DO NOT USE DR CHEN My dad has been with this doctor for 30 years and let me tell you - I've told him to switched doctors every year. Not only is he a terrible doctor but his staff, including his wife (reception) do not care at all about their patients. This year, my dad needed to get his refill for his high blood pressure because it ran out. Granted he should have seen the doctor before the refill ran out but at 70 year old, you forget things. His crazy reception wife wouldn't let him make an appointment to see him until a month later which at that point it's too late. Her reasoning is because she doesn't want to stay 15 minutes later in the day to accommodate my dad to get his refill prescribed by the doctor. I'll be reporting him and his staff to the medical board and also to BBB as this is insane behavior and could cause a medical emergency due to his negligence. WORST DOCTOR EVER. read more

I saw Dr Chen in 2008 for the first time. I had asthma and later had other issues like Pneumothorax (collapsed lungs). I saw him after my first episode of Pneumothorax, and under his care, I took several X-ray every few months. And the doctor didn't warned me a big bleb was getting bigger. And that resulted in me having another more serious Pneumothorax in 2009. Another issue was that Dr Chen also told me to take Zyrtec-D to control mucus and cough. It was very effective in controlling the cough, so I started taking it everyday. It turned out to be a bad idea, because taking Zyrtec-D dries up my bronchial tubes and can cause more serious asthma and pneumothorax. Not to mention raising my heart rate and blood pressure. Fortunately after my third Pneumothorax, I went to see a Stanford lung doctor, who prescribed me Nebulizer to clear my bronchial tubes and finally persuaded me to give up Zyrtec-D. By the way, their office staff are bad too. That maybe due to they have few patients so they want to get every dollar they can. read more

The worst kind of doctor you could get--the one that only cares about money and not his patients. We tried making an appointment for my 85 year old grandmother, who has been having flu-like symptoms. Her symptoms took a turn for the worse when she started getting a fever today. We called Dr. Chen's office to try and get the earliest appointment and his front desk assistant (who is apparently, his wife) told us they are closed tomorrow (Wednesday, not yet Thanksgiving). We asked if he could see her today, since her symptoms were getting worse. The front desk's response? A curt "No," and, "If you think she's so sick, then send her to the emergency room," Bedside manner is absolutely disgusting from their staff. The only reason I can see people coming here is because Taiwanese people want to keep it "within the community". I would never recommend anyone to see Dr. Chen as their family doctor. read more

My family have been seeing Dr. Chen for about twenty years. He is very caring and thorough. We particularly like his no non-sense approach. He would refer his patients to specialists as he sees it necessary as he referred my wife to Stanford at one occasion. We were very very grateful for that referral. He would not write any prescription or services just because patients ask. So do not go to see him for any Medicare services he deems frivolous and unnecessary. He'd rather you go see other providers on that. While his schedule is tight, usually they can squeeze us in, even after business hours. read more

DO NOT SEE Dr Chen. BE AWARE. My dad has been with Dr Tony Chen, primary care physician for over 30 years. I just called the office to make an appointment for my dad as he feels acid reflex is bothering him recently, and was stunned to be told (by receptionist) that Dr Chen will no longer see him because he hasn't had check-up this year, and he missed one or two appointment last year. I apologized immediately over the phone for my dad missing the appointment, as he might have been, being 92-year-old. My Dad's philosophy has always been no doctor visit if all is well, e.g. why bother going to doctor's office to contract germs. That said.. I believe this is unethical practice from Dr Chen. read more

DR. Chen's wife should improve her service to patients. She should be retired and let young clerk to take over.

Very friendly and nice doctor. Been seeing him for over 10 years. I trust him not to over medicate me when I need his help. When you have an urgent issue, they'll squeeze you in the same day if you can wait a little bit when they're busy. Seriously the only negative thing is the music he has on. Country radio. read more

There are two office front desk clerks. One is very nice, the older one is horrible. Very mean attitude and bad personality. The office cares about money more than anything else. During the 5+- minutes the doctor sees me, he would spend 20% of the time complaining how little the insurance paid him. Then the insurance explanation of benifits came, you can see the high $ they charged for that 5+- minutes. read more

So, I joined yelp today so I could write this review. I have always used Yelp to read reviews but I have never felt the need to write one...until today. Here goes... I have been a patient of Dr. Chen's for several years. I am one of those guys that does not like to see the doctor for every little thing. I actually appreciated his "straight, to the point" attitude and how quickly visits to his office finished. He has always answered all of my questions but he does not provide advice or counseling voluntarily. The 1 star review is a result of his staff and/or Dr. Chen's unwritten prescription drug refill policy. I have asthma, which requires(on occasion) a rescue inhaler during physical activity. I have had asthma for my entire life and have been using some form of albuterol since I can remember. It is a standard medication used for almost all asthma patients. Recently, I called upon Dr. Chen's office to refill my prescription. I had seen the doctor for my yearly physical 7 months before this refill request. It was also approximately 2 months since my medication was refilled(standard time). So, you can imagine how shocked I was when Dr. Chen's staff refused to refill my medication. Keep in mind, this is a "rescue" inhaler. Meaning it is used during potentially life threatening asthma attacks. Dr. Chen's staff stated that they would not refill my medicine until I came in for a visit. When I explained that I was there for a physical(only 7 months ago) she stated that their policy is for checkups every 6 months. When I asked for a copy of her stated policy, she said it's only a verbal policy. Riiiiiiiiiiigght... My experience has always been that a doctor would not refill prescriptions if you had not seen them for over 1 year. From what I've read, that is the law. But, having a doctor that refuses to refill a prescription drug(one that they prescribed in the first place) because you have not seen them for 6 months is ludicrous. I felt like my rescue inhaler prescription was being held hostage for the quick dollar they would make by "seeing" me at an appointment. This happened on a Friday, one in which I was unable to see them that day because of prior commitments. I scheduled an appointment for the following Monday and she still refused to refill the prescription. At one point, she stated that if I needed a rescue inhaler over the weekend that I should quote "go to the emergency room". WOW...WOW...WOW!!! I asked her to have Dr. Chen call me back because that type of treatment was unacceptable. I'm hoping for a quick apology, I'll update the review when I speak with him. read more

I was directed to this doctor for medical help on April 8, 2014 because my family doctor's office is temporarily closed. My experience with the reception is horrible. I talked to a young lady first. This lady was obviously not trained in a professional way, and got me hold on line for over 5 minutes while she was checking with others. Then an older female started talking to me. Unfortunately this one was even worse. She was rude, didn't speak professional English at all. "What do you want ?" was the question she asked, and I explained. She told me "we don't do that check, go and find another doctor", then she hung me up. What could be even worse for someone to experience something like this from a doctor's office ? read more

I rated 1 star because there is no 0 star for rating. It's a result of the receptionist lady--Dr. Chen's wife. She was so mean and rude. I was referred by my family doctor to Dr. Chen for my asthma treatment 2 months ago. Recently I ran out of medications and felt hard to breath. Last Monday, I stepped in his office for walk in visit in the morning. That lady kept sending to emergency room. I told her I can wait because I am 60 years old and under disability. I cannot drive. Eventually I saw Dr. Chen at 3:30pm. I had a question when I got home. Then I called Dr. Chen. She yelled on the phone:" We are so busy...don't call." I told her I just wanted to leave a message to Dr. Chen, he can call me back when he is available. She refused to take my message and hang up my phone. WTH!!! I kept calling 14 times, she picked up and hang up the phone right away. Asthma illness is a potentially life threatening. She really doesn't care about the patients. Now I want to cancel my next appointment. read more

Kind, respectable - not the typical doctor that now overmedicates you and shoves you full of antibiotics for every little thing. People please, it's an immune system, sometimes it's meant to fight off the germs. He's very kind and tries very hard to work for all his patients and although it may seem lazy at times, he is certainly knowledgable in his craft. Definitely not for white people. read more

A very responsible private doctor practioner, with a pretty caring heart. He is a minimalist like most people say, but it's a lot better t han some of the other doctors I've had in the past that have always insisted of overmedication to drive up treatment. It does turn me off sometimes that he is so minimalist in diagnosis, but overall, it's good enough to prevent people from scaring themselves on Web MD. read more

Worst receptionist ever... I called in to make an appointment and verify if they accept my insurance coverage since it says Dr. Chen is in-network on my insurance providers website. I told the lady my plan is part of California care (which is under obamacare) and I immediately got denied and was told they do not accept my insurance.. This practice is definitely operating in means of profit rather than compassionate care. Stay away.. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Chen for many years. Comparing him with many other doctors, Dr. Chen is a OK one in terms of professional knowledge. Unfortunately, one of his office clerk, happened to be his wife, is not so helpful, particularly in situations patients needing extra assistance and/or in things needing flexibility. Such experience of mine echoed the one star reviews below from others! That experience suggests that money seems more important than caring and/or curing patients of her office! Through past many years, I'm disappointed to say... I will not reconsider this office. Another piece of info that I find important to viewers: If you are a patient, you have the rights to find out which drug company is paying your doctor by checking out below government website: openpaymentsdata.cms.gov As a patient, you have the rights to know this kind of info to ensure that 1) you know what's driven behind your prescription in certain situations (for example, if you are suspicious about a drug and/or procedure your doctor prescribed to you), and 2) your doctor is not pushing pain & profit before patient (i.e. you). read more

If there is a -5 star I can choose to rate this doctor and the office, I would not be hesitate to do so. Receptions are rude, judgmental and obnoxious. Dr Chen doesn't care about his patients at all. Mis-diagnosed my asthma which caused me going to ER by an ambulance in the middle of the night after a week. Horrible place to put your health on the line. read more
