Pride and Joy is of a type of shop that was once very common in Ireland that is now passing (at…read moreleast in Dublin, at any rate). Located on the first floor of the Donaghmede Shopping Centre, Pride and Joy in one those toy shops that specialise in cheap unfashionable toys that would probably be sneered at by the children of today, but would be considered to have great kitsch value by nostalgic twenteens. You know the type of shitty toys that you got as kid: plastic bow and arrows, toy guns that light up and make a noise, non-brand name dolls that would be looked down upon by the recipient for not being a Baby-Born. Very un-PC, guns for little boys and dollies for little girls, isn't it? That's what makes this shop so charming: the absolute sense of being stuck in a time warp the moment you enter the store. The most modern item I saw in the window was a micro-scooter (at least 10 years since those were en vouge), which next to a display of Power Rangers (surely they haven't been made in years). Absolutely worth a visit.

I love bringing the kids here as they still stock a big range of pocket money toys and have a great range of arts and crafts. They also do all the trading cards, puffles and club penguin. So it does'nt cost to much when we visit. Staff are great Well done

Now I know you are gong to say "Of course Q, its a toy shop, what do you expect?" and its a fair point, but this place is different - all of the toys have an educational slant and for once his doesn't mean the place is the equivalent of a stalk of broccoli to a child, the stock is well chosen and fun, and appealing to the ankle biters! They also have a whole range of art and craft supplies for those rainy days; stickers, card, glitter, glue, glittery glue etc etc etc. I know you'll really want to know so I'll tell you, after my son had recovered his power of speech we decided on a cow as a suitable memento from our visit, he was still clutching it as he went to bed this eve!

What a cool little shop! i love just going in here and having a look at everything and wishing i…read morewas a kid just so that i can justify buying everything in the shop. This place has the types of toys that you want your kids to play with, no play stations and Wiis or other electronic stuff it has total back to basics kind of things. these are the kind of toys that the kid who plays with the box instead of what was in the box needs, they don't need fancy pants complicated stuff they need a trip to nimble fingers.its like the shop is teeming with innocence. The art supplies in the shop are top quality too, anything you need in the way of arts and crafts can be found in here. I also love how this is a family run independent store, its not a greedy chain looking for a fast buck, it seems that the shop people in here genuinely care about what they do

Yes its a bit of a…read morewarehouse and I really have no idea why it looks like they alphabetised by they haven't... that just makes it more confusing. Essentially because there's so much stuff there you have to accept that you'll go for a wander to find the thing you need. Currently lego is right by the door, then its boys stuff, girls stuff, baby stuff and bigger things like bikes down the end (also computer games down the end if you want to by a treat for yourself while you're there!). On my latest visit I felt a bit bewildered on entering, but I still came out with the right toys that were needed... and also a jigsw for me that it could be argued that I did not need. Anyway I'm not sure if its the lack of little people that I need to buy toys for but I usually find myself pleasantly surprised with the prices at smyths. As a special bonus this particular store opens really late at Christmas - until 11pm I think, so if you need to buy toys but can't cope with children around its a godsend!

As a youth in the west of Ireland, Smyths was my El Dorado. Smyths toy stores were dotted around…read morethe country. (From a kid's perspective) the buildings were towering goliaths filled from floor to ceiling with toys, books, games and bikes. I thought every adult had to be an idiot for not wanting to work here. I now cannot think of a worse place to work. Screaming toddlers runing around in danger of scraping knees and bumping foreheads while mothers argue with their mothers about who's buying their little precious a Ben 10 wristwatch. That being said, Smyths is still one of the best toy shops in the country. They have an enormous amount of stock and their customer service is great. Not only that, they also have a 'software zone' which is pretty good for computer games and consoles. I do sometimes go into the Smyths back home for a bit of a nostalgic time wasting. Just not at Christmas. NEVER at Christmas.
