We came here for the first time on Wednesday for a date night and it was a blast! We were both…read morenovices so we were a bit worried it was going to be frustrating not ever hitting the target but luckily we were wrong. The guy who checked us in was amazing! After the safety spiel, he spent the time helping us find our marks so that we would hit the board every time.....and it worked! I walked away feeling like a bad ass and looking forward to the next date night. They have a kitchen and bar too, which is pretty cool. The fries were well seasoned and the beer was cold, what more could you ask for? The set up of the lanes is pretty cool and overall this is just a great spot. HIGHLY recommend coming here!

The organized activities were a great addition, fostering a sense of community and giving families opportunities to connect. The environment itself was thoughtfully designed--the layout, noise level, and colors felt welcoming without being overstimulating like some other places we've visited. Another detail I appreciated was how organized everything was. Announcing when each session was ending and having a clock clearly displayed helped everyone stay on schedule and made transitions smooth. This group of talented people had an newbie orientation and Roller derby being something on my "must do" list, I gave it a shot. I knew very little about the sport and my skating skills are rusty at best but they are motivating and helpful. Once I was a part of the league I was invited to great fundraising events and practices they have at various locations. They pitch in with helping the community and are starting up a youth team. I am smitten by the roller derby world and you will too.

Last year they had some…read morekind of problem with the irrigation system and lost a lot of grass (we had like zero precipitation last year, so it was not good). A year later and you would not know it. City guys did an outstanding job of getting this excellent course back in shape. Hat tip to the city workers at all of Albuquerque's muni courses. Some of the guys at Arroyo have been there many years and they care about that course. One practice green for chipping (with a bunker) and two for putting. Pretty good driving range, but in the winter don't expect a lot of good grass. You will have various "lies" on this course. More slope in the fairways than most courses in Albuquerque. A down hill putt away from the mountain? Be careful, that's going to be a fast putt! Normally they will have a beverage cart out every day. Tip them well! Cafe has better than average food for sure. Tip them well too! Everybody is friendly and many of the staff members are long time employees, which in my mind indicates a good work environment, which results in good friendly service. The City's Point-of-Sale system slows everything down during check-in, but that's true at all four muni courses. A pretty scenic course considering it's in the middle of the city. The Sandia mountains can present several different "looks" depending on cloud drape, crisp air, or even dusted in snow (yes, in Albuquerque you can play golf in a light jacket one day, and go skiing the next day). On a sunny day with really clear air, the Sandias look like they are 100 yards away - beautiful. Water buckets on number 1 and 10 would be a nice touch. Also seems they don't have the best sand in the bunkers. The sand they use has a lot of tiny rock chips, which will splash up on the greens. Last time out there were no flags on the practice green, so if you hole two or three balls, you've got to fish them out, rather than just pulling them out with the flag. Minor, but it's a nice touch and Arroyo is pretty much the only course that doesn't provide flags. All in all, an excellent value and a fun layout. Highly recommend.

Watching kids splash and squeal under these souped-up shower heads reminds me of the photos I've…read moreseen of kids in NY boroughs, dancing in the spray of a wrenched hydrant, in the midst of a hot, humid summer day. I did grow up with humidity but we kids didn't have to rely on fire hydrants, I could go swimmin' in many of the 10,000 lakes. Anyway, when I'd see those pictures, I always wondered why the kids looked like they were having so much dang fun. It's just a fire hydrant on blacktop, for God's sake. Now I get it. Now that my kiddo loves it, I get it. Spray parks are totally carefree, mom and dad don't need to do much monitoring, and they're a way to simultaneously stay hot and cool, as opposed to the cool down/warm up routine of a pool. This is a terrific spray park with capacity for easily 40 or 50 kids, I'd guess, and it's a terrific way low-cost alternative venue for birthday parties. Lifeguards around here seem to have just one responsibility: (blows whistle) "No running!" Tough job, guys.

However, the fee was only a few dollars (3) for my 1 and 3 year old and there are friendly lifeguards on duty. There are two restrooms and two shower stalls. I'd suggest wearing your suit to the park. There isn't really a great place to change. The building is older and looks a bit run down. You are able to bring in snacks and /or a cooler. The spray park is on a small slab of concrete. There are 6 water features and about a dozen covered picnic tables around the perimeter. I really enjoyed this enclosed park. It was small enough to watch my daughters splash and splash from my shaded seat. I like splash parks because they are more relaxing than taking little kids to the pool (less worry) and the kiddos have just as much fun. My family will definitely make this a regular activity. Behind the splash pad is a park with a full basketball park, baseball field and what looks like a petting zoo (?) that you can see from behind the fence. There are painted murals as well.

Driver should not be needed here. Although the starter told me "no cart paths exist so just keep off the greens", but I was approached by the golf course Marshall around the 5th hole telling me I was getting too close to the greens in my cart - I was a good 30 feet away from the closest green! Anyway, he said I needed to be at least 30 yards from the green. Really dude? Anyway, I might have given the course a 5-star review if not for that discussion. Greens aren't the best, they could be worse. The rest of the course is very nicely maintained.

Obviously thinking back whether or not you got your money's worth can frustrate the best of us, but I believe it crosses just about everyone's mind despite the tax bracket we fall in. So, if value is a concern, then muni courses obviously serve a great purpose, don't they? Especially if you're a beginner, the last thing you want to do is drop serious dough at a high end course when you're barely able to get that little white demon ball straight down the fairway. Look, with the exception of some, I'd venture to write even the vast majority of professional golfers paid their dues at various muni courses across the country. They're there for a reason, and I'm certainly glad they are. My daughter, wife and I (all beginners) played the executive par 3 9-hole and had a frustratingly great time! Relatively cheap, flat and straight. We walked it for the extra exercise aspect, and really enjoyed our day. If you're also a beginner, consider playing best ball like we did to help things move along a little faster. Whether just hitting some balls on the driving range, or actually playing, I know we'll be back plenty. And you might want to go burn a few calories too. Cheers!
