Lucas sullivant sculpture located right off the banks of the Scioto mile in Columbus Ohio…read more While in town for my daughters cheer comp the family and I was checking out public art and came across this sculpture while looking at the nearby Scioto deer monuments. I was not familiar with the name but upon Google found out he was a founder of Columbus Ohio so that's a nice way to honor and tribute a pioneer of the area. Overall it's a rather large and well down piece and it is always fun to discover new public art that teaches you some History.

We don't have much, but what there is, reflects our heritage and history, including a few pieces situated throughout downtown. This particular sculpture is situated in front of COSI. At first glance it might look like a Native American, but it actually depicts Lucas Sullivant (1765-1823), the fouding father of Franklinton, which later became the city of Columbus. You'll find this statue in Genoa Park, along Washington Boulevard south of Broad Street. It shows Sulivant, a colonial surveyor, gazing out over the Scioto River opposite downtown Columbus, where he would eventually establish the capital of Ohio.

The American Issue is a sculpture located on the City Hall plaza in uptown Westerville. The…read moresculpture itself consists of several elements that make it very intriguing to look at on multiple sides: A giant wedge splits a boulder of rock. On each of the two larger sides of the wedge is printed numerous quotes and headlines, with each taking a different perspective on the "American issue" of the title: to adopt Prohibition (18th amendment) or not. There is an unraveling barrel balanced on top of the giant wedge, opposite from the boulder. The work was designed by Matthew Gray Palmer. I was, at first, a bit puzzled as to why there was a large sculpture memorializing Prohibition, but I got the opportunity for a history lesson, as a nearby plaque helped shed light on it: it declares Westerville "the Home of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution." There are other signs (literally) around town that I then began noticing (including one that names Westerville the "Dry Capital of the World"). Apparently, back in the early 1900s, Westerville became the home of multiple groups that fought for America to go dry, including the Anti-Saloon League of America, the American Issue Publishing Co., and the Temperance Education Foundation. I had no idea that Westerville played such a significant role, and I certainly hope I get a chance to use that information in a trivia night at some point! It's also interesting to see all of these historical signs on the topic, while you simultaneously walk by the modern signs indicating the boundaries of the uptown area's DORA.

This is a fun sculpture that is out in the parking lot area, across from the Municipal Services…read morebuilding itself. All of the flowers are pretty tall and appear to be made out metal pieces with faces that look like gears. Because there are several flowers facing different ways, it's a great piece to walk around and take in from all sides. I was unable to locate information on the artist.

Modern Head is a more recent addition to the Ohio State University campus, which can be found in…read morethe space between Smith and McPherson Labs. The sculpture was designed by Roy Lichtenstein, who was both an alumnus of and a course instructor at the university. He originally designed the sculpture and then oversaw the production of a series of them, the resulting pieces of which are now located around the world. Because Lichtenstein had already passed on when the university requested a piece, it was selected by his foundation. Lichtenstein's assistant, who had been involved in the original series, oversaw the production of this specific piece. The stainless steel sculpture, which is 31 feet high, is a real eye catcher and a great addition to campus!

This mosaic is located on the exterior of the Northstar Cafe in uptown Westerville. It is a…read morebeautiful rendition of Mount Fuji, in which both the mountain and its reflection are depicted. It is very calming, with its blues, grays, greens, and whites. It was also interesting to learn about the mosaic's history - it is a nod to the original owner of the space, a tea house and Shinto shrine that were there since the late 1950s/early 1960s. The mosaic was originally located inside of the tea house and was added to the exterior as part of the renovation/redevelopment into the current Northstar Cafe. It's really wonderful that it was both saved and moved to the exterior so that everyone can easily enjoy it when strolling around town. Wonderful piece!

This vibrant mural off Russell St in the Short North has been a lovely addition to the art…read moredistrict. It's on the side of a parking garage, but you would never know it if it weren't for the gates and the kiosk for paying. The colors are unique and separately you might not be able to see how they fit together, but they do! It's a great photo worthy mural, for individuals or even groups since it's so long. I love that it has a little tile on the side that explains the piece and states the artist that made it - Dion Johnson. From the artist.. "This mural reflects the vibrancy and joy of the Short North Arts District. Drawing from the lively activity of High Street and the changing seasons visible in Goodale Park, Intersecting Energy translates time, movement and emotion into layers of colors that progress across the wall."

My family and I who weee in town for my daughters cheer competition at the nearby convention center was Walling the area checking out public art when their colorful and almost 3d looking mural really stuck out to us. Overall a very pretty and relaxing mural that is fun to check out in what is a really cool area for public art discovering.

It is currently located at the corner of Ackerman Road and Olentangy River Road in the athletic field area. It's a very neat sculpture that really catches your eye along the street. There is a sidewalk available in front of it to get a closer look.
