Working in Newark everyday allows me to enjoy lunch at Hobby's a few times a month…read more The restaurant itself is very dated and old school. Lots of Devils memorabilia is hung up throughout. Basic seating with nothing fancy. A full jar of fresh pickles is on the table. The pastrami is second to none. Seriously. You get a generous portion of pastrami on rye. Greasy, fatty, just perfect! The onion rings are the best. They are famous for a reason. I go a few times a month so, I'm always greeted by name and promptly seated. The food always arrives shortly after the order is taken.

Luckily I found Hobby's Delicatessen via Find Me Gluten Free and was so glad to find that they do legitimate gluten-free options with a dedicated fryer and prep space to prevent cross contamination. I had the gluten-free pastrami wrap with fries for $23.95 and my husband had the #5 pastrami and corned beef with coleslaw and Russian dressing for $25.95. he also got the drip coffee with free refills for $3.25. Service was amazing. Owner's came out and chatted with us and preemptively made sure that I was aware that my food was safe for me to consume. Our waitress was incredibly personable and sweet. There were free pickles on the table. I'm not even a pickle person but I had three because again, I've been dying for vegetables after being in Europe. Great portions, safe celiac options, personable service, refillable drinks and no charge to use the toilets (although I didn't need to use them during this visit) This is what makes American restaurants great and Hobby's ticks all of those boxes. Just a heads-up for first-timers: you are handed a ticket as soon as you enter. Do not lose that ticket, or you will have to pay a hefty fine to the store. There are multiple lines you can join to order, and our wait in line was only about 10-15 minutes. Despite the chaos, there were plenty of chairs available to sit down and eat. The service was an unexpected highlight. We tipped our cutter when we ordered, and he was amazing, he gave us four pieces of fresh meat to try right there on the spot while he was preparing our food. The food absolutely lived up to the hype. We ordered the famous Reuben sandwich, and it was DELICIOUS. We also got the corned beef sandwich, which was fantastic (though the Reuben still won our hearts). To round out the meal, we grabbed a couple of their sodas and a hot dog. Everything was excellent!

If I could give Katz's 4.5 stars, I would. The food absolutely deserves 5 stars. The only reason…read moreI'm giving it 4 is because, as a first-time visitor, the ordering process was confusing. I wasn't sure where to order my drinks and sides, and a little more signage would go a long way. The pastrami sandwich absolutely lived up to the hype. I was visiting from Sacramento, and I'd gladly come back just for another sandwich. The long lines make complete sense. A tip for first-timers: try to avoid 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. if you can. I went around 10 p.m., and it was still busy. There are 10 carving lines to choose from, and drinks and sides (fries, coleslaw, and latkes) are ordered at the counter in the back. Also, don't lose your orange ticket--you'll need it to pay before you leave. I recommend ordering the pastrami sandwich with everything and adding onions for a little extra crunch. Pair it with a side of fries, and you're set. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in New York, and I'll be bringing my family. Katz's is a must-visit.

The woman with the gray hair working at the register, I'm not sure if she is the owner or manager has come across as rude toward me on multiple occasions and has given me uncomfortable looks while I'm paying. I've also personally noticed what felt like different treatment toward some Jespy clients compared to other customers coming in, which made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome at times she treats the Jespy clients differently. The setup for ordering subs can also be a little confusing, especially if it's your first time there or if the deli is busy. The line and ordering process could definitely be organized a bit better. The service overall could be friendlier and more welcoming. It's also a little pricey, so I don't go there very often. That being said, the food itself is still very good and worth trying if you're in the area.
