This funicular railway dates back to 1898 and carries passengers from Montecatini Terme up the hill to Montecatini Alto above, but is worth doing as an experience in itself, not jsut as a short cut upwards. The little red 'carriages' are the original (or at least look like it) with wooden benches to sit on inside or try to get an open one at the front or back, facing for a better view-if you are brave enough! The two carriages pass each other on parrallel 'tracks' at the half way point. The views as you travel are excellent and the old town of Montecatini Alto up the top makes a good place to stroll, with some panormic views, for a few hours before returning to the contrast of the grand spa buildings of the Terme below. read more
