Vastly superior to Travelodges though sometimes almost as cheap, or even cheaper when they offer special deals (three nights for the price of two, etc). The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, with plenty of storage and a superior standard of furniture and fittings. Our room had a telephone, large flat-screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities with lots of teabags, hot chocolate and fresh biscuits each day. In addition to the large bed was a plush two-seater settee. The en-suite had a large power shower and, again, the tiling and fittings were of a high standard for a budget hotel. There's a modern lift to rooms (very good disabled access), beautiful carpets and curtains, and a foyer with local information and a sweets and chocolate machine. Breakfast came free with the room rate and was served across a short walkway in the Jack Rabbit pub. It consisted of a continental-style buffet with an excellent choice of cereals, fruit juices, fresh fruit, yoghurt, breads, toast, preserves and croissants. A machine provided good quality teas or coffees. You can eat as much as you wish and there are helpful staff on hand to assist if need be. A free newspaper (Daily Mail) was also available each day. All in all, a superb value package at only £89 for 3 nights (the special offer this month)! Certainly a chain to watch - there are 200 branches around the country and more planned.

Just off the A38 from Exeter, it was perfect located just a few miles from the hospital It's right next door to a Beefeater restaurant, where the breakfasts are served. Parking can be tight in the evening due to the restaurant. An alternative for food is to nip to the large Sainsbury supermarket just across the road Check in was quick and efficient and the staff were always there with a cheerful greeting every time I walked past reception My room was large with a comfortable bed. I think they're trying to go upmarket a little with a choice of firm pillows on the bed with softer pillows available in the cupboard. The house itself has a colourful history: a 16th Century Tudor Manor House that once hosted the likes of Sir Walter Raleigh, it was remodelled in the 17th Century. The owners - the Parker family - moved permanently to nearby Saltram House in the 18th Century and the house, let to farmers, slowly deteriorated. It was partly demolished around 1800, but continued to be occupied until shortly after World War II. It was restored and rebuilt as a hotel 1986-7 and restored again after a fire in 1989. The Spa is a very recent addition. It's hard to describe as a hotel without the description sounding like that of a country house. The exterior has two splendid square towers, a smaller tower enclosing the large 17th staircase, and a wealth of Tudor doorways and windows. Inside, old doors abound, but the most impressive room by far is the lounge bar, located in the Great Hall. This has an original doorway and a restored fireplace dated 1640, with the Royal Arms of Ling Charles and two huge plaster caryatids (statues) representing peace and plenty. The decorated plaster ceiling is actually a modern pastiche, as is the panelling, but the staircase incorporates genuine 17th Century fragments. Off the bar are the Brasserie restaurant (where we ate) and the first floor gallery is used for both fine dining and breakfast. There's a "secret" bar accessed through a hidden door, and a quiet rear lounge. It's all furnished with large, traditional sofas and chairs. Rooms are scattered throughout the main house, and the former outbuildings and barns. In the main house, some are large and splendid in the four poster style, other spacious and modern (in the annex), but ours, in the east wing, was a more standard modern double, as you might find in a Marriott or Holiday Inn, albeit with two foot thick stone walls. Overall, we had a very comfortable stay. The bed was fabulous, and the room had nice touches such as a jar of locally baked shortbread with the tea/coffee facilities, fresh milk, water from the hotel's own artesian well. The toiletries were lovely if strongly scented. The breakfast was a mixture of cold buffet and hot food cooked to order, with vegetarian options. Both breakfast and dinner were fine, if not outstanding. (Dinner around £60 for two with a glass of wine.) Otherwise staff (mostly in their 20s) were lovely, ever present, and eager to please. The highlight, though, is the Spa. This includes a 20m swimming pool; a large hot water pool with an outdoor jacuzzi and several different water features; a well-equipped gym; two saunas, two steam rooms and a lapidarium, all with various treatments available. It's fitted to a high standard and free to hotel guests. We spent a couple of hours there before dinner every day. Practicalities: there are three car parks, the house bring accessed by a narrow drive, off a minor road on the edge of the sprawling suburb of Plympton. A car is pretty much essential, as it's up a steep hill and some way from public transport (it's about 5 miles from Plymouth station). It's well located to drive into southern Dartmoor, or the beautiful Saltram House and it's park (National Trust).

Am I glad I did, our room was in the courtyard away from the main building and it was an extremely comfortable, clean modern room that was extremely spacious with a lovely en suite I have to say this must be the best nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel, being in its own grounds there was no traffic or street noise and not even a peep from other guests. This was finally topped off with a superb full English breakfast. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a comfortable and peaceful nights stay in the Plymouth area

Beware the parking lot underneath the hotel, it is very cramped and difficult to navigate.Luckily they have additional outdoor parking across the road- but reception did not tell me about it. Also- this hotel is located on Armada way... my iPhone GPS took me to the other end of Armada way but the middle portion of Armada way is a pedestrian shopping street- and it is not obvious that the street continues on the other side. After driving around for 20 minutes we had to ask a taxi driver where the hotel was.

We were right by the lifts which might have disturbed some people, but didn't really us. The reception was pretty hectic on arrival. Just the one lady with an awkward American guest trying to get some duct tape. I don't think that is on the list of forgotten essentials. Luckily toothpaste was as we'd neglected to bring any! The receptionist was quite stressed finding us a room too..she kept calling upstairs and asking about the state of transition of various other rooms before finally finding us one clean and ready to go. The location is great only a couple of minutes walk from the Hoe and maybe 5 minutes (if you know the right path) from the Barbican area. The pool and gym areas were rather nice. I was a bit disgruntled at the 20 quid charge if we wanted wi-fi for our stay!

I didnt stay at the hotel, and unfortunately, we arrived a bit too early to eat dinner, so cant really provide any reviews relating to either of those things. What I can however talk about is the thrill and sheer exuberance I felt, walking around in the parking lot of the Old School Hotel, seeing the Doc's house, the lovely Harbor bay below, Bert and Al Large's restaurant - it was like visiting an old familiar house! The staff here were super friendly, even when I do think the must get super tired of all the gawking tourists, and cant wait to come back here another time and hopefully this time, experience dinner too! In any case, I came here without a reservation, and I was promptly assigned to the Chemistry room. The room was small (but I did ask for the cheapest they had), but I remember how comfortable it was. I was a big fan of all the pillows on the bed, into which I sank with pleasure. It had an ensuite bathroom, and it was very warm and cozy. I especially liked the view across the harbor. They had a very nice little bar near the reception, and the dinner I had there (fish) was elegant and excellent. A nice couple from Cornwall that I had drank with earlier even invited me to join them. I still remember the conversation. I'd highly recommend staying here while in Port Iaasic.
