if you're a white person, you'll probably have a better experience here than any poc. visited here recently after having them on my radar for awhile, and the it was a unique experience, love the concept, but customer experience wasn't the best. i came in first to an empty store and i was the only customer, then shortly after, a white couple came in. i felt like the shop keeper immediately stopped helping me and diverted all her attention to the couple, mainly focusing on them. she helped them until they had made a purchase and left the store until she went back to helping me (which took awhile, and i felt very neglected). i left with some samples but they're the vial kind without the ability to spray. maybe i should've asked, but i wish they could have warned me before i paid for them. now that i have them, i can't twist the caps off. also reading reviews about how some people received free samples on their first visit but i didn't rubs me the wrong way. possible discrimination maybe? when i called the store to ask if i can bring the vials back and have them help me transfer to a couple atomizers i have at home, they said no. not the best interaction so far. now i have 4 samples i paid for at $6/$8 each that i can't even use. marie-marie downtown gives spray samples and i've always been treated fairly there. read more

What a fun local gem. I got into fragrance this year, and was excited to visit this east side shop to explore and understand scents more and possibly try out some samples I could use toward a full bottle purchase. I will say I had a mixed experience here, but especially for small businesses, try to default to trust especially during an initial visit for the negatives. That said, if I return I will update my review. For this initial visit, I enjoyed: -The small space mostly to myself, with a somewhat friendly attendant helping me. -I didn't feel rushed, or pressured to buy anything. -Opportunity to go wide into specific notes and scents I was curious about. -2ml decant pricing felt fair for local shops such as Imaginary Authors. As a new customer I did get a free 1ML sample from the 8 samples I ended up buying which was a nice thank you. What I didn't enjoy: -Size vs smells. The space size quickly became overwhelming to my nose. I had to go in and out of the shop to actually smell the perfumes instead of a mish-mash of all the scents that had been sprayed and were overflowing from the boxes. -Service knowledge/depth. While the attendant was friendly, they were not really helpful but I don't know if this was an individual or an institution problem. I walked in looking to expand my horizons for something darker, creamier, loud, yet not linear. I was given about 4 bottles to smell and compare and we did rule some out, but the selection wasn't really mind blowing, as all the scents and houses were mostly well known and not *super* niche or unique. -Pricing for a small shop makes sense to not be competitive, but I was hoping for better pricing than direct to consumer from the houses websites. There was not much incentive to buy here for me compared to online which is an unfortunate byproduct of modern e-commerce so again I know the shop also has their own margins to compete with, and likely when buying smaller volumes, it's harder too, so I do empathize. But maybe there is a world where if you return within xx amount of time you get xx amount off or similar? -Talking detailed perfume composition was challenging with the attendant. I was asking about concentrations, formulations and maceration processes from these houses and it seemed like those types of questions were disregarded. -Again more of a institution comment than the individual but tipping culture in the US is a bit wild. I did spend about 30 minutes with the attendant so at check out I tipped them, but I can't say I felt great about it. It would be great to see this removed and just pay the employees a fair wage but I know that goes into the total bottle costs too. SUMMARY: Overall I think several of the negatives from my initial experience showcased the challenges of why I suspect small niche shops like this (unless also producing their own lines) probably struggle to compete in the mass markets of perfume. This is a great place to come if you already have specific *somewhat-niche* bottles and scents you want to smell and buy decants of, but keeping the list short, and brief, so your nose doesn't get overwhelmed, and likely not expecting a detailed amount of information from the attendants will keep the experience positive. read more

I'm a consummate perfume lover and I was so excited to visit this store in Portland. It's expected that a niche perfumery not only offers very exclusive and special fragrances but that along with that, the person behind the counter knows and understands what makes up each fragrance. Every individual has very different preferences and it is most crucial that whoever is attempting to sell a bottle or two knows more than to just pull out bottles somewhat randomly. When I mentioned that I was looking for a perfume whose name escaped me but I named the house and described the notes, I was met with the surprising response, "Oh, I don't know notes" That's akin to claiming to be a concert pianist and... You get the picture!! When back in town I will return and hopefully someone with a passionate vocation for perfume will greet me, not someone who is just a salesperson. read more

My niece and I went there thinking it was a place where essential oils and other pure sources of scent would be mixed into something personalized to our individual tastes. Instead, it's just a vast collection of existing fragrances. The interior space is too small for the purpose, and with 3 customers sampling scents on paper, it's soon overwhelming to one's olfactory senses. Adorable little scent bar with loads of niche & independent perfumes in stock. Good variety for such a small shop, and the manager who helped us was knowledgeable and friendly. Perfumes are behind the bar and we visited on a busy day, so things took a little longer than anticipated, but as long as you're not in a rush you should have a great time. They sell full bottles & can also do samples. The houses they carry tend to be on the pricier side, but they're also harder to find than your average scents. Wish they had more small sizes in stock, but I ended up taking a full size bottle of BDK Gris Charnel home because I was bewitched. read more

I've been here a few times and have had really enjoyed it. They have a great selection of perfume. However the last time I stopped by I had an awful experience with one of the staff members. I came in curious to try some scents from a house I am interested in, and the guy there was strangely aggressive and condescending to anything I said. When describing the sort of scent I was looking for, he snapped at me saying how what I was saying was useless since smell is subjective. (Obviously all sense perception is somewhat subjective, I'm just hoping you can try to interpret what I'm describing and point me to a fragrance I might like.) He was quite rude and patronizing to me the whole interaction, didn't say a word to me while ringing me up. It's a beautiful shop with wonderful perfumes but I don't plan on ever going back after that experience. read more

I've never really been into a "Parfumerie" before. If I have a need I buy fragrance from dept stores so this was a real experience and education in niche fragrances. I do know the difference between cologne, EDT and EDP's but the man managing the place, Michael, is a guy who knows this product inside and out, up and down and will gladly share with you for as long as you can listen. My daughter walked in, I waited outside for 15-20 before walking in and got caught up in Michael's and my kids enthusiasm also. There were eight bottles and scent strips in front of my daughter as Michael explained the products to her. There are a bunch of fragrances I have never heard of or seen on the shelves which makes sense and I did not see staples such as Versace, Prada, Channel, Tom Ford and such. We bought two bottles. A word to the un-educated...be prepared to pay more than you think or may have ever imagined, lol. It was worth it though! Stop in and talk with this fellow and you will walk out feeling better after this former musician bends your ear in a most friendly manner. read more

Super knowledgeable, not at all pretentious, and a super fun way to explore niche/independent perfumes! My partner and I came up to Portland for the weekend and stumbled upon this little shop. Michael helped us both find great scents for each of us. He was so friendly, helpful, and did such a great job of keeping up with the many people in the shop. It would have been way too overwhelming for me to juggle so much! He was just awesome! We each picked out one full size bottle and a smaller one for me, and he included quite a few samples for us to explore later. They also shipped them to our home, so we wouldn't have to deal with traveling back home with them. I don't think I could have had a better experience here. I was planning on visiting this store during my vacation to Portland, and I was not disappointed when I did. I'm a bit of a fragrance hobbyist, and I was made welcome here. Mike helped me to test out a ton of different things, with lots of insight and recommendations, and I was able to come away with a selection that was unlike any of the other things I have or have smelled before. I feel like I tested out half the fragrances in the store, which is quite a bit. And I was never treated like I was taking too much time or like I was having a sale forced on me. Have you ever been on a quest for something that you haven't been able to find for more than two decades? That's the way it's been with my search for a men's cologne that uses the herb rosemary. I just came out of Townshend's Tea and saw this place while walking to my car so I decided to stop in. So my long search for something similar to this cologne has led me to many perfumeries and many disappointments. But I have learned a lot about colognes and also have interacted with many different salespeople. The staff here are top notch. The staff here are not only professional but they are so knowledgeable and friendly as well. I had so many questions and they were not only able to answer them all but they actually knew the name of the old cologne I was asking about. I couldn't even remember it! That's how good they are here! I was able to try many different types of cologne that were in the vein of what I was looking for. Nothing exactly what I was looking for but they came pretty close with one. I'm from Seattle but whenever I'm in Portland I like to stop in here and check out what's new. I trust Tracy as my fragrance consultant more then my former and current financial advisor. However, she did not disappoint this time or never over the year I have known her. I needed a new "powerhouse" winter fragrance for my collection that was different then any other EDP or extract on the niche market. I explained I was interested in the boozy type of top note to add to my winter collection. She suggested Slumberhouse's Baque and sent samples of similar options. Tracy explained to me Slumberhouse was sending her one of the first boxes of the re-release limited-edition of Baque and promptly sent it via 2-3 day shipping at no charge. Niche is art and I would rather have service of consult from a trusted advisor and thought-leader like Tracy and her partner André than save a $30 - $50 online for something I could have missed out on. Quick kudos to Josh Meyer of Imaginary Author's continued success at Fumerie. I am probably the first person in Chicago and only at the moment to have Baque. I have worn it twice. I never concern myself or care if people like what I choose to wear. I wear what makes me feel like "I am at my best". We all need that in our life. This is Tracy's gift and providing I also sampled Slumberhouse's Kiste and will purchase hopefully in the store in spring. I NEVER buy two niche fragrances from the same line. However, through Tracy's remote service, consultation and customized approach I have no doubt she will be and is one of the nations top thought leaders on the art noted and treasured for years to come. Not to mention, Tracy and André are the most sincere, honest, devoted, creative and passionate people I have had the pleasure of doing remote purchases based off telephone consultations and Skype. They truly are sincere and care you are happy and achieve your goals as I described above.
