Story time. I emailed late in the week (Thu/Fri) before taking a Sun-Tue trip to Galena, inquiring about appointment availability either late Monday or early Tuesday, since I'd be hitting the slopes (literally, with my body) most of Monday. I got a quick response of Tuesday availability and a note to call to reserve the spot. Which of course I never did. I was staying at the hotel next door and walked over Tuesday morning, just to try my luck. I was told that there should be in roughly 30 min, but that sessions were ongoing and they could call me once the masseuses were finished. That's exactly what happened, and I was able to fly by the seat of my pants book a couples deep tissue massage. I can't say I've treated myself to many massages, but this - my WORD - was unlike any I've ever had. I felt like an action figure getting quality control stress-tested before getting sent out to market. Bent, rolled, turned, pressed, with special attention payed to nagging little knots. My butt has never known such treatment, and I mean that in the best possible way. Later that evening, when I took my daily run, it was like butter. To top everything off, as if the little cups of champagne and chocolate didn't do enough, we were also advised on daily stretches that we could do to relieve tension caused by sitting at a computer all day. Today we had the couples Swedish massage package with Susan and Jamie as our masseurs. The ladies were very pleasant and skilled at their jobs. They found knots I think I was in denial of and they talked us through the entire massage checking in for pressure and points of tension. I'm really sad that I can't come back to see them again soon because this was so long over do and they were both personable and professional. God help us all, we need this kind of service around the world. Jamie and Susan were sensitive to our needs and offered moments of laughter which encouraged our relaxation. I called the day before to make an appointment for my Mom and I to celebrate her birthday. The woman at the desk told me they would need to stack the mani/pedi appointments. That was fine, we weren't in a rush. She said could get us in towards the end of the day. (I mention this because I think they were short staffed. The woman who did my Moms nails had just done facials for a bridal party.) That spa itself is beautiful, and the staff was friendly and personable. I hate leaving a three star review, but we had our mani/pedis on Friday, and it's Tuesday. My Moms nails look like they've already had outgrowth because they weren't painted on the sides, and all the way down the natural nail line. It's dark in the salon, so it may have been hard for the nail technician to see, but when my Mom and I were outside in natural light, there was noticeable paint on her skin on the tips of a few of her fingers. The clear coat didn't cover her nails, and was applied too thin. Her nails have already chipped in several spots. My Mom had to have them re-done today at her local salon. Her nails should not look this worn after 4 days. (Note: My Mom did not have the nail technician cut her cuticles or push them down. That was my Moms choice. This review is for polish only) For $40 + $15 French Manicure upgrade, she expected better. Disappointing. I have to say this was the best one we've ever received. Gerald and Gabby were our masseuses and they made it very relaxing and did a phenomenal job. A few weeks after posting my review, I got a phone call from the manager if the spa, apologizing for my experience and explaining that the girl who had done my pedicure was no longer working there as this was not the only problem concerning her. The manger was very friendly and apologetic, and a few days later I got a gift certificate in the mail for the spa. Unfortunately, I was there on a vacation and don't know when I'll be back to utilize it, but it was a nice gesture. If I was back in the area, I would be happy to give them another shot, as the visit I had may not reflect the type of experience that is typical there! Galena Day Spa is worth every penny. Wonderful staff, incredibly professional and helpful. Ambient atmosphere is the first thing you notice when you walk in. We managed to get appointments for 2 people at the same time on the same day, a day before we wanted to get in even with a wedding going on at the banquet area in the boutique/cottage. Had the hot stone massage with vanilla almond exfoliant and it lasted around an hour. Very affordable combo package. We'll be back every year on our annual trip to Galena. read more

I recently had a prenatal massage here, and it was one of the worst I've ever had. I arrived right at my scheduled time (1:00) but they didn't call me into the room until 1:10. When I got in the room, I quickly undressed and got on table, yet nearly another ten minutes went by before the massage started (she had to readjust the pregnancy pillow twice). I'm notating the time here, bc I paid for a 60 min massage. She essentially rubbed my skin the whole time, and hardly touched my back (the only place I told her I was sore!). She did not use her fingers to "get in the groove" of my aching muscles. Instead, I felt like she just applied lotion on my skin the whole time. Towards the end of the massage, she had me change positions again. I moved quickly, but felt like the whole transition took another five minutes for her to start working again. I was thinking in my head the whole time that she was stalling so much (but I also understand that she didn't want to rush a pregnant mama). Anyway, when it was all said and done, I took my time to get dressed, drank a glass of water they provided, paid, tipped, and walked to my car. When I got in the car, the clock said 2:03, which means my massage was WAY shorter than the 60 min I paid for. All in all, was the massage relaxing? Yes. Did it soothe my sore muscles? No. Was it a good value for the money? Definitely not. Would I ever go back or recommend the place? No. read more

Had pedi and Manu cure. They were just ok, nothing special especially for the price. They manually fill copper looking bowls with water and you rest your feet on top of the bowl when they paint the toenails. The bowl tips and its hard to relax because it feels unstable. My shellac manicure was ok but poor attention to cuticles and I had to ask her to paint the very sides of my nails as it was missed. It looks like I already have outgrowth of my nails because she didn't paint all of the way down to the end.. Didn't see that until I left because it was dark in the room. It was also super hard to pick the colors because the lighting is so poor in that area. I had to pull a color out and then walk over to a lamp because it was so dark. Conveniently located in out hotel at the Irish Cottage that I loved but try going elsewhere for a Mani/Pedi. read more

I booked a prenatal massage here and a 60 minute deep tissue massage. My massage - 1) the prenatal pillow was horrible, they need to get the ones where you hug them 2) I told her LOWER BACK PLEASE, and I feel like all I got was a massage on my arms and legs the whole time. Was it relaxing yes, but it's not what I paid for, I could have had my husband do the same thing and better. Husband Massage - 1) deep tissue means not his arms and legs as well. I would not recommend this place. I think I could have got a better hand and foot massage at a nail salon and got my nails and toes painted. read more

We arranged spa services for 3 of the three days we stayed at the Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel. The decor was modern...warmth was provided by its earth tones, candlelight, soothing scents, and music. Privacy was planned, so nobody was in the locker rooms while changing. The Swedish massage was therapeutic after a ride 2 1/2 hours and provided a good respite and kickoff to the, "spa-cation." Next day was a wax for each of us which was provided on a warm bed with the waxing done professionally without causing undue pain or after effects. We wanted more! The last of the spa treatments was a hot stone massage which was surprising because it's so hot! Not too hot, though. Again, we were treated to a private couples' candlelit lounge with champagne and chocolates. We'd recommend this to (and did) our friends. read more

We went on a girls getaway weekend and wanted massages and decided on Galena Day Spa. We all have had massages before but it was all of our first time to an actual spa so we were unsure of what to expect. But everyone from the lady that greeted us when we walked in to our therapists to the other employees that we passed in the hall was so warm and welcoming. The spa was very inviting and relaxing. I had Angel for a 1 hour massage and honestly for just a Swedish, it probably was one of the best massage I've ever had. And I used to get massages monthly. They use essential oils during the massage and also warm towels on your feet and back. It felt amazing. If you don't like getting your hair oily make sure to tell them beforehand. They are very accommodating. They also have showers stocked with shampoo and body wash, however we didn't use them. I would highly recommend anyone wanting a massage while they visit Galena to try them out. We are all ready to go back again! read more

We had a girls weekend in Galena of the 4th of July holiday and decided on going to the spa at the hotel since it is conveniently located there. Being a small town and what not, we had concerns on how this spa would be. However, we were completely surprised in a good way! It is located in the basement of the hotel and the décor was typical spa - candlelight, nice soft spa music, mood lighting, ect. It had a very spa feeling right when you walked in. There was 3 of us and we each got a 60 minute massage. I had her focus on everywhere so I got a full body massage, but one of my friends had a sore back so she had her therapist only work on that area, which she had no problem doing. The massage was great and I was completely relaxed. My room was quiet and they even had the warmed massage tables, which was fantastic and cozy. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend this place if you are getting a massage in Galena. read more

Made an appointment for a Swedish massage here first thing in the morning on my second day staying at the hotel. I see some others didn't have the best experience, but mine was pretty much great. Everyone was friendly to talk to. My massage, although a bit more expensive than I typically pay, was worth it. I had Jamie, and she gave a very relaxing massage. She worked extra on my shoulders because they are terrible, and she really got in there and made the, feel better. She talked more than I prefer, but I actually didn't ,one because it was good conversation. She also checked multiple times to make sure I was doing ok, because she used a lot more pressure on my shoulders than you would typically get during a Swedish massage. read more
