I posted on Craiglist that I'm looking for used or new Halloween props mask and costumes. A woman emailed me telling me this place is going out of business and I should stop in to talk to the owner. It took me 45 minutes to get there and after looking around they have a lot of old costumes a few masks and props I was told to make a pile of the things I wanted. Most of the latex items were dry rotted. The woman was very helpful and such a sweetheart !! The owner is still trying to sell this stuff as new. Yes I did buy a few things but the price he gave me was not much better then anywhere else. The stuff was NOT worth what I paid. Plus I didn't get a great bulk discount. read more

We arrive at 3:40pm to find handwritten note on door they closed at 3pm(see note upper right). We drove all the way from Hoboken. The people there are so rude it's not even worth inquiring about anything that they have for sale or rental. To all the employees get over yourself, you work in a Halloween store hahaha just because you didn't try hard enough in life doesn't give you the right to be a complete jerk to everyone. Fun Ghoul is a Rutherford staple. This type of costume shop is a treasure and dying breed. I've been coming here since I was a kid and haven't ever been let down. This place is so much more inspiring than those 'out of the bag' wannabe costume shops. There hasn't been one Halloween season that I haven't needed and found something at Fun Ghoul. I went to this store to inquire about having a costume made for Comic Con. The employees there were very helpful and took down all of my measurements. I was then told to email photos of the costume I wanted to be made to their email address. I never received a reply from them weeks after visiting the store. I didn't even get any sort of acknowledgement that they got my email with the photos. This is why I am giving a one star review. I have since then found my costume from someone else. I walk in and there's some pirate dude talking to a five year old about magical familiars. All the costumes in the store come to life and start talking to you immediately upon entrance. They break into song and dance and scream in your face when they are bored. Please be nice to them. Please. They've been hanging on shelves their whole lives. I know how that feels. My father left me at an early age. My only escape from this prison I call life is a pair of sexy bites vampire mini fangs. The employees where just dandy and showed me how to properly slip into a bear suit. It made me feel less imprisoned and wronged for two average minutes. I called the establishment to ask about a costume and from the start the employees were very rude. The one who transferred me to the costume department talked to me like I was an idiot. The woman who picked up from the costume department was extremely rude and would cut me off every time I tried to talk. She accused me of lying, believing that I had previously called when in fact that was the first, and last, time I had ever called. When I told her she was being very rude, she immediately put me on hold without explanation. When she came back on I asked for her name so I could talk to the manager, she very rudely told me that she never gives her name to anyone and put me on hold again. I hung up because I could tell I would get nowhere with her. I usually do not like to complain but this was very very rude and hostile. Perhaps the staff needs better training in customer service, but I will not be doing business in that establishment and I will recommend to others that they stay away based solely on the horrid customer service. Since October is just around the corner, it's time to start thinking about costumes for Halloween. Fun Ghoul in Rutherford is THE BEST place to go for your costume needs. The difference is that the people that work there really help you out with trying to figure out what the hell to be on this wonderful holiday. I always go in with an open mind and ask their suggestions. They have costumes, masks, accesories and make-up. My best costumes have always been with make-up. I'm usually very tentative about make-up but the people that work at Fun Ghoul (love the name) show you how to put it on like a pro. They're excellent!! As an example, my wife and I went to a Halloween Party dressed an Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. It was a costume with make-up which the folks at Fun Ghoul showed me how to apply.At the party, I said hello to a friend I have known for years and he had no clue as to who we were. That just blew my mind. Again, Fun Ghoul (Rutherford) is THE BEST place to get your idea's for a great Halloween costume. read more

Incredibly helpful service and great atmosphere. Never felt pressured to buy anything-which is always a nice change from other small shops. I got all my makeup (was even able to mix and match them right there in the store) and received great advice for tackling other aspects of my costume. read more

communication among the work staff is not very good. I had a makeup appointment scheduled for a party I was attending. The party was postponed to the following week, I called 2 days before my appointment to explain the situation and the woman who answered took down all the information and I was told no problem that they could do my makeup the following week at the same time. I called a day before I was supposed to have an appointment and nothing was recorded or communicated that I called the week before. I was marked as a no show and am out of luck and a $40 deposit I put down for this appointment. I will never go here again. read more

I've made many theatrical make up purchases here for over a decade. I can't say that is often--but this store is a rare gem. Having moved closer to Rutherford, I realize this place is an institution par excellence and part of the local flavor. The prices are reasonable and the selection is good (from what I've needed it for--I've never rented a costume, bought or rented props, or come here for any major industrial type special effects or molding/casting supplies--more for my just a hobbyist's interest, theater arts minor, and avid lover of the art of theatrical make up ala Dick Smith or Tom Savini). The staff is always helpful and can make recommendations and give instruction, as they are very familiar with their product. Recently, I made two purchases--one for a hat (for myself) and one for a wig (for my girlfriend). I found that the quality of these particular items they offered far surpassed online mail order sites and also cost much less, to boot. Opened late on Thursdays, which is when I usually make it out when I am in need of supplies. What is normally a quiet shop which caters to a niche market year round becomes extremely busy as it nears Halloween, for obvious reasons. read more
