I'm reviewing Gabriel J Young, MD in Cupertino.
Date of Visit:
June 2009 ~ Jan 2011 (Visited Every Three months)
----
I've actually never thought that I would be writing a 1-star review for a clinic/doctor's office. Despite the high cost for medical in this country, I do appreciate and respect the medical profession, and people who work in the field.
However, I would if I could, give Dr. Young's office a zero-star. But a one-star is fair; consider the staffs (who are relatives of Dr. Young) are friendly, nice and caring.
Some background of the review, Dr. Young was actually my mom's doctor for the period of time. And the reason she went to Dr. Young, and continued to go there for more than a year was because, her insurance policy rate had skyrocketed and it was no longer affordable.
But she still needs to go see a doctor, to get the prescription of her long term medication. During that period of time, we were in a process of getting public medical insurance option. I'm glad that as January this year, our long term relationship/suffering with Dr. Young can finally come to an end.

Doctor: 0/5
----
I don't even know how to start. Some of the previous Yelp review mentioned Dr. Young is a very Christian man, and also mentioned something about the Swine Flu shot. I guess I will start from there.
Religious:
During our first visit at Dr. Young's office, when we saw Dr. Young, instead of being asked what bring us in, Dr. Young asked my mom WHETHER SHE IS BEING GRATEFUL TO GOD THAT SHE GETS TO COME TO THE OFFICE TO SEE A DOCTOR! Wow! Speechless, I respect your religious doctor, but please respect my 1st amendment right too!
Swine Flu Shot:
During the time of the swine flu epidemic in 2009, Dr. Young was being very pushy on giving us the swine flu shot. At the end, my mom gave in and took the shot for $20. Then Dr. Young turned to me and suggested I take the shot too, I refused and he even say he will give me the shot for free. (Hmm... then why did you charge my mom, who is your patient $20? ) I refused again. Then guess what? Dr. Young began telling me a story of one of his relative in New York who was perfectly healthy, but got the flu and died after two weeks. First of all, I felt really sorry for what happened, but at the same time I hope he was being honest and sincere about what he told me. But then, I felt really irritated that a doctor actually used a death threat to convince people to get vaccinated. I considered that a questionable conduct.
Pertussis Shot:
I don't exactly remember when, sometimes in 2010 for sure. Dr. Young was pushing the Pertussis shot this time. This time my mom refused all the way. Dr. Young asked the reason why my mom wouldn't take the shot; my mom answered that she afraid of needle. Then guess what? Dr. Young asked whether she afraid of needle more or afraid of death more? (Same old death threat trick!) My mom then answered that at her age, she is not afraid of death anymore. (Way to go!) Fortunately, this time I was waiting outside at the car while my other family member took my mom in.
Misc.
Most of the time, I just don't see Dr. Young really care about his patients much (My mom or others). He seems to come to the office late often (Like 10:30 or 11), every time I see him either scolding his patients or his staff at the front counter. And I had never seen him smile.

Nurses/Staffs: 4/5
----
I believe the staffs work at the front desk are actually Dr. Young's wife and sister. Unlike Dr. Young, both of them are very nice, friendly and caring. However, there is this one time, they mis-measure my mom's blood pressure as high instead of in fact it's normal, because they measure it with my mom's sleeves on.

Facility: 1/5
----
Probably the most dirty and messy clinic I had ever been to. Near the waiting area where the sofa is, old paper, magazines were everywhere. Behind the front desk, you can see documents, patient's file are scatter everywhere. At this one time, they had left one of the patient's confidential info (DOB, SS#, Address...etc.) wide open in a folder facing up where I can see.
Things got even worse inside Dr. Young's office. Pile and pile of document piled up perhaps 10 feet tall from the desk, which I believe it will be a hazard if earthquake hit. Couple dirty coffee mug were just sitting around. I would say a college dorm room would probably be more neat that Dr. Young's office.

Conclusion
----
As mentioned previously, despite the high medical cost in this country, I have full respect to people who work in the medical field.
Because most of my experience with a doctor, dentist or even optometrist were pleasant (Maybe except when the time of paying), and they were all very professional.
However, Dr. Young is sure one of a kind. Not only was that he rude and uncaring. But he actually upselling some stuffs and use threat to push it, which I would only expect it in an auto repair shop. Everything was just unbelievable. read more
