I am a review obsessed person by nature, and rarely eat at any restaurant, go to any attraction, or stay at any hotel without doing extensive research about the reviews beforehand. Back to our conundrum, since I vetted the reviews, but not the location I quickly realized my mistake of booking a hotel so far away once we arrived at the train station in Florence. There were assistants at the train station, who I assume were lifelong Florencians, and they hadn't the slightest clue how best to travel to the hotel's location. We ended up taking a train to the Il Neto station and then became stuck with no bus to take us the rest of the way. We were hopeless and might as well have been in the middle of wilderness since we were no longer tourists in places catering to them in leaps and bounds, but instead strangers in a very foreign land. I called the hotel for advice and the front desk agent advised us to call a taxi, however with the time of night and the distance between us and Florence I thought that there were minute chances of a taxi showing up. Enter Lawrence: we were walking blindly down the street in the dark in Il Neto hoping to come across a store where we could ask for advice, and lo and behold someone gets out of a black SUV and asks us if we are going to the Merdiana Country Hotel. The look on my face turned almost immediately from sheer shock to absolute joy, we were saved! The consummate gentleman Lawrence drove over an hour round-trip to get us. He refused my gas money and only wished us a pleasant stay with him, and pleasant stay we had indeed. Service excellence is Loris' most important competitive advantage and is his distinguishing edge. His ethos is built on the Golden Rule, of treating others as you would like to be treated. With this simple yet powerful credo, Lawrence was been able to turn moments of desperation, such as ours, into a memorable and happy stay. Not to mention a resort stay with beautifully appointed rooms and one of the best breakfasts offered by a hotel during my stay in Italy. The Dinners were scrumptious and perfectly prepared and no one passed up on dessert. A true indulgence in every sense. Also it's very close to the Circuit de Mugello which was the reason we initially booked here. What a great place to relax after a day at the track!

my rating is PURELY on customer service. my friends and I had a terrible and very unsafe situation…read morehappen and we needed somewhere safe to use WiFi and figure out what to do next. the front desk man, who spoke little English, did the absolute MOST to help us out. researched train schedules, offered the WiFi password, and even let us sit in the waiting room to calm down and figure out our next plan of action. we even heard him learning a few phrases in English to help better assist us. this man genuinely saved me and my friends lives that night for who knows what would've happened if he had turned us away. amazing service. If we had needed a place to stay for overnight, I would've picked this place in a heartbeat because of this fantastic gentleman.

The place is unique you would find few hotels that authentic anywhere in the world! Of course if you like only recent hotels with all the modern comfort this might not be the place you would look for, the furniture are quite old, there is no elevator so you have to go up a very steep stair etc... but if you like old places this is for you! Breakfast is included and is pretty good (continental buffet with italian cornetti and espresso) Only issue is that if you're actually touring Florence this hotel is pretty far away (25min by car). When we got to our room, we loved the view overlooking the street, just one block from the Florence Cathedral. The room was very comfortable, especially after arriving in the rain. As we explored the city, we spoke with Noemi at check-in and asked about the spa services they offered. She was a good listener and helped decide on a package. We looked through the brochure, and she recommended booking in advance to ensure availability. We decided on the €295 couples package, which included a couples massage 30 min/each. The private spa would be booked for two hours total. We booked it for the following day, and she informed us that cancellations were not allowed within 24 hours. Not only was the hotel stay excellent and the service top-tier, but the spa experience was on another level of luxury. We were escorted to a private spa area that included a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, bathroom, shower, robe and slippers. The massage therapists each gave us a relaxing 30-minute massage. Snacks, berries, and wine were also included. We chose to have them delivered to our room afterwards but you can have it during your spa allotted time. I must say, for any special occasion, this experience is absolutely worth it! Besides the comfortable room and friendly staff, the spa treatment was hands down the highlight of our stay. I can say with certainty that when I return to Florence, I wouldn't be able to stay anywhere else.

Steam shower and sauna were great to rejuvenate after 8 miles of walking in Florence. We will be back again.
