I've waited a year to post my review. While I believe that many patients are helped by Dr. Moawad, my experience has not been stellar. What I do appreciate is that Dr. Moawad was able to give me a diagnosis and put some pieces together for me that multiple providers had not done after 3 years of chronic pelvic pain and horrible periods that still negatively impact my quality of life. My first visit was great, I felt cared for and seen. I do believe that Dr. Moawad cares and has developed his skills and knowledge to help as many women as possible. My endo was advanced when it was caught, which may be why I'm still having significant impacts from it a year after surgery. I knew that one surgery would not fix all of the things, but I did expect that my quality of life would improve. That has not been the case thus far. The surgery coordinator said to me, when she was trying to get me to commit to the payment, that my life would change. So far the only real change is that I have increased my debt in order to pay for the surgery. Three things that I wish had been different in my experience: 1. More thorough education about endo and adenomyosis, which I also have. I was given the option to have laparoscopic surgery to include a hysterectomy or not. I chose to keep my uterus, as I was not emotionally ready to have that procedure. If there had been clearer information about the adenomyosis part, I may have made a different decision. My periods have gotten worse after surgery, and I am incapacitated for 2-3 days each month. I also still have the chronic pelvic pain (from pudendal neuralgia) which has only moderately improved after surgery. 2. Customer service. When the initial consult fee is close to $1000 and the surgery is out of network (costing thousands of dollars) I expect a very high level of customer service. This was not my experience. I felt like a paycheck to the admin staff and surgery coordinator. Multiple times I emailed into the office with questions and after 3 days or so, would ping them again. In my experience of over 20 years in the professional world, the general expectation is a 24 hour time window for answers and communication. I realize that the answer to a question may take longer depending on the doctor's schedule or billing service, but I do expect a response to acknowledge my request and give an ETA on an answer. I would suggest that the office staff need some training on customer service at a high level. 3. After care. I experienced new and different pain after my surgery and reached out to Dr. Moawad's office for support. I was referred to a pain specialist whom I met with twice and he did not have helpful recommendations. On my own, I found a practice that does pelvic rehabilitation medicine and have engaged with them. They informed me that they have a relationship with Dr. Moawad and I wish that he had referred me to them when I had continued pelvic pain after surgery and to this day. Endometriosis is a horrible disease that affects millions of women. I'm glad there is expertise, I just wish I felt better a year after surgery. read more

I am four months post excision surgery with Dr Moawad and I could not be happier with my decision to go ahead with the surgery. Since my first appointment with Dr Moawad, I felt heard and validated. Not only is he very skilled but also very caring and compassionate. He asked a lot of questions, did a pelvic exam and predicted I had Endometriosis. He then requested an MRI (which confirmed the endo), and we scheduled the surgery. The surgery went really well and my recovery was not bad at all. It felt great knowing that he removed all my endometriosis and my symptoms are significantly better since then. Thank you Dr Moawad and the CEAPS team for such a seamless experience. Sometimes is life we have to make very important decisions when it comes to what is best for our health. I recently had a hestorextomy because my uterus was 2 pounds, where a woman's uterus is around 4 ounces. Not sure of the outcome and what to expect after the procedure; my thoughts were everywhere. Dr. Moawad explained everything in detail, told me to relax and that I was in good hands. Well I must say that I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Dr. Gaby Moawad was a life saver. I have stage 4 Endometriosis and already had a laparoscopy in 2016 but was still struggling with the symptoms. I was on BC and then stopped to try to get pregnant. I tried for 6 months and did not get pregnant. I was in terrible pain. For example, I would wake up in the middle of the night to take an 800 mg ibuprofen because of the amount of pain I was in. Dr, Gaby Moawad is an amazing doctor. After getting two opinions in regards to my fibroid issue and periods lasting 15-18 days and spotting in between, the other two doctors gave me the run around. One of them offered uterine emobilization, but the size and location of my fibroids that option wouldn't have improved my situation. When I met Dr. Moawad for my consultation, I literally asked him a million questions because a partial hysterectomy was my last option and I didn't want one. He explained in detail all of the myths and truths that I heard. I am 42 and have three children with no intentions on having any more children. He told me jokingly that uterus' are only good for holding babies and cancer. If I wanted more children, there were other options but I didn't. Within 6 weeks of meeting Dr. Moawad I had a partial hysterectomy removing my uterus and cervix but keeping my ovaries so I will not go into early menopause. The morning of the surgery if went through everything that he was going to do and what to expect. The recovery wasn't like anything I read online. It was an in out procedure. The surgery was on a Thursday. The day of surgery, I was sore and I advocated assistance getting out of bed, but I was able to get out on my own when I needed too. By Saturday day two I was moving around the house and went downstairs twice. That Tuesday I drove to BJ's and drove the wheelchair while my children put the items in the shopping cart. I've been fine with no pain 2 1/2 weeks later. I took the narcotic pain killer the first two days and missed a dose the third day and didn't need it because there was no pain. His peers, residents and patients respect Dr. Moawad. If they need a gynecological procedure, they also request him. If you have any gynecological needs, Dr. Moawad is the doctor I would use. He is very experienced with robotic surgery which makes this procedure less invasive. He also is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Moawad is a fantastic OB/GYN and surgeon. For a few years he was my OB and I always felt extremely comfortable. He answered my questions, gave his professional opinion and allowed time for me to make the best decision for my body. Recently, I returned to see him because my fibroids had grown back. He explained all my options, and once again, told me to take my time and decide what was best for me and my family. I decided to have a full laparoscopic hysterectomy (keeping my ovaries)-the surgery was a success and I'm three weeks post-op. I waited in the exam room alone for about half an hour before a nurse came in. I didn't see Dr. Moawad until a full hour after my appointment time. He was very rushed. He was agitated and I could tell he just wanted to see the next patient and spent very little time with me. He was annoyed and curt about answering any questions I had and when I asked for a pelvic exam, he was very reluctant then aggressive. I left feeling stunned and violated. I told him that I was there for a second opinion due to recently been told that I would need invasive surgery and be out of work for 4-6 weeks due to uterine fibroids. He is so thorough, honest, knowledgeable, and funny (sarcastic and very real), which put me at ease. He answered all of my questions (and I had a ton of them) and he explained things very clearly. He had me get an MRI prior to surgery (which neither of the other doctors had requested) which was reassuring that he wanted to see the full picture. Background: Had Multiple Fibroids and persistent heavy bleeding for nearly a year. Was with another ob-gyn and she recommended a total abdominal hysterectomy as soon as she saw me. Do you need reassurance? Do you need your pain explained and healed? Dr. Moawad is just the person! I cannot begin to thank him for my new life. My endometriosis came back and after an ablation surgery in May, it only got worse. Dr. Moawad was able to diagnose a much more severe form of endometriosis within minutes of the exam and scheduled a surgery right away. If I hadn't, I might have lost a kidney and wouldn't have known. I cannot imagine the complications that could've come from this. I went to GW Medical Faculty Associates as an international patient, with not much time on my hand. I had few weeks to go for consultations, decide on a procedure and have the procedure done. The first Gynecologist I saw couldn't fit me into her schedule so she referred me to Dr. Moawad who was able to fit me into his schedule. I had to do a second surgery, a major one. All of the consultations, tests and paperwork needed to be completed before a major surgery was completed on time and I am glad Dr. Moawad once again agreed to work with me. As you can imagine, I was pretty much frightened, but Dr. Moawad was wonderful about explaining to me and my family what he was going to do, and what the likely outcomes and complications were including recovery time. He took time to inform us the dos and the donts before and after surgery. He also took time to answer my questions and explained things to me in a way that I understood and that truly put me at ease. I stayed in the hospital 24 hours after my surgery and he visited me whilst at the hospital to see how I was doing. I was so impressed when in the first few days at home, my phone rang and when I answered, it was Dr. Moawad at the other end checking on me to see how I was doing. I was not only excited to hear his voice but it told me a lot about Dr Moawad's character and care for all his patients one at a time. Dr. Moawad performed a partial hysterectomy (minimally invasive) to relieve my chronic pelvic and back pain. The recovery was easy; the discomfort, mild and quickly gone. The incision is an almost invisible tiny line near the navel. It feels like a heavy knot that had always been there in my pelvis has disappeared, and I'm very grateful for his kindness and professionalism. But Dr. Moawad did more than that for me. A longer explanation follows for the benefit of women with "undiagnosable" problems who have given up on gynecologists. ----- At first it was pain in my legs. Then at some point I couldn't stand up for any period of time. Later sitting in a chair became painful. Towards the end, even lying down wasn't what it used to be. The burning pain spread from the middle of my back and from my navel down to my toes. What used to be one day of pain spread to two weeks of ovulation and eventually to most of the month. The process took about 20 years. Why? My sin was being unable to tolerate hormonal contraception. The medical complications I consistently experienced from using contraception were very real and potentially serious, but no gynecologist would believe it. Any sensible person would just use the pill, the miracle cure. I was well into my 30s before someone offered me pain medication because my problems just weren't real. At some point I became convinced that doctors didn't think I was human. Some were startlingly indifferent. There was the primary care physician who saw me get my period suddenly during an exam. As often happened, I was sobbing from the pain. The spectacle was too much for her, and she said she could no longer treat me. It wasn't much better with people I knew, who said every woman has pain. If only doctors could have seen what my colleagues saw. Everyone knew that cramps sent me off to a storeroom to lie on the floor. Once my boss found me under my desk: the pain had come on so suddenly that the nausea had paralyzed me right there. These kind people never said a word about all the work I missed. Finally, my primary care physician referred me for a surgical consult with Dr. Moawad. This came after another ER visit following my cramp-triggered collapse on the waiting room floor. Somehow, my PCP was able to see something no one else had: something was really wrong with me. But I didn't believe a GYN was capable of seeing it. When Dr. Moawad listened to me and agreed to perform surgery it was a moment I will never forget. A gynecologist heard me. Finding an end to my pain is important, but Dr. Moawad gave me another gift: he put a name to my hurricane. Endometriosis--the condition that I was told several times couldn't possibly be the explanation. For years, I knew something big was happening to me but lacked the language to express it. Thankfully, that solitary hell is over. Finally, Dr. Moawad restored a little of my faith in doctors. He treated me like a human being. Without decency like that, all the best medical advances are irrelevant. For any women with undiagnosable "problem periods" reading, don't give up hope--no matter how much you are ridiculed or how many doors are slammed in your face. I totally recommend Dr. Gaby Moawad !!! I was referred to him because of uterine fibroids, and it was the best decision ever. His staff was courteous, the wait time was short. His bedside manner was excellent. He calmed my nerves, reviewed and showed me my MRI results, answered all of my questions (and I had alot !!) He explained ALL of my options thoroughly. During surgery to remove my fibroids he used the latest technology the DaVinnci Laser Robot and after 2 small incisions on each side and the smallest incision through my belly button it was over in about 2 hours and I went home the same day. My recovery was awesome, after a couple of days the soreness was subsiding and I was back to work in about 2 weeks verses being out for 6 weeks; if I had gotten a cesarean cut. He recently performed a laparoscopic operation on me, removing damaged internal tissue (Fallopian tubes, ovarian cyst, scar tissue, etc.) in what was a very complex operation that took several hours. It was a scary procedure and I was thankful to have Dr. Moawad and his team to take care of me. He is open and honest with you about the risks, and sometimes blunt with his assessments, but I really appreciated his honesty and clarity in explaining all of my options. In 2016 I had a full hysterectomy, minus one ovary. After, I continued to suffer from pelvic pain. Almost immediately after the hysterectomy a mass formed in my pelvis. I had been told it was a resolving hematoma. After 1 year and 4 months, radiologists were still calling the mass a resolving hematoma. I had been told by my previous doctors that I would have to live with the pain. After a month of terrible pain, I sought out a new doctor and radiologist. I blindly went to see a random gynecologist (Dr. Hawa) after an ultrasound and MRI contradicted what I had been previously told. Dr. Hawa in Ashburn informed me that I had an endometrioma and referred me to super specialist Dr. Moawad. Dr. Hawa contracted Dr. Moawad on Monday and I was called the next day. I had an appointment the following day. Th care provided by Dr. Moawad has been compassionate and excellent. Dr. Moawad recently performed my robotic surgery to remove the endometrioma and endometriosis. He believes he was able to excise all the endometriosis. Thank you Dr. Moawad! I recently had a minimally invasive hysterectomy. Of course I would have preferred to avoid surgery completely, but it was necessary in my case, and I have no doubt that I made the right choice to go to Dr. Moawad. I originally saw a general gynecology surgeon who said that he would try to do a laparoscopic procedure, but that there was a decent chance that I would need to have a full open abdominal procedure. As a weightlifter it was very important to me to avoid an open procedure and the incision that goes with it. I went to Dr Moawad for a second opinion and he was confident that he could do a minimally invasive surgery, gave me a very thorough explanation of my options for the specifics of the procedure, and a clear outline of how my recovery and return to office work and weight training would proceed. Prior to surgery he also provided specific instructions for food and liquid intake and other steps that would minimize my discomfort after the procedure. I really appreciated this as I had a prior surgery where this was not provided and I was miserable, whereas this time I was pleasantly surprised by how little pain and discomfort I felt. I arrived at the hospital on the day of surgery and was treated with much care and kindness by everyone. The made sure I was comfortable and understood everything that was going on. When I woke up after I immediately got warm blankets and some pain medication from the nurse and she helped me through waking up, getting dressed, etc. and stayed with me all the way up to getting in the car with my ride home. The GW facility is excellent. Dr. Moawad checked in on me after surgery and he and the nurses made sure I knew what I could do to best recover. Now a few weeks later I'm back to my regular work schedule, the small incisions are healing up and look like nothing more than paper cuts and I have no doubt they won't even be visible in a few months. I'm also getting back into my workout routine slowly and safely. My friends and co-workers are amazed at the progress of my recovery, as am I. As with any surgery there is a little pain, uncertainty and anxiety, but I am so glad that Dr. Moawad and his whole team were there to help me through it, and doing everything they could to minimize it. Bottom line-- Dr. Moawad is a very knowledgeable doctor and skillful surgeon. He's very experienced in gynecologic surgery and the latest assistive technologies, and is extremely well-regarded by all of his colleagues at GW. He brought me through my recent procedure with flying colors. The prep was easier than for a colonoscopy, and considering the scope of the surgery, the pain has been truly minimal and my recovery is going very quickly. Background-- A couple of years ago I decided to ask my doctor at GWUMFA if anything could be done for my prolapse issues, which were becoming more pronounced and uncomfortable. She referred me to Dr. Moawad, also at the MFA, who predicted a sacral colpopexy would probably be needed. After experimenting with a (non-surgical) pessary, and getting a second opinion, I concluded that I would have the surgery when I had the time to recover from it. I scheduled the surgery for early January of this year. For those thinking about having this, it is a fairly big surgery, but can be accomplished laparoscopically by someone who knows what he/she is doing. What follows is my layman's understanding of the procedure; other resources can tell you more. A number of smallish incisions are made in the abdomen for the instruments, with a bigger one in the belly button, through which the uterus and fallopian tubes are removed (hysterectomy and double salpingectomy). The cervix is tacked up to the pelvic area (colpopexy). In my case (and this is very common with this procedure), two additional incisions are made through the pubic area in order to insert a mesh underneath the urethra (trans-vaginal taping), which otherwise would flop around and cause urinary incontinence. These interventions stimulate the body to produce scar tissue that makes the connections quite strong over time. The surgery takes about 3 hours and requires general anesthesia. The post-operative pain can be managed very well. The most acute pain came from the TVT incisions, but those also were the fastest to heal. Most healing occurs in the first six weeks, but the long-term strengthening takes more time. Dr. Moawad does this surgery at the GWU Hospital. Typically it requires one night's stay in the hospital; this was my experience. I went home the next evening with a bunch of pills, but found that I really didn't need the narcotics after the first day. In addition to the extra-strength ibuprofen and acetaminophen, Dr. Moawad recommended various OTC drugs to nip any intestinal issues in the bud. Thanks to this pharmacopeia, the minimally-invasive strategy, and Dr. Moawad's skillful execution, I have been surprisingly comfortable. Less than two weeks after the surgery, my abdomen looks almost human again, the incisions are healing extremely well and quickly, and I can do pretty much what I need to do, if a little slowly and cautiously, and in small doses. Dr. Gaby Moawad is an incredible surgeon. My fertility doctor referred him to me after the results from my MRI confirmed I had uterine fibroids. I suffered a miscarriage in September 2016. My fertility doctor wasn't sure if the fibroids contributed to it, but felt they could cause problems in future pregnancies, since there were at least 10 fibroids (the largest being the size of a grapefruit) in my uterus. My fertility doctor told me Dr. Moawad was one of the best surgeons that specialized in removing fibroids, and that I should consult with him regarding a myomectomy. That was one of the best decisions I made. Before meeting with Dr. Moawad, I researched the different myomectomy surgeries and the recovery time for each. I was certain that I would need an abdominal myomectomy that would require a long incision because of the size and number of my fibroids. Boy was I wrong. When I met with Dr. Moawad, I automatically felt at ease. He went over my MRI results and confirmed everything that my fertility doctor had told me. He answered my long list of questions and explained the surgery and recovery to me. I was impressed to learn that he specialized in performing laprascopic myomectomies (which is a hard surgery for most doctors to perform, but is minimally invasive with a shorter recovery time) and taught other doctors how to perform this particular surgery as well. Dr. Moawad informed me that I would need a laparoscopic myomectomy, which would only require 4 small keyhole incisions (the largest one being in my belly button). He told me we could do the surgery as soon as I wanted to so I scheduled it 3 weeks after my consultation. The surgery went well. Dr. Moawad removed the 10 fibroids and repaired my umbilical hernia on 11/9/17. It's been almost 3 weeks since my surgery and I'm healing well, walking around, and doing light exercises. I met with him today for my post-op appointment, and he confirmed that my incisions looked good, that I was healing well, and most importantly to wait six months before trying to conceive. I was extremely thankful for all of the information he gave me before the surgery, because of it I was prepared for what was ahead and recovered quite well. I must admit, my post-op appointment was bittersweet. I'm happy because the surgery is behind me, but sad because there is no need for me to see Dr. Moawad again.
