We have a couple of train fans in our family, so when we heard the latest exhibit at Dublin Arts…read morewas "Train Interpretations" by Frederick Ripley, we decided to stop by. By chance, we lucked out and visited while the artist himself was onsite. The staff were so friendly, greeting us as soon as we stepped inside and advised that the exhibit was set up on the first floor in a loop. The building is a former home and is quite lovely on its own, and then the council has done a great job organizing their exhibits to complement the building and make it easy to move around. We enjoyed looking at the wide variety of train photos from all around the country, and getting to chat with the artist was nice - he was great with kids too and had a little game for them to find where the photo on his business card was in the gallery. Outside, the grounds are beautiful too and the backyard goes down to the river. There's a nice parking lot available outside and admission is free. We will have to watch for future exhibits!

Be sure to see a collection before replaced by another collection. While I was there I took advantage of grabbing some of the flyers the had about their partner galleries, current artists on exhibit as well as art-related upcoming events. Free admission. The volunteers do such a good job, as it does get crowded. The prices did seem noticeably higher this year, but it looks like they are hosting an after holiday sale. The Ohio designer craftsmen also host an art studio clearance sale at the Expo Center in February.

Terra Gallery is a working gallery that hosts a variety of hands on events listed either on their site or on eventbrite. I didn't spend much time exploring the gallery because I was pretty sure I'd need all of the time for my project, but there were a lot of interesting looking pieces that I will plan to explore more in the future. The space is a little small, but they have made good use of it, and are planning a move across to Bridge Park soon. I was glad I recruited a friend to join, because we were the only two people in the class! It was a fairly laid back event. The instructor had sketched out the details on the canvases before we arrived, and they provided a little instruction card that kind of showed how to build your piece up. As usual with these events, we ended up with two very different finished products, and my friend chose not to add some of the elements to her piece. April helped her take things out as she preferred. Since it was just the two of us, we were chatting and painting and the instructor was working on her own piece while another woman priced pieces in the gallery. They were very friendly and I had a great time!

My partner was visiting from out of town and some inclement weather disrupted our original plans…read morefor the day. So happy I stumbled upon Jacob's glass etching class while searching for other things to do! We both picked out pint glasses and got to work decorating them with vinyl stickers. Once we were finished, Jacob took us to the studio and showed us how to sand blast the glasses to reveal the design. We learned a lot about glass and had a great time! We were there for a little over two hours, but it could take more or less time depending on how intricate you get with your design. Would definitely recommend this to other people interested in an artsy afternoon!

Had a great experience at Wine and Canvas a few weeks ago. The class was taught by Bryan and he…read moremade the class fun and engaging. I went to Wine and Canvas with nine other people for an event. We did a skyline and made the canvas a night background. I have painted in the past but never liked how they came out. I really appreciated Bryan going above and beyond to ensure that everyone in our group was happy with their work and gave tips on how to fix anything we might have messed up. As far as the wine part, I was expecting my group to order more drinks but they didn't. I also am a total klutz and tipped my drink over then it sprayed on the group. I was able to get another one no problem. You can also bring your own food and if I knew that before I would've brought snacks. So many opportunities at this store. Would go back anytime!

The Daily Chores sculpture is one of the must-see public art pieces in Dublin, Ohio. This city has…read morea surprisingly large number of sculptures located all around town, and trying to hit them all was one of the highlights of my visit to Dublin. (If you visit dublinarts.org, you'll find a list of the public artworks and where they're located.) This sculpture is located in the historic district, right at the corner of Bridge and High Streets. You really can't miss it -- just look for the brick area on the corner. According to Dublin's art website, this piece was inspired by the town water pump that sat in the middle of the intersection in the early 1900s, which served as a source of water and a figurative "water cooler" where the townspeople would meet and catch up. The bronze and stone statues represent that time in Dublin's history.

Daily Chores is a neat sculpture designed by Michael Tizzano and made of bronze and stone. It was…read moredesigned to commemorate the old water pump that used to exist nearby, right in the middle of the road, where people would gather to get their water and chat. The Dublin Ohio webpage has some neat historic photos of this bit of inspiration, in addition to photos of the process of creation of the existing art piece, which is very interesting for those who enjoy history or art. The pump finally had to be retired when a motorist hit it - that new fangled invention, the car, was incompatible with the placement. Hopefully, the sculpture, with a location on the sidewalk/small plaza type area will be safer from such a fate!
