I've been shopping at Funky Monkey for years. It's located on Magazine, my favorite area to hang out, browse and shop. It's a vintage thrift store but they also sell a limited number new items. I visit when I need a unique piece or even a costume or wig. The pricing is usually reasonable depending on the piece. They're very particular when choosing what to buy and I appreciate that as a buyer. I've sold a few things but im always surprised by what they choose to skip on in terms of high end gently worn items from my own closet. In any case, I respect their methods. The staff is usually pretty helpful though not always the most enthusiastic. However, I understand everyone has rough days. My daughter and I went shopping at Funky Monkey and the prices were way too high, however they have been in the higher side for a while. However, last weekend the prices on anything we were seeing was between $68-$100 and up. After 10 min we left. I was looked down upon going into the busines. I had a few things that were new that I couldn't fit anymore I was accused of stealing the items which I have proof that I brought it. I guess me being a black woman they assumed I was trying to sale stolen goods. I would have been okay with them just saying none of my items didn't go with the things they sell. This is a cute little vintage shop on Magazine street in New Orleans we found while walking a bit after lunch. We love thrifting and vintage shopping, so of course we had to go in! Inside, we had to drop off our drinks and water bottles at the front counter, which I totally understand since I would hate to accidentally get something on their amazing stuff! Anyway, this store has men and women clothing from different decades! We certainly found a few items we loved! I came excited to sell some very nice clothes and instead got bad attitudes, ripped bags, and taken advantage of. I would give 0 stars if I could, and I will not be returning. Clothes are overpriced and size exclusive (only smalls and mediums). Even if you do decide to buy something, you can't because their card reader is broken. Had an awful experience at Funky Monkey. My wife bought me a suit here as a present, wasn't sure about the fit so double checked the return policy and saw I had 14 days. I tried it on and it didn't fit, so I took it right off and brought it right back in, tags still on. The woman working there informed me that they consider it a costume item and it can't be returned. I explained that my wife didn't know it had been considered a costume and all I wanted to do was switch for a bigger size. They refused to try to help me out, and acted like I was being a jerk for asking them to consider bending the policy. I understand having a return policy, but even after she acknowledged I was just trying to switch out a brand new item for a different size she insisted that if she broke the rule this one time every customer would come in trying to return everything. The worst part was my wife called to explain what had happened, and the woman hung up on her mid sentence. Both of us were being polite and just trying to reason with her. I could have bought the same suit for half the price on Amazon, but we try to patronize local stores. What is the point if the service is rude and they refuse to help you in any way. read more

I had no problems when I came here. I walked in and was greeted. I asked a question and the staff member was more than happy to help. I shopped without being harassed which is what I like. I got one of their shirts that that they make for $20 and a bag (not vintage and still regular price) for $28. I googled the bag before I bought it and the brand of Fydelity mini bags cost between $26 - $60 so I didn't feel like I was robbed or got a deal. If you're in the area, definitely check it out this store. If you don't want to get something vintage then check out the shirts they make, they have tons of different designs. read more

Well, it definitely lives up to the name. You will find some very funky finds here, but you will also be treated kind of like a monkey who has just wandered in to throw some poo - that is, the staff will avoid you at all costs. I've been in here several times and have never had a staff member greet me or offer help. If you want to try on clothes, and you have a purse or bag, you must approach an employee and surrender it to them to hold at the counter until you're done, because they don't trust you not to steal their merch, but you're supposed to trust them not to steal/riffle through/post Instagram photos of your belongings. I make sure I don't bring a purse here, but when I've needed to use a dressing room, I accusingly get asked if I have a purse or bag, as though I may be hiding an invisible one, before I'm given permission to try on my finds. That said, there is pretty cool stuff here. So many sequins! So many jumpsuits! So many velour things! So much fabulosity! But the prices...eh. They're not super crazy or anything, just higher than seems necessary for many items. $48 for a floor-length sequined dress? Sure, okay. $48 for a polyester lace-up corset top? Nope. They also have non-costume stuff, or maybe it's just costume stuff for really boring people who consider a madras shirt a dress-up item. Some of it's really cool and unique, but again, pricing is uneven. General take-away: good if you're looking for a fun costume item, but be okay with paying a bit more and interacting with surly salespeople. read more

I had the worst experience this morning. Funky monkey was on the top of my shopping list on this trip to New Orleans and it was certainly the last time I will give the owner and her rude employees that work there any of my money. I had 3 large items I wanted to try on. I was told to give my boyfriend my purse. Ok so first off let's talk about my purse. It was a small crossbody that barely could hold my wallet and phone. Not a backpack, not a tote bag but Something that I couldn't really fit my own belongings let alone try to steal any of theirs. I was told that I would have to leave my stuff at their counter if he did hold it. So let me ask you this especially to the owner whom I spoke to this morning .....you don't trust me to try on your clothes without trying to steal from you but I'm supposed to hand over my bag with my cellphone, money, ID and my personal items to you? And trust that while I'm behind a curtain that you are keeping it safe. That sounds like amazing logic! Your policy is alienating and rude. I wanted to buy handful of things in your store this morning but left because I'd rather not give your business my money. Maybe try not treating potential customers like criminals. read more

I think this is a great place to sale unwanted clothing items. They seem to need Men's Clothing on a consistent basis and always give a fair price. The workers have a good knowledge of fashion and are always friendly. You can also pick up out of the ordinary items and costume pieces. It is a little on the "hipster" side so be prepared. No need to feel like you have to fit a mold when you stop in to the store. We visited New Orleans for the first time a few weeks ago and while exploring Magazine Street we came across this awesome shop. I love vintage clothes from the 1970's and within minutes found the perfect shirt! The staff was incredibly friendly. They talked to us about New Orleans, the fashions in the store, they were delightful stylish young ladies. The price I paid for my shirt was very reasonable too! Yes, most of the staff act like they hate their lives and talking to you is the worst possible task imaginable BUT they do have a great selection of clothes for Halloween, Mardi Gras, costume parties, etc. They also have tons of accessories: hats, jewelry, bags, shoes, wigs, make up, tights. The pricing is weird. Some things are truly great values while other, cheap, and used items are way overpriced. You just have to go digging for the gold amongst some trash. BOOOO HISSS! Okay, so I readily admit I am not a NOLA native. I was down there visiting some friends who are, however. And this is not my first time, either, nor will it be my last. So I don't really consider myself one of those drunk-on-Bourbon-Street-every-night-Katrina-tour-taking-loudmouth-asshole types. As such, I wanted a New Orleans tee shirt that did not scream "I HAVE PARTIED IN NEW ORLEANS AND IT KICKED ASS!" I passed over some of the classics in the French Quarter - "I Got Bourbon Faced on Shit Street" and "DEA: Drunk Every Night" amongst them. In Funky Monkey, I found the perfect tee shirt - a water meter emblem. Cute, kitschy, and not crazy touristy. Alas, the only one on the rack was not my size. BUT WAIT! My boyfriend informed me that there was a sign indicating that they MAKE tee shirts! I walked into the backish area of the store and discovered a wall of tee shirts (actual shirts, not just images) as well as a blank rack of tee shirts. Among the shirts on the wall was the water meter design! Now I hate feeling like a tourist, hate looking like a tourist, and try my best o be respectful and never act like a tourist. So when I went up to the girl working behind the counter and said, "Excuse me? Are the shirts on the wall the designs you can imprint on--" I did not expect to be cut off with a curt, rude, "Mm-hm," and negative eye contact. I can't really convey the attitude without a face to face demonstration, but trust me: she was definitely privately considering just exactly how much better than me she is. Look, sister. I may be a tourist, but until you decided to treat me like something you accidentally and unfortunately stepped in, I was about to spend money in your crappy hipster store. Now I never will, no matter how many times I come to New Orleans, no matter how cool your tee shirt designs may be. Hope it was worth it. read more

This place is insane. Ugly secondhand clothes marked "vintage" that cost $50. Yeah, okay. When I shop at a thrift store (and that is exactly what this place is, don't let the high prices and the fancy word "consignment' trick you) I am doing so because I'm interested in saving money. I'm sorry, but you can't just slap a sticker that says "vintage from the 80's" on something and use that as an excuse to overcharge people. I guess they are targeting tourists and I'm sure some pay the prices, but if you are local, you are way better off just heading on over to the red, white and blue and searching the racks. My family was in New Orleans visiting and stopped here at 5:40. I asked the cashier assistance to get a shirt custom made since their sign said it only took 5-10 minutes. She called another worker who had been hiding in the back. She very abruptly said my son couldn't get the screen print he wanted that was advertised as available. There was actually only about 10 available of the 50 or so advertised on the wall. He quickly selected another style and she began to make the shirt at 5:48. Yes, I checked my phone. At this point, my daughter returned with my husband from a store up the street. She also wanted a shirt and quickly chose her screen print. The worker finished my son's shirt at 5:55 and said that she refused to do another shirt because the store closed at 6. My husband asked if she was seriously refusing a sure sale as a small business, she said yes, it's just not worth it to go past 6:00. As a consumer, I recognize the absurdity of this kind of attitude. If you have the ability to shop elsewhere, I would recommend doing so, since they just don't want the business. read more

I've found something at Funky Monkey for a variety of occasions from a fun tshirt for LSU game day to a vintage black short beaded dress for a 1920s Great Gatsby party. Their stock is ever changing, and I always enjoy popping in there for a quick look-see to find something that suits my fancy. They have a handful of racks that look like market retail, a big tshirt round rack, and then a few vintage racks to look through on the girls side. They also have glittery booty shorts and some costume items for when, ya know, you feel like costuming in New Orleans (a pseudo weekly occurrence). There price range, but everything I've bought I've felt good about the value. The guys side is fun as well, and I've scooped up some retro stuff for my man that he's really liked. I've never gotten a t-shirt made, or sold clothing here, but that staff has always been kind to me. They also have some interesting vintage jewelry and good quality stockings but their styles in stock change. The dressing rooms are a little meh, and I had a kid peepin' on me once but for some of the vintage stuff, I'd definitely suggest trying on to make sure it fits. The above-mentioned black short beaded dress was a goldmine of a find at less than $50 from what I can remember and fit me like a Michael Jackson glittery glove. After having looked all day this was a total score that day, and I've worn it more than enough times to consider it a steal. It's not a one-stop shop for all your needs, but that's what the rest of Magazine is for. I try to avoid going there, unless for some reason I can't find what I'm looking for at Buffalo Exchange or any of the other make-your-own shirt stores in NOLA. First off, I went into this shop with no employee telling me there was a bag check. Went through store and found two dresses to try one, still no employee approached me. After trying on the dresses, that didn't fit I went to leave and a employee and or owner rudely told me I had to check my bag. After being in the store for 5-10 minutes I would have expected that earlier. Selection was nice and fairly priced for visible damage that wasn't repaired on the dresses I tried. Been shopping here for some time now. They have the best selections at Halloween and they are very helpful with the dressing rooms. I find all my accessories here. The staff can be hit or miss. Some days they are cheery and helpful. Other days, I feel like they are shunning me and I'd be doing everyone a favor if I just left... My last visit here was unimpressive. Overpriced vintage selections, and not a whole lot going on. It was lackluster. If I could rate based on their jewelry alone, I'd give it a 4. I love finding vintage, classy and out-of-the-ordinary pieces in their case up front. Their bags are pretty great, too. But the clothes? My friends and I stopped by in search of a cute dress for a bachelorette dinner the next night. It's a fun store, full of wigs and accessories and clothes. The store is has some really cute clothes and it's hit or miss on the fit. Sadly, everything I tried didn't fit me but I do love some of the accessories they have. Their sales associates were not the most helpful. There wasn't a greeting or anything. Four girls standing in the middle of the store gossiping while we were browsing. Wait, no monkeys?? This was my reaction when I walked in. A very friendly man I met at the Brothers III lounge told me this was the #1 place for domestic monkey steaks. He said "if I ever buy monkey anywhere else, may Floyd Jeebus light my arse on fire." Of course, this gentleman also addressed me as "Sarah Palin" and referred to his shoes as "mars boots," but I've seen weirder stuff whilst ripped on bath salts. Anyway, Mafalda and I decided to check out Funky Monkey, even after our hopes for fresh monkey were dashed like so many worthless dingleberries in the great taint of fate. We walk in, and our senses are immediately assaulted by the melange of colors and an overriding smell of patchouli. Mafalda promptly ralphed, which is extremely problematic due to her diet - a ghastly pastiche of pure grain alcohol, the burnt catfood from Squeal BBQ, and bath salts. Well, when Mafalda's barf started eating through the ecclectic floor coverings, we had to make a hasty exit. Funky Monkey gets 5 stars from Smoky B because, even though they didn't have fresh monkey, they were very forgiving of Mafalda's upchuck. read more

I think the Funky Monkey is great! The employees are very friendly and the clothing and accessories are so cute! They have a lot of vintage items, and compared to a lot of shops on Magazine street, the prices are very reasonable. I once bought a pair of vintage Revo sunglasses from the 80's at a great price. They are my favorite pair of sunglasses. I get complimented all the time on them, and a few of my friends remembered their older siblings wearing them when we were young! read more

Stopped into funky monkey during my trip up and down Magazine Street. I didn't really experience any of the bad customer service that people have left reviews about, but I was kind of underwhelmed by their selection. A lot of the men's clothing wasn't actually vintage , it was just newer re-prints of band tees and also some of the designs that they print in-house (which are pretty cool). I think they should up their picking efforts to find more true vintage to stock the shelves . This is still a cool spot to check out if you're around Magazine Street. read more

Great place if you are looking for a place for vintage clothes and random costumes and outfits. It has the most random stuff there, different styles of shoes, dresses, accessories, etc. This is basically a great place for you to exchange any unique outfits or clothes you have or some good basic vintage accessories. The only problem is that yes it is kind of cluttered and there are a lot of random clothes everywhere, but lately I noticed they have organized their clothes better and the place expanded a bit. Also a bit of a downside, for a thrift store and for vintage items, the clothes are tad bit overpriced. A bit too much for not so great quality on most of these items. read more

The garments are organized by style and color not by size which takes a little longer, but ... No worries I love shopping. Most of it is vintage there were a number of brand newitems with tags, but everything else in great/new condition. I bought a slip dress for $42 and a long black satin DVF dress for $68, love both dresses !!!! Great finds & prices!!!! The store had a pleasant vibe and my friend and me had fun shopping there. The store assistants are very friendly and helpful and I would definitely go back there and recommend it to everyone who likes funky little inexpensive boutiques which are well cared for and have a fast turnover over of garments and accessories.
