My friend, who is an artist, introduced me to this place, and she says that CAW has a strong reputation in the art community. I have zero art background, but I have taken drawing and photography classes here. All the teachers were friendly, enthusiastic, and well-prepared. I felt like I learned a lot and that the teachers were encouraging of beginners. They have a huge variety of classes here including cool stuff I'd like to try like metal sculpture. There are both short workshops (good for artists who are already well-versed in a topic but want to pick up a new technique) and longer classes. The cost is a little pricey, but well-worth it in my opinion. They also have an exhibition space and show really nice artwork there. This past summer, my friend and I went to see a juried show there and it was very good. The Creative Arts Workshop is a fantastic place to learn art and join an artistic community. I can't recommend it highly enough.

In the Perspective Drawing of Buildings and Architecture workshop, Eric March introduced strategies, gave students a chance to experiment, and consulted individually to discuss what works for each person and how to expand skills. His presentation was clear, and his comments were gentle and specific. For me, as a non-professional with some drawing experience, the class was engaging and informative - a delightful way to spend two afternoons. Being able to see and draw things from different perspectives makes drawing more fun and satisfying. As someone who ordinarily is more interested in life than buildings, I also realized the advantage of starting with boxier shapes, knowing that I can apply the same techniques to the animate world now that I have seen how they work. I highly recommend the workshop and other opportunities to work with Eric March.

At three floors with several sections each, it is one of the most impressive museums I've ever seen attached to a university. The content includes a variety of archaeological and anthropological exhibits that will be confronting for all the evolution deniers out there (to say nothing of the male and female bathrooms), but also an ample selection of minerals, animal specimens, and cultural artifacts from around the world. Notably, the museum acknowledges that some artifacts from Machu Picchu have been returned to Peru, the subject of considerable controversy. The collection remains impressive and the conversation about the provenance of these sorts of collections is ongoing, and I saw one of the biggest selections of New Guinean objects I've ever found. There were some criticisms from my end; notably the accessibility of the building was not great, and some kind of orchestra performance was going on but their automatic door openers did not work so I had to hold the door for a string bass player myself. In terms of content, a certain amount of circumspection on the history of science is appropriate, but their exhibit on eugenics made it sound like the concept of intelligence itself was a pseudoscience, which is a bizarre claim to make, particularly given the bunch of elitists that remain at Yale well after the eugenicists have (hopefully) departed. Overall, though, I think visitors of any age, be they young children, collegians, or adults of various stripes, will likely find the museum experience enlightening and enjoyable.

I was visiting the nutmeg for a wedding a few weeks back when I found myself in New Haven with some friends and some time to kill. We were going to get some food, but figured it was a good time to go and check out the museum before hand. From the second I walked inside this place, I did not expect it to be as big as it was. This place is absolutely massive and stretches across multiple floors and a bunch of different exhibits on each floor. You have large exhibits dedicated to dinosaurs, sea creatures, butterflies, and a ton of extremely old things on display. I definitely spent the most time in the dinosaur room as well as a room full of taxidermy. The taxidermy room had raccoons, bears, large cats, and most importantly, some of the cutest red pandas I've ever seen in my life. I ended up running out of time sadly, but the time I spent here was an absolute blast. Overall, the Peabody Museum of Natural History is such a cool place to spend a few hours. I had a blast checking out all the different exhibits and of course, I had to hit up the gift shop for a magnet and a Yale Peabody shirt. I can't wait to check back in again on my next visit to Connecticut.

Leitner's is nestled away behind the Divinity School at Yale. When driving on Prospect Street, you have to go up a long driveway to even see it. Out of curiosity, I decided to see what was up the hill one day, and wha-lah, I stumbled onto a whole planetarium. Neat! The planetarium is open to the public on Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons (check out the schedule here http://bit.ly/1tEK7PT) for FREE shows. The current shows focus on Black Holes. Our moderator, Angelo, walked us through all of the constellations visible from earth on a clear night, and even tied in some Greek mythology. Interesting presentation. The coolest part was the special effects that allow the audience to zoom into stars, it felt like I was whizzing through space. That was the first half of the presentation, about 30 minutes long. In the second part, they show a movie that delves into the mysteries of black holes. On clear nights, after the show, they offer free viewings of the night sky through their massive telescopes. It was a little hazy on the night I went, but I was still able to see Saturn. It was a great outing for the bargain price of... Free! This would be a great experience for families with children or for lovebirds to hold hands while gazing into the stars (gentleman, tell your lady no star is as radiant as she is and your guaranteed a smooch... You're welcome.). An out of this world experience! I'll be back.

The museum was designed by Louis Kahn, and the building is incredible. It's built around two interior courtyards and has a spiral staircase hidden inside a concrete cylinder. Its design includes travertine, white oak, and concrete. As with his other museum that I love (the Kimbell in Fort Worth), the lighting is incredible (the skylights are designed in such a way as to allow in the most possible light, but diffused to protect the art). I knew when we walked in that we didn't have long in the museum, so I asked a docent for the architectural highlights, and he was kind enough to steer us to the most special aspects and rooms of the building's design. But so you don't think the museum is just an empty building, I should mention the art!! Their permanent collection is interesting - the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the UK. When we visited, the museum also had some interesting temporary exhibits: "Tracey Emin: I Loved You Until the Morning" and "J. M. W. Turner: Romance and Reality." It's a really beautiful museum - both the architecture and the art. I'd love to return when I have more time - to really enjoy the collection and not just the architecture next time! What a museum!

The art selection itself was decent, though nothing particularly standout or extraordinary in my opinion. Of course, I understand these are original works and touching is strictly off-limits, but the security presence went FAR beyond standard supervision. Throughout our visit, a bald, Caucasian security guard (appearing to be in his late 50s) repeatedly followed my group from area to area. Our group was completely respectful. We spoke in soft voices, kept a reasonable distance, and didn't touch ANYTHING. Yet he remained fixated on us while completely ignoring other visitors in the galleries. It felt restrictive, hostile, and bordering on harassment. A museum should be an open, welcoming environment for everyone, but instead, I was made to feel deeply uncomfortable and unwelcomed. As long as this level of bias and profiling in staff behavior persists, I won't be returning.
