    Spicy Thai pie
    John B.

Savory pie shops are a ubiquitous Australian institution up and down the coast. However, I have not patronized one, as they are not that vegetarian-friendly and seem a tad sketch to me. Enter this all-vegan place, loaded with delicious-sounding options. You're not missing out on anything in these pies; there's plenty of fat and protein to make them a complete and filling meal. They're well worth the price, and the spicy Thai pie I tried was certainly craveably delicious, both in its flaky crust and satisfying filling. You can order mashed potatoes or salad on the side and they have a few other items, but I feel confident in saying that the pies are the main attraction, and they are a winner. Besides the restaurant, they also deliver, even to Brisbane. If they don't get around to expanding up here, I wonder if it might be worth it, as there are no other places like this that I am aware of.

Jesus. Amazing! All vegan so you don't have to think about it. Delicious pies with mashed potatoes and peas. Chocolate bars. Milkshakes. Tiny place, though, so only a few can sit here at a time. Excellent!

I love a good pie as much as the next person, but I admittedly am as much a pie snob as I am a pizza and coffee snob. If it 'aint primo, I'd rather have nothing. Funky Pies are about as primo as pies get, with the added benefit for a vegetarian who tries to keep as fair trade and eco-friendly as possible (and affordable) of being, you guessed it, vegetarian and "eco-funky" (cute)! And, joy of joys for my regular, hyper-allergic eating partner they make gluten-free versions of these marvellous testaments to pie-dom. Hurrah! I inhaled a Funky Chunky- shitake mushroom pie, yeah that's right! And it was spectacular. Chunk up your funk with the mash, mushy peas n' gravy add-ons.

When I think 'vegan', the terms 'delicious', 'awesome' and 'moreish' generally don't spring to mind. Funky Pies might just be able to sway me on that one after a recent taste test of one of their meat, dairy and animal product-free baked meals. This unassuming little shop seems a bit out of place amongst Bondi's trendy cafés and attractive crowd, with just a small door and plain sign advertising its goods. They have a bunch of different savoury pie fillings, like the No Wurry Curry with lentils and chickpeas in a coconut sauce and the Chilli-non-Carne made of mushroom nuggets, kidney beans, bits of green capsicum and spicy tomato salsa. I went for the Funky Chunky. As a total meat lover and having tried vegan (that is, butterless) pastry before and vowed to never do so again - it tasted as close to cardboard as I'll ever get - I approached my pie with great apprehension. What a pleasant surprise it was. The shiitake mushrooms filling had been processed to look like large chunks of beef and, though a little spongy, really did mimic that soft, easy-to-chew texture of slow-cooked meat, while the gravy it was smothered in had a bit of earthy, mushroom flavour but overall carried off a rich, meaty taste. That was topped with a layer of mashed potato, which wasn't as creamy as usual due to the lack of butter but still added a nice contrast to the richness of the 'meat'. The pastry was definitely fattening - indicated by the immense amount of oil that leaked onto my takeaway brown paper bag - but was super flaky and light nonetheless. They also serve fairtrade, organic coffee, serve their products on biodegradable packaging, and have a range of gluten-free pies for flourphobes - an ethical approach that makes everything taste that little bit better.

Really delicious vegan pies, I couldn't believe how well they could create a tender meaty taste they way they do. I think someone told me it was pulverised mushrooms? Wherever it was, it was delicious. The only reason for 4/5 stars was the seating. Really cramped space, so you best be ready to get cozy if you're eating in.

Yay for Funky Pies. I think it's best if you go during the day for lunch, because at night you'll be left with only a few options and the pies would have been sitting there for a while. Met with chill, friendly service, we had a look to see what was left for the day. On the menu they have a decent variety, all vegan, and I was quite pleased they still had one rustic Bolognese pie left as it was the one I wanted to try. The other one we tried was the chilli non carne (mushroom nuggets, kidney beans & capsicum in a mild chilli tomato salsa). Pies are $6.50 and $12 including a side. They no longer had any mash, peas & gravy left so we went for a salad. As mentioned on the menu, the crust is indeed flaky and delicious. Makes for a premium pie. But the filling is also important, and Funky Pies do not disappoint. Both were super tasty, if I had to pick only one I'd say the chilli non carne was slightly better, but only just. The capsicum and tomato salsa did it for me. As delicious as the crust was, the pies could do with a bit more filling, but this is so minor because the pies were really that good. So good, so worth checking out, and I'm glad to have gotten around to it finally as these guys have been on my list for ages!

Funky Monkey? Funky chunky? Lol so good

This restaurant is super cute and the service was really great!! I ordered the funky monkey (I believe) and it was SO GOOD. Would never even guess it is vegan. The mashed potatoes as well as gravy and peas were also delicious. The two girls working there were super friendly. It is a very casual place and not all the pies are offered everyday. Definitely will return though!!

We went here for lunch, earned a pie by walking along the Eastern Coastal Beach Walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach. The Pies and sides were great, flakey and hot. Comfortable outdoor seating. Other Vegan groceries available including takeaway cheesecakes.

Inexpensive and delicious. I got a pie that was supposed to have mushrooms in it, but actually came with fake meat. It was very tasty anyway. The crust was a little chewy, but still great. The filling was very savory and had a depth to it that I don't always see in vegan food. They'll serve it with mashed potatoes, peas, and gravy for a little extra. Yummmmm... I wish I had this near me. Australia is good at vegan savory pies. The seating area outside is also adorable. It was a great place to sit and read or just enjoy the weather.

The decor is like walking into their family room, pictures on ledges, a lucky cat, magazine rack.. But don't be fooled - the food is fantastic. My top recommendations are definitely the pho (beef noodle soup with fresh herbs), whole deep fried fish with fish sauce, lemongrass, lemon and chili sauce, the fresh pork & prawn rolls and the chicken salad. But that's because we use it as our 'guilt-free' healthy dinner option (maybe except for the whole, fried fish, though it's surprisingly non-greasy). But the caramelised fish and the hot pots are lovely as well. BYO and take away are an added bonus. Try it and it'll become a staple!
