In July 2019 I purchased a electrically operated recliner/lounge chair from Furniture Fair in Florence, KY. I paid nearly $3000.00 which included the chair, sales tax and a 5 year " Protection Plan ". The manufacturer of the chair is Ultra Comfort America of Old Forge, PA. In February 2021, less than 19 months into the 5 year Protection Plan period, the chair collapsed. The Protection Plan remains in effect until July 2024.
Upon inspection underneath the chair I could see that the lifting mechanism for the chair back had disconnected from the connecting point, pivoted down to make contact with the floor, gouged the floor and broken in half. I could also see that the pivot pin that connected to a cross bar had fallen out causing the collapse. It was obvious that the cotter pin that was supposed to secure that pivot pin was never inserted at initial assembly allowing it, over time, to work its way out and result in the collapse.
I filed a claim with the company that administered the " Protection Plan " (Montage FS). 5 months later they sent a technician and he replaced the lifting mechanism. When the replacement was tested it made a Snap, Snap Snap noise both when the chair back was reclined and again when it was raised back up. When I used the chair that same night, it broke again. The connection point broke. It is obvious that the tech failed to check for collateral damage caused by the initial failure.
Several months later, the store I bought the chair from (Furniture Fair, Florence, KY) sent a technician with another lifting mechanism. Upon inspection of the initial replacement I could see a couple of dents in the motor case of the initial replacement which led me to believe that it was installed incorrectly and made contact with other parts of the chair causing unknown additional damage. Somewhere in the timeline of failures the metal where the lifting mechanism connects to the anchor point extension that is welded to the cross bar cracked. After a lifting mechanism was connected to the anchor point the pressure to the metal caused it to bend to a 90 angle away from where it was supposed to be. The chair remained unusable and remains unusable to this day. read more
