This has to be one of the longest standing, un-changed toy shops around. I remember it from being a whippersnapper, as I'm sure most Dubliners do. Banba Toymaster, and to a lesser extent Millets Camping shop, really gave this corner of the city centre definition to me as a child. I couldn't of told you what the street was called, or what the post code was, but if you told me it was the big red toy shop area you were after I could've drawn you a map.
The shop is pretty big inside and has the full smorgasbord of molded plastic delights. They've got your Yu-Gi-Oh, your Pokemon, your new not-fun Transformers, your new not-fun Turtles and all that other soulless junk that proves my generation had better taste than these pesky-kids-get-off-my-lawn-don't-touch-that-turn-that-down-do-your-homework-get-up-you're-late-eat-your-sprouts-go-to-your-room-my-back-hurts-Britney-who?
Actually, I kinda love Pokemon, and I recently endulged some nostalgia here by getting a Tamagotchi. I gotta say, that they're acutely annoying and intensely frustrating little blighters. The thing demands attention pretty much all day, I don't know how children can take it, I really don't. We were amazing at caring for these things as kids, right? I think it may mean that my five year old self would probably make a better, less selfish parent than my current self. I blame all those intervening, self indulgent teenage years. read more
