this way. I dont know who trains Game Citadel employees, and if they have no clue how treat people with respect or it's that they just don't care, but I have told everyone I know about how I was treated. So, me nor my family nor my friends will never grace your doors again. I don't understand how Game Citadel is still here, but the far more kind and fun next level gaming, or 3 geek had to leave and left us with this garbage. read more

Went there with cards in hand and an eagerness about me. What I was met with was a rude staff, $5 buy in just to stay there and play games, and some of the things I was trying to sell was so low balled it was almost insulting, to which I might add some of the staff was. When walking into Game Citadel, you want to feel like you, the customer, is right. However when I walked in to sell some of my rare Magic cards, I was not only greeted with a waft of smoke from the owner smoking, I was told that what I had was not worth anything and that he wouldn't even bother; even though I knew that they were worth a few dollars. I was also told that if I was to stay there I needed to buy something, minimum of $5. Later when I went to buy something, I waited for 20 minutes while he searched the store for the item I was trying to purchase (which should have been ready, as I had called ahead for the item). After he gave up searching for it, another employee, who was off duty, found the item in the back. The owner had forgotten where he had put it and neglected to stock his shelves with the items in question. With the level of unprofessional behavior and lack of manners this store presents, I give them only one star, purely because I can't give them a worse score. If you want to buy Magic The Gathering, Warhammer 40k, or anything other game supplies, go somewhere... anywhere else. Do not go here. THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE THEIR CUSTOMERS! read more
