I know in Italy you are supposed to take your time. We just wondered when and if they would ever take our order. Then when we were done eating, we got nervous as we were waiting for our check. Hard rain was going to drop any moment and we had no umbrellas or jackets. The food at Upupa is excellent. It's simple, has vegetarian options, and offers a little more fare than the typical Italian pasta dishes. For appetizer we got the Zucca E Verza (grilled pumpkin with sauteed cabbage and pine nuts). It was like warm salad on top of a pumpkin pancake. For our entrees we shared the Filetto Mignon Al Rockfort (fillet of veal with rockfort sauce and baby onions) and a Calzone Ripieno. The veal was tender and had a nice sauce and came with tiny onions the size of raisins. The calzone had spicy salami in it and was decorated with a heart design of tomato sauce. The pumpkin flan was a true experience of sweet and savoriness. I couldn't stop eating the ratatouille; it was such a delicious treat. From the moment we arrived, the owner, Marco, made us feel genuinely welcome. He explained that the food is Sicilian and quite different from what you typically find in Venice, which was exactly what we were hoping for after days of similar menus. The menu is short, focused, and built around family recipes. We ordered the pasta of the day, the roast beef, and the smoked salmon dish, and every single item was fantastic. To finish, we had limoncello made by Marco's mother, and it was absolutely delicious. What really made the evening special was Marco and his family. They were warm, kind, and genuinely happy to share their story with us. We loved hearing about his late father and the lasting impact he had on both the family and the restaurant. One of the most memorable parts of the night was joining in the restaurant tradition of coloring pictures and exchanging them with drawings already hanging on the ceiling. We ended up taking home a picture created by a family member, and it will be making the journey back with us to Carlsbad, California. Without a doubt, this was the best dining experience of our entire trip through Europe. Highly recommended!!
