Juniper Black salve - for skin or lips. Ahhhh....
    Emily O.

As an out-of-towner, I cannot believe I have the honor of adding this business to Yelp! It's part apothecary, part chandlery, but the bulk of their expertise appears to be poured into their amazing soaps. Now a lot of people make soaps. I recently bought some from a friend who owns a goat farm in Tennessee. But the folks at Maak are like chemists who work only with essential oils and ingredients. Part of me felt like I was walking into a page from Jitterbug Perfume. Each product is carefully created. The owner herself was stirring a small batch of some type soap when we arrived and yet she was welcoming and friendly. She even knew where Minneapolis was (for some reason Portlandians seem to combine it with Indianapolis? Totally different). Anyway, she explained the difference between the smell that I liked (Virginia pine, I think) vs. some of the products containing oils and ingredients from other sources like local Alder. My husband was stoked to find an apparently rare type of soap made from tar? I have yet to try that but it smelled earthy and smoky. I opted for their signature salve (see pics) which had a nice oily consistency and tea tree and juniper berry smell. I'm very picky about lip balms and I love it on my lips and on the back of my hands. The only negative I would say is some of the candles were quite expensive although I'm sure well worth it. I think I am just "sour grapes" that I couldn't afford one of them right away. When you are on your way to Powell's, check it out!

    Incredible space.

This weekend the Portland Bazaar returned for its 9th year and as one would expect, it was crowded! But totally manageable. The space is bright and airy with lots of natural light. The variety of vendors and merchandise is impressive making it easy to find unique and meaningful gifts or something for yourself! There were several jewelry artists with unique and creative styles that I haven't seen elsewhere. I love jewelry and prefer to wear pieces that are individual and not mass produced. That's exactly what was showcased here. There were a few pottery vendors and my favorite, Pigeon Toe Ceramics, had a stunning display of serene, classic mid-century modern pieces. There was the normal coffee mugs and bowls, but what really stood out were the unique gravy pitchers, tiny creamers and soap trays. The colors were soft muted pastels and so soothing to the eye. I wanted everything on the table! Of course there were lots of alcoholic offerings and accompaniments: tea infused spirits by Townshend's Distillery; Portland Spirits was there with their amazing syrups, a much better alternative to soda and mixers (highly recommend the spicy ginger for killer Moscow Mules); pear infused vodka from Wild Roots, to name a few. And then there was Wild CBD, always the most crowded booth in this day of all things CBD. Les Tablettes de Chocolate had inventive bars loaded with fruits, nuts, herbs and spices in my favorite, dark chocolate. Their toffee was incredible. The presentation is beautiful and the taste superb. Baked goods were also available from several small batch bakers. One of the craftsman, Hew, had the most beautiful handcrafted bowls, containers, plates and utensils made from wood. So natural, simple - but hard to make - and incredibly gorgeous. They even had an area set up where kids could make hand painted ornaments, inspiring future crafters! Perusing the wares, marveling at the craftsmanship, selecting the perfect gifts and scoring spicy ginger syrup was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Definitely make a point to come next year! They always post on Facebook when they have a show. The merchandise is special and high quality.

I had not picked up a souvenir from my time in Portland, but had planned on doing some shopping later in the day once everything opened up. I live in and I am from Nashville and we love all things Dolly, so I made a note to come back by that afternoon before heading back to my hotel nearby. When I popped back by, I immediately walked over to the row of custom T-shirt designs on the back wall next to the counter. The employee who was working was really nice said hi to me and I noticed the Taylor Swift shirt they had on was also really cool. I was an easy sell for that one. I spent probably 30 minutes in the store looking at everything they had and trying to get an answer from my wife back home on which shirt she would like to have. There were a lot of other really unique items in the store as well. I bought some cool pins and a very lovely smelling perfume along with two shirts. This is an excellent store to bring back something unique from Portland and the service was very good.

To be honest, I believe I visited their shop more often than I went to the grocery store! I was so happy to finally be able to walk into the shop, sample a wide variety of fragrances, and carry out my purchase the same day! YES!! No more blind buys! Fumerie Parfumerie is a cozy, quintessential PNW perfume bar with a curated fragrance list that is best-in-class for niche and indie scents. They have become my go-to source for fragrance from lines like Naomi Goodsir, Tauer, Slumberhouse, Profumum Roma, Papillon, Imaginary Authors, Voyages Imaginaires, and Hima Jomo, just to name a few. You will be well taken care of by their scent-tenders - and they make everyone, from perfume newbies to seasoned collectors, feel at home. They are a best kept secret when it comes to mail order! Thank you, Fumerie Parfumerie for your great selection, your amazing website, fast and free shipping, and for carrying scents that everyone should get their nose on. I will definitely make time to visit you whenever I'm back in the Pacific Northwest and will be sending you my new wish list very shortly.
