This joke shop is located right beside the Gaiety Theatre. Halloween gone the line was wrapped all the way down the street, I should know I was in the queue with my little sister. She was on a mission to get a specific wig for her Donny Darko outfit and I was there to hold her place when bathroom breaks were necessary. The Halloween rush aside, this is a quirky shop with a lot of novelty items to have fun with. It's really tiny in the store, so you can imagine when it's busy it's anxiety inducing. Try to shop ahead coming up to the costume times of year. I really like this place, pity it's not bigger though.

It's hen party time and I need some tack. So of course the Joke Shop is the place to go. I remember coming in here on the annual trip up to Dublin before the Christmas panto in the Gaeity to get jumping beans and pretend cigarettes, invisible ink and whoopee cushions. Oh the good old days! Today I was looking for a different type of joke though. I was glad to see they've moved things around, it's always chaos in here, so they've made things a little more accessible which is a bonus. I picked up a hen handbag (basically a supply kit for a hen night) and a few other bits that will get a giggle over the weekend. They still do have all the old usual jokes and of course a huge variety of fancy dress costumes and wigs. It's an oldie but a goodie.

Review Highlights - Fun Place

As in, there were some wigs that cost €30-€40 which is a lot if it's going to be used as joke wigs.

The tiny shop is filled with wooden African masks and small jewellery boxes. Prices are cheap because the merchandise is not top quality. One thing worth mentioning about this place is the strange outfit worn by the mannequin in the doorway. The outfit looks like a skimpier version of the Princess Leia bikini. The two piece set comes in a translucent white with sequins sown on top. Matching long white gloves are also thrown into the mix. The saleswoman was very kind to explain to me that it was handmade. However, I couldn't figure where it came from, let alone where a woman might wear such a revealing costume. It honestly looked like something from another planet. I would keep my eye on this shop for future original merchandise.

They have a huge selection of incense if you're into that sort of thing. I am, but my boyfriend is not so it has been vetoed in our house. They also sell some pretty cute little wooden boxes, some mediocre fashion purses, and other various useless stuff but as someone else mentioned they're not the highest quality. Some of the merchandise can be a little odd, considering this is downtown Dublin - wood statuettes and replica tribal masks? - but it's not horrible. At least it's not plastic! However, if you were thinking about giving any of these items as a gift, I would suggest you think again. That is, unless you want the recipient to finally realize just how little you care for them.

They're stocking the fine-tip oil brushes and boxed pastel sets that would give any weekend artist a case of the vapours. But... does it have to be so hidden? I mean, how will people know that they can get sets of jelly jewels for their windows, quill and in sets, pipe cleaner animal kits and more if this place is so set back from the rest of the shopping area on this sizable centre's second floor... Could it switch spots with that Bershbear&M clothing shop a few doors down? It's not like that place is revolutionising fashion anyway. Maybe? No? Sigh. I'll just have to keep going myself to keep them in business.

Rather, it's a place to come if you're looking for fun, artsy activities. Whenever I visit home, my sister and I like to do random fun activities on lazy afternoons, often scooting over to the local art store to buy paint by numbers or stained glass kits. Yes I know that these items are primarily aimed at children, and yes I know that I am 25 years old. But are you aware how challenging some of those huge paint by numbers are? When you're done, you feel straight up ACCOMPLISHED. Anyway, Art & Hobby is basically a store filled to the brim with this kind of stuff. It's an awesome place for parents or babysitters to get some fun, creative and cool projects for their kids to spend rainy days with. From the ubiquitous paint by numbers to more elaborate model kits, this place has everything. They sell tons of school supplies, once again making it perfect for kids, and all sorts of pens, stationary, gifts and decorations. They also currently have Halloween decorations, projects and costumes.

I'm seriously shocked this place hasn't been reviewed already! I went here this weekend with a…read morefriend who has started the epic task of finding her wedding dress. Dirty Fabulous has been mentioned a few times as a place to find good vintage clothing, particularly dresses. It's upstarts in one of the georgian buildings on Baggot street, so it's a bit off the beaten track, and I suspect you have to have an appointment - well for wedding dresses you certainly do. We were taken into a room with beautiful things that girls love, but what surprised me was the range of dresses was quite small. The nature of vintage being what it is means that you do have to be lucky to be in the room at the same time as the dress you want. However I found the staff great, they do realise the nature of the search and offer to keep your details and to let you know if anything that you would like does come in. And the dresses are beautiful. You can see these really beautiful different styles from various decades - 50s, 20s, 60s etc. There's also beautiful vintage jewelry and accessories. So if you're a vintage style lover this is definitely a place for you. I do have to say that the staff here really stood out. We had a few appointments that same day and no-one gave us advice anything like the lady in Dirty Fabulous. I think my friend was very tired of mediocre dresses at this point, and she picked her up by telling her not to mind any nonsense people tell her in shops about deadlines. She gave her great advice about trying things on even if they were in the wrong colour or shape to get a better idea of what works and what doesn't. She gave us cards of other shops which might stock dresses that she might also like. She organised us bridesmaids, who were flailing about uselessly, by designating a note-taker and talking about mailing lists. And all of it was done in a gentle, understanding way which made us all warm to her, and agree we would certainly recommend the place. She said to us as we were leaving "always remember to eat between every appointment and have a glass of wine with lunch".... after a footsore day with a disappointed bride-to-be the importance of this advice really stands out in my mind!

I had clearly stated when I booked that I was looking for wedding accessories and jewellery, but as soon as she established I already had my dress she seemed annoyed I was there. When showing me selections of accessories she pushed hard to sell regardless of whether I seemed interested or comfortable which was dissimilar to most of the bridal appointments I had experienced. I'd be wary of going back again.
