A bike carrier hitch failed on my vehicle while I was driving at highway speed. The carrier and bikes came off, landed upright, and spun around in the roadway. This could have caused a major accident. Jose, who happened to be nearby, avoided hitting it, stopped traffic, and took control of the situation. He carried the hitch and bikes to the side of the highway and then helped me safely navigate backing down the shoulder so I could retrieve everything. He had absolutely nothing to gain by helping me. In fact, he put himself at risk to protect other drivers and help a complete stranger. I tried to give him $50 as a thank-you, and he refused to accept it.
