So I sent a message just to make sure that this included the day we planned to go and they told me to check back with them the next day to see if we'd be able to go or not! I asked if I could message them at 7 am and they said yes and that they would be "watching for my message!" So I sent a message a little before 7 asking how the river was that morning with no reply! So I sent another message about 45 minutes later that said it was ok if we couldn't go, but that we had a 2 hour drive so I wanted to make sure either way...again no response! They didn't respond the entire day! Communication is so Important for a business and while I completely understand that the river level is out of their control, a quick message back saying they'd have to stay closed is all I asked for!

I called and a nice person named Annette answered and said that yes they were open. I found the place with help from signs leading to the place. I was met and checked in with Annette. Found out that I would have a tent area to myself as it was during the week. I bought some firewood and Annette's husband John delivered it to my site, which was on the river. Very peaceful. They had the usual amenities I.E full hookups plus volleyball, horseshoe pits, showers, hiking and horse trails and a nice beach. John and Annette have a real nice place there. Go check it out.

We had a great experience with them. No mishaps. They were really chill and helpful, and made the renting process a breeze. And yes, their website is full of snarky WI sarcasm, but it makes the experience all the more homey. Their FAQs are straight to the point. They truly answer every question you might have on there, and there's no doubt if you have another question they'd give their frank and honest advice. We did the Mazo to Spring Green trip, and its foolproof fun! It's an 18 mile straight shot down a lazy river. The paddling is pretty intense if you're not used to it, and personally, we got rained on, fogged out, and sand in every crevice, BUT even then it was still fun. We rented like 5 days out before 4th of July weekend, and I think we still got a good rate (on their website it says they raise prices, once their rentals run low to deal with demand). 150ish dollars for a 2 day canoe/paddle rental, and a 20ish minute shuttle was a pretty decent deal. TLDR: WCC makes fun easy! They'll handle the canoe part, you handle the fun.

The good part is, the only thing that gets wet is your feet! We had rented a tube with a bottom. It was a lovely day outside after being stuck at home for so long. The staff was friendly and prompt with service. The moment you got to the end of the float, employees were there to assist getting your equipment out of the water and were ready to give you a ride to your car. MRC was responsibly following social distancing and everything felt clean. We had a great time! I'm ready to go back!!

Day of, the owner doesn't flinch at my mistake. He quickly corrected where I dropped the ball and it didn't seem to interrupt his operation. The Sugar river is a blast. Smaller and more technical than the nearby Wisconsin River. PLUS! There's some killer breweries, tacos, cocktail bars, & a live music venue to welcome you back once you're off the river. 100% would recommend and will most certainly use Sugar River Outfitters again.

When we walked into their beautiful cabin / office the potbelly stove was kicking out a little heat on that chilly morning and the panoramic view of the river through the wall-o-windows was fantastic. The woman who helped us was so friendly and gave us a thorough briefing to prepare us, including helpful details about what to expect from the river. The black-and-white map they provide is a little tough to read. Color would be better. I do like an aluminum canoe best (which is what BRR runs.) The PFDs they provide by default are the orange rectangle type II, but when I asked if they had a vest-type they accommodated. The basic orange are fine if you're leaving them in the boat, but really get in the way if you wear them while paddling. Because s#!t can go wrong fast on a river like the Wisconsin I prefer to wear the PFD most of the time. Our pickup was prompt and the van was clean and in nice shape. I've done many different stretches of the Wisconsin now and I do think the segment between BRR and Arena is the nicest I've done. It's more distant from roads, so without that truck noise it feels more remote. The shore and bluffs are pretty on this stretch too. It's a small and personal operation which is great when it's quiet. I could see them struggling to attend to everyone on busy weekend days, though. Our canoe had clearly see lots of trips - it showed evidence of many repairs and made me question its reliability a little bit. That said, it did not appear to leak at all, so... I do like like renting from a down-river outfitter so there's no need to get back for a specific shuttle time, so BRR has that going against it, but all-in-all this place will likely be my go-to for future trips.
