Went here to have a "haircut repair" after i went to a place called Renaissance Hair Salon & Day Spa down the street which, btw, is a total nightmare of a dump. Fx is way ahead of its competition. This review is for the GYM facilities ONLY. If you are looking for a gym that was designed as a man cave with more flat screen and LCD displays than equipment in a business office park than this is your gym. Staff are college age physical trainers that may be knowledgeable, but are more interested in showing off by slamming weights around and letting the weights clank rather than showing the correct form and usage of equipment. Personal trainers are only available on their schedule and will not change their schedule to accomodate your working day. The facilities are GREAT for watching ESPN since almost every machine, flat screen, etc. even in the bathrooms are tuned to the channel. The only thing missing is a bartender and a beverage. However, the facilities are limited as there is only 1 small room for group classes and when there is a class, they tend to take over and monopolize some of the equipment. This gym has apparently outgrown its space as you will see groupss playing ball and other activities in the parking lot in front of the main gym enterance making parking and leaving some times difficult. How this facility got rated Baltimore's Best by Baltimore magazine I would like to know? The facility is small, the equipment is limited and the staff is moderate at best. For the same price you can go to the nearby MAC and get 3 swimming pools, basketball court, 2 full gyms of equipment, more classes, more experienced staff and a lot more room. I suggest anyone looking at this gym go to the MAC (especially the Timonium location) and give them a try. If you are looking for a man cave away from home to say you went to the gym, then this is tthe place. read more

Let me preface by saying when it comes to getting my haircut I can be lazy, so sometimes it can take me a year to get a cut and color, therefore, I live with massive split ends for a while. I have curly hair and when it is straightened, they aren't "as noticeable." Needless to say when someone at work recommended a convenient salon near work, FX Studios and a stylist in particular, I jumped on it and booked an appointment. I went two times and the first time was nice, I liked the ambiance of the room to yourself, the movies and the ice cream and refreshments. I didn't have a problem with the haircut but I also didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I liked the color and I thought the prices were reasonable for what I was used too. It did take 2.5 hours and I had to leave early (before my hair was fully dry) due to a prior engagement. I'm used to a cut and color taking no more than 2 hours so I didn't plan properly. Then the second time I went (a year later due to laziness) I got a cut, color for both my hair and eyebrows. I booked an earlier appointment incase it ran long and this time it started 30 minutes late and took 3 hours, again I had to rush and leave before my hair was fully finished. This time is when I got upset with my hair cut and eyebrow color job, but I did like the hair color. I have very blond eyebrows, almost to the point where you can't see them, so I got them darkened for the first time in my life. It was hard to see everything with the lighting in the room and I noticed the imperfections when I got home, she missed a spot. No one else really noticed and due to my laziness I stopped caring. Then I started to wear my hair curly again, since I go through spouts of straight and curly. It took me a while to realize why I didn't like wearing my hair down. She didn't cut any layers into it, around my face and it just wouldn't fall correctly, but due to laziness I didn't care that much... As a side note, my friend who recommended me has said that in the past the stylist had also forgotten to layer around her face...Then after a couple weeks of trying to figure out the hair style I started to care. I paid $55 for the haircut (the stylist got a promotion so now it would be $65), I should care is what I thought. So I called and asked if it was something she could fix. My hair didn't get layered and its curly, which is bad. So think of it as really flat on top and super puffy on the bottom, its like a triangle head. During the appointment she was rushing and frazzled and almost forgot to do my eyebrows and apparently also forgot to layer my hair. So I get a call to make an appointment asking if the stylist could just fix my layers. I said I would pay half or something (I didn't think it was worth $65 to fix) and come in with straight hair so it goes quickly. I made the appointment and asked to be called back if there was a problem. Well the receptionist called back saying that the stylist thinks I'm unhappy because it has been 6 weeks (I understand 6 weeks is a long time to wait, but thats why I prefaced I'm lazy) and my hair has just grown out. When I get a hair cut once a year it grows about 4 inches, which means in the 6 weeks my hair has grown 0.4 inches. I'm pretty sure thats not why I'm unhappy. I'm unhappy because my hair isn't layered and I have a cone head. But did they care... No. I told the receptionist that I would find a new hair stylist and she didn't seem to care and seemed a little smug. When I continued to tell her why I was finding a new one (not that she or the stylist cared) she didn't even apologize for the bad service. Are the gimmicks of the hair salon cool, yeah sure. But worth it NO. I can buy myself a $1.50 soda and ice cream. I mean come on I'm paying $150 for a hair cut I think I can get the other things. I just want someone that cares and doesn't take forever to cut my hair. read more

I went here for several years and loved it. However, I moved from Baltimore to Washington DC, then spent the next year trying to find a place to get my hair cut in the DC area. I have been going here for the past 6 years about once a month. This is honestly the zenith of hair salons that I've been to. Easily the best in the Baltimore area. I go and see Heather each time and she is super helpful with getting my hair just the way I want it every time. Whenever I leave I truly feel that a "Professional" just cut my hair and thus why I call them "pro-cuts." Unlike hair cuttery or similar places, the stylist will actually listen to your odds and ends that you have with your hair like a difficult cowlick or a spot on your head where hair can grow abnormally. Heather will then take this into account when cutting your hair. She also goes over your hair cut verbally step by step to tell you what she is doing and why. I like having the "science" behind each cut. Also they will recommend products that you can use and how to use them to always keep your hair looking its best. Furthermore, this place goes above and beyond because I was told by Heather that in the future, if I have any problems with doing my hair, that I can call in and ask for some tips and advice on what to do like working in a product while blow drying at the same time to get my desired volume. So the actual haircut is amazing. But what about the service? Well, it's just as great! Honestly if you look up the word service in the dictionary, I bet you'd see the employees at FX Studios. I've only seen quality people work here. They are energetic, kind, respectful, super helpful and will do their best to cater to your every need. I'd like to give a special shout out to the great work done by Christa, Courtney, and Allie in the guest relations department for doing an awesome job! Keep it up ladies. As for price....I'm not going to lie, I miss the old days of paying $25 dollars for my haircut here (minus tip). Then it went to $30 and I was still relatively ok with that, but it's starting to get a little excessive at $33. I don't know what I'll do if it hits $35! or even $40!!! Might take my business elsewhere.... With all this being said though, you really do get what you pay for: 1. Pro haircut 2. Unique and special treatment (you feel like a celebrity!) 3. beverages, complimentary Heineken for those over 21 3. Complimentary ice cream from coldstone 4. fresh look and feel. Be honest, how many times do you leave a haircut feeling like a million bucks? This place is great for any salon service you seek. I've gotten numerous hair cuts, waxes and even used to go to their drop-in kickboxing classes during my lunch. Salon: amazing. Definitely customer centered. I like that they keep notes of your past visits so even if you see a different stylist/aesthetician they know what you did last time and don't have to start from ground zero. I also like that hair cuts are done in private rooms so you can choose to just relax and watch tv/movie instead of having to make conversation (though everyone is friendly enough if that's what you prefer). Gym: Also had a great experience here. I really like that all of their fitness classes are a la carte so you do not need to be a member to participate. When I worked up in Hunt Valley I used to do classes during my lunch break- they have a locker room and shower so easy enough to do. Overall: Never had a bad experience. I no longer work in Hunt Valley but still make the drive from Baltimore City whenever I need a hair cut. read more

I have been going to FX for several years until moving out of the area a few months ago. I have never been disappointed. All of the staff are top notch and the entire experience is very relaxing. I recently visited, toured, and had a men's Final Cut here. I was quite reluctant to even try it out given the higher cost than what I have always paid elsewhere, but it was well worth every dollar. The place is amazing and the most customer focused, certainly for a hair styling salon (just the tip of the iceberg - fitness center, Wellness center, and more), of any business I have ever visited. Although I'm sure I won't watch every movie showing the days I am there, the free drinks and ice cream are a great perk. My stylist, Jen D was amazing as well! After bouncing around over the past few years searching for someone with both a good personality and talent to cut/style my hair, it was such a delight to find someone SO talented. Far surpassed my expectations, and I'm tough to please as you can see by my other Yelp reviews. The only negative is finding the place the first time, as others have commented. Once you turn on to Pepper Rd from Schilling, don't be impatient to turn; several blocks down there is a sign on your right, then head to the end of the first large long building. It is actually pretty well documented on Google maps, not so great on Waze. Give them a try. read more

I enjoyed my experience. Love the private manicure and pedicure rooms with individual televisions. The complimentary drinks were a nice touch as well. Little pricey but worth the cost. Today was my first visit to FX studios. I couldn't be happier with my experience. Top notch treatment from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. The receptionist was very helpful and nice, explaining everything to me simply and politely. My stylist was superb! She asked all the right questions to find out what I wanted. My haircut turned out amazing, and the scalp massage completely relaxed me. Plus, getting to watch Captain America in my own private room while I got my haircut was awesome!! 6.5 hours later...I have a free haircut, color and bad taste in my mouth. I arrive at 2:40pm for my appointment with Kat. We started the appointment with a friendly conversation about what I wanted done. I requested a balayage on my dark brown hair and included a picture. I specifically stated how I did not want a brassy/yellow/orange look to my hair. Kat said the style was doable and we continued on. Kat started work on my hair. She made a comment about how she didn't have enough time to do a balayage and my idea wasn't balayage anyway so she'd be doing an ombré. I stated how I did not like ombré and wanted a style as close to what I had mentioned and showed her as possible. 1st red flag. 3.5 hours later I have the worst ombré I have ever seen. It is everything I did not want and did not ask for. My hair at this point is half orange/brassy half dark brown. Yuck! She continues to make the situation worse by ripping through my hair so ferociously, that I take the comb from her and do it myself. She cuts my hair in a hacksaw manor and forgets what I asked for in the initial consult. I had to re-direct her to add layers as well as frame my face. After this she blow drys my hair and I see smoke coming from behind me. More red flags. She then cancels her appointments and decides to re-bleach my hair. She states at this point she wouldn't charge me for this second round of bleach. After 3 more hours of bleaching, my hair looks no different than before and she continues to blow dry my hair and make it smoke again. My hair looks like an at home bleach dye job from a box. At this point it is after 9pm and I am fed up with Kat's antics. She states "I think your service might be free today." WELL DUH! This was the WORST experience I've ever had at a professional salon. I spoke to the manager and my services for the day were free. If coming to this salon I would NOT by ANY means recommend Kat for a hair cut or color. read more

I have been going here for about 10 years now, granted it has been on an off and more times in some years than others. However, I always highly recommend this place and the only thing I would adjust is for them to have treatment rooms. My whole family goes here and several times I have given gift certificates to friends for this place. I have never had a complaint. To be honest, there was a short time when there were younger staff at the desk and they were not as welcoming as others. Now, they were NOT rude, but they did not give the same attention as their more seasoned counterparts. Therefore, if you were used to a certain level of attention and detail, it was lacking when with them. However, that has not been the case recently. I unfortunately tried out an establishment (the owner's wife and a manager were so convincing); however, I have since regretted not taking my money here to FX Studios. It would have meant less services (as FX Studios is priced higher) but oh my - the quality of service from entering to leaving would have been significantly better and totally worth the price difference. The absolute worst salon ever, although they think they are top notch. Had to wait 50 minutes for my scheduled appointment. The sylist did not dry my hair and I left with a wet head on Feb. 18, 2011. I looked like a Freak with a wet head in Feb. Also, the stylist only washed my hair 1 time, I use a lot of stying products and one wash is not enough. Never got the head massage that was supposed to be included in the price. The room where the stylist works is excessively DARK, and instead of a mirror in front of you while getting the haircut, there is a movie screen (with old rerun movies) so you can't see what the stylist is doing. I called someone in management to complain, she simply replied,"I am sorry for your experience." No offer or suggestion to come back for the massage and a proper experience. I'll NEVER go back there or suggest FX to anyone. read more

Beautiful, clean, efficient polite staff. Interesting concept for a salon with the private rooms. But I don't like the private rooms-I like the back and forth and intimate conversations you can get in a salon between other hair stylists and other clientle. It's actually something I look forward to. Also those rooms are SO dark-I guess so the TV screen can be seen. I didn't enjoy that aspect of it. So I had a grown out bob-basically all one length, which is what I wanted a bob-chin length. It looked okay when I left but by the time I washed it I realized there were half a dozen hairs that were not cut in the back and were 5 inches longer than the rest of my hair-now my hair is wavy and can curl up but how do you miss that? I'd go back if there was a normal set up in the salon area and I'd obviously get another stylist. She was really kind, calm, cute, well dressed and someone I'd like my son to date but she needs more practice on cutting hair read more

The staff is extremely courteous and helpful, the facility is well-maintained, always looks like new, and at the risk of making the others jealous, Karen is without a doubt the best stylist I have ever found! Paige doesn't know how to cut men's hair. Harsh but true. I asked for a taper/fade and she literally couldn't do it. She pretended to, but she didn't. She actually said she thinks mens' hairstyles should be square. So if you dig Frankenstein's hair, she's your girl. I know I have difficult hair, but what barber/stylist can't blend/fade two blades? I don't know many guys that don't want some shape to their hair. I get a better haircut for less than half the price at the corner barbershop. Literally one of the worst haircuts I've had and the most expensive (website says $36, but they charged $40. Scalp massage was great, though. Sorry, she just doesn't know what she's doing. This is a terrible haircut and I don't see how she could ever give a decent one based on the skills she displayed. read more

Wow, where was my scalp massage, wine and personal attention? I received a gift card for my birthday and I am sorry I did. My cut was crooked and sub-par, and my color brassy. When I called to express my concern that my hair looked burned, it took more than 3 days to return my call and then, when they finally called, I got a lengthy discussion as to how I must be mistaken. There is no longer the 125% guarantee my sister told me about, so to get my money back was a true chore--I guess they no longer want to back up their work. Plus, they wanted to "correct" the problem--NO WAY. I am not sure what the fuss is all about. I am extremely disappointed. read more
