The Hilbert Museum of California Art is the best museum in Orange County that you've never heard…read moreof. Even me, walking around recommending the place now, can barely remember its name. But still, since coming here for the first time only a couple of weeks ago I've recommended it multiple times. And now? Multiple + 1. Though you'll be asked, at entry, if you've made reservations, don't be daunted. Reservations are unnecessary and museum admittance is free of charge. Though the Hilbert had been on my radar earlier, I'd forgotten about it until noticing, at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts, that several artists had pieces acquired by the Hilbert, spurring me to visit. Housed in two separate buildings connected by a central plaza framed with an astounding Millard Sheets mosaic, the building you enter for check-in has a frequently changing (3 times annually) display. On this visit they featured the California Art Club's 115th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition. Outstanding in every respect, I couldn't help but notice how many artists were there touring the show and how many of the pieces were already sold. Yes, the works in this particular exhibit were for sale, much of it quite reasonably priced considering the astounding talent on display. The second building features exhibits from the Hilbert's permanent collection and there was nary a dud in this space either. In that this is a museum of California art, the collection includes a lot of Disney-adjacent artists but also, so much more. I particularly enjoyed the way they kept each of these exhibits relatively bite-sized, to enable a broad showing of their remarkable collection. Knowing that the Hilbert is free, excellent, and always mixing things up pretty much guarantees a return visit on every future trip to Southern California. If you like museums and are anywhere nearby this is a museum definitely worth making time for.

Near the back of the main entrance, there is a free rotating gallery currently showcasing the Travelers exhibition. As of 7/25/26, the main exhibition features mixed-media works by local artists. I really enjoyed the curation! It felt intentional and flowed well, with multiple pieces from the same artists displayed throughout the exhibit. I appreciated that the artists' labels included their Instagram handles which makes it a lot easy to discover and support their work beyond the museum! In addition to the main exhibition, there are a few smaller galleries. One is currently dedicated to Leo Fender inside the main gallery.

Parking is in front near the entrance, weekdays it's $4 /hr but free on the weekends. Admission is just a $5 suggested donation to support the arboretum. I arrived within the first half hour after opening to try and beat the heat. Even though it was still warm, there were plenty of shaded areas to stay cool along with benches that were great for relaxing. There was also a breeze so that helped. Thought about spending an hour there but glad I paid for two hours of parking because I ended up staying for 1 & 1/2 hours. One of my favorite moments were simply sitting on a bench listening to all the birds. Hopefully you can hear them on the video. This is a peaceful place to unwind and definitely encourage you to visit.

We spent a lot of time admiring a group of docile ducks and enjoying the shade by the water. They also have an online plant shop for those interested in gardening (with a great ongoing deal). Planning on purchasing from there and picking up so I have an excuse to stop by again. Loved my time here. Expect to enjoy yours too!

The downtown Fullerton art walk happens on the first Friday of every month. This happens all year round. It seems like the event was more popular maybe pre-covid? Not too sure. You can walk around downtown, and you will see signs put out for the businesses that are participating. It seems like the hours vary depending on the business. So, some were closed when we went. It may be a good idea to go during the day, so you can hit all of the places before they close. We got to see some art. It was cool. It's always fun exploring downtown Fullerton! Not bad for a free event. It's not something you have to run to go do. It was alright for what it is. A free event to do on a Friday, once a month lol

It was cool how everything was gathered in one place and there was a lot of festivities: photobooth, live music, food trucks, beer and wine garden, arts and crafts booth for kids, etc. The museum gift shop was also open to browse. Great atmosphere and nice to walk around, though I didn't really get involved too much with the booths. I was there mostly to browse and soak in the atmosphere. And to get grub from the food trucks, haha. The gathering was a lot smaller than I thought and I was expecting to see a lot more, but it's ok. I enjoyed the atmosphere. Parking was a breeze since they were set up right next to a couple of free public parking garages. All in all, the event provided some great atmosphere, but I'm not sure if a normal Artwalk would be for me. I suppose if I had nothing better to do on a Friday night and wanted to soak in some local art, I'd go again.

They've gathered props, costumes, and special effects pieces from different movies and shows, most particularly the Jurassic franchise, obviously. This year, unlike last, there was more going on outside with all the different tents dedicated to paleontology, local indigenous tribes, and environmentalism. They also had science presentations using liquid nitrogen. This year there were more cosplayers, and several Jurassic Park jeeps in the motor pool. Since they hold it in a place loaded with fossils, it sort of blurs the lines between cinema and reality. You get done looking at studio molds, animatronic dinosaurs, and Ray Harryhausen's claymation figures, and go look at Ice Age mammals, take pictures pretending to be eaten by a megalodon, and ask the resident scientists about the latest finds.

They do close at 4:00 PM, which feels a little early, but the museum isn't very large, so you can comfortably experience a lot in a couple of hours, which is exactly what we did. We stopped here to wait out the rain on our way to Knott's Berry Farm, and it ended up being a perfect pit stop. There are so many hands-on activities for kids. One highlight was the theater and tech area, where kids can explore sound and camera equipment, that was especially cool. Another favorite was the live bee exhibit, where kids can put on a little bee keeper costume and go inside to learn about bees up close. Such a fun and unique experience! Overall, this was a really enjoyable visit, and we would definitely come back. It's a great stop if you're heading to Knott's, and with the Museums for All pricing, it's incredibly affordable. Highly recommend!

The dinosaur by the entrance was one of our favorites--my nephew loved it so much and was excited the whole time. One of the best parts was the stage and dress-up theater section. It was so engaging for the kids! They got to play, pretend, and really use their imagination. It was fun watching them interact, perform, and just be themselves. I also liked how social it was for children. Kids were playing together, sharing, and exploring as a group, which made the experience even better. It's not just fun, but also a great place for kids to build confidence and connect with others. Overall, such a fun and memorable day. Definitely a great spot for families with kids! The area is sub-divided into sections that seem to try to create a little of everything -- there are spaces for gatherings, worship, paintings and a small gift shop. Food options are limited to just a couple of snack bars, which don't really compare to as much options like 99 Ranch. There is also offering to learn mahjong! One bright spot, though, is the wishing tree, which is a very welcoming and thoughtful touch. Too bad, the paper was out.
