Got this great tip from a friend. Go try Go-Mex…read more I really like Mexican food so was a great tip for me. Today was doing some shopping and the tip came to mind so off I went to give it a go. Very friendly service and willing to answer any questions you may have about the food. There is a large selection of dishes at really good prices. I bought the Gumbo and the Chilli Bowl dishes . You can eat there and then out of the trays but I took mine home so I could sit and enjoy them. So I have already eaten the Gumbo and yes it was really nice and tastey. and filling. You will have to wait for the update about the Chilli Bowl, but I just know it will be great too. So folks if you are on a visit to Chorley it's a must stop and eat. I will put the menu up in the photos as soon as I get to scan it. I have walked past this little stall at Chorley Market everyday for the past 2 years on my dinner…read moreand never thought to try it. How stupid am I?! I thought I'd treat myself today with it being Friday to something good and with the lack of other options I tried this place. I'm not usually one for little stalls as I think they're unhygienic; however this stall has a 5* hygiene rating so my worries were lifted! I got the big burrito which includes chorizo, chicken, mince meat and of course rice. All for £3.50 in a lightly heated wrap. The burrito had plenty of flavour and filled me up. Probably the best dinner I've had in the office all year! It smelt that good a colleague went and bought one too. Can't wait till next Friday now!!

I've been away from it as a permanent resident for almost 20 years, but whenever I go back I feel like I've never left. If that sounds too much like a cliche then tough I'm not apologising for it. The Victorian streets, the imposing townhouses, the gothic architecture and the lively atmosphere that fills every nook and cranny of this marvellous city I just can't get enough of it when I'm there. As with most large cities there is a generous helping of world cuisines on offer for you to chow down on pretty much 24/7? On my recent visit I wandered up Bold Street. A collection of bohemian shops, restaurants and bars it sits right in the centre of the city. With the bombed out church at the top, don't ask me what it's called because I haven't the faintest idea. And the busy main shopping area at the bottom. In between is where the chaos ensues. Students scurrying around looking for that all important student discount sign in every shop window trying to grab a bargain, businessmen rushing out of the railway station dashing for a cab trying ever so desperately not to spill that rancid over priced Starbucks down their cheap pin striped suits. And then there's the day dreamers. The wanderers who meander from one side of the street or the other, peering through the polished windows of desperate vendors vying for their hard earned cash. Amongst all this delightful madness is a plethora of eating establishments. Italian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Nepalese, Thai, Mexican and even French. Oh and of course not forgetting the vegans!! Theres even a place for them. I found myself walking into La Parilla. A Mexican restaurant situated on one of the street corners just up from the railway station. An eccentric looking place from the outside with a stereotypical Mexican bandit character playing a guitar in the doorway entertaining passers by and diners alike. As we walked in we where greeted with a friendly smile by a waiter who has asked if we'd booked. We hadn't! I do long for the day when I can walk into a restaurant ask for a table and they ask "have you booked?" And I reply "No don't you know how I am?" But anyway at the moment I'm a nobody so I have to be contented with either being told no and asked to leave or being put wherever they can't for me? Luckily on this night it was the latter. We where seated in the window at the front of the restaurant. The interior was charming if not a little tacky. But I honestly don't mind that. I don't really like restaurants to be prim and proper. I like the eccentric and shambolic style some exhibit. It gives character to a place and provides interesting talking points. Service was speedy our drinks order being taken strait away. Desperado beer and a gin and tonic! The menu is quite extensive and with a lot to choose from it was difficult to make a definitive choice. In the end I ordered a mini chicken filled tortilla wrap with salsa, guacamole and sour cream. It was very nice, presented well and tasted delicious. Not too heavy and not too greasy. The flavours burst through every mouthful. Fresh, vibrant and totally moorish it was a lovely starter. The salsa was freshly homemade none of that jarred Doritos watery puss they call salsa. For the main course I had one of my favourite Mexican dishes, the Chimichanga. It was basically, and I didn't realise at the time a large version of the starter. But this came with a delicious sauce topping and rice that really completes the dish. Crammed into the tortilla was chicken, peppers, onions, and garlic all swimming in a lovely creamy cheese sauce which was silky and smooth like liquid chocolate on a winters night it was divine. The actual size of the tortilla was colossal! But I tackled it with all the gusto I could muster and got through it. Every mouthful a delight, lip smackingly good it was a pleasure to eat. It was a meal well worth the struggle to get through. The waitress came over to see if all was ok. I refrained from firing a distress flat into the air and asking for a stomach pump, everything was splendid I replied. The main meal was over with. I had that feeling of elation and regret all at the same time. I swerved dessert because I was just too full. The bill came swiftly and we paid. But not without finishing those little minty chocolates they give you. There's always room for them. Although I did rather feel like Dawn French trying to cram in that last Brussel sprout! All in all this was a great visit and a great place to eat. It's fun, vibrant, entertaining and the food is incredibly good. I'd definitely recommend it and I shall definitely be returning the next time I am in the city.

The entire establishment was cleaner than any Mexican restaurant I've ever been in (which isn't necessarily a good thing). The food was below mediocre. It's a sad attempt at Tex-Mex. For £12 I expected a bit more than tinned food on top of bland tortilla (not the mention £5 for a modelo). Nothing on my plate tasted fresh, and from looking at the plates of my party, nothing else looked fresh either. The presentation was nice and the kitchen did what it could with the ingredients given. Again, the staff was great, the atmosphere was fantastic, the presentation was on point. The food just didn't taste nice. Mexican food is about freshness. You need to be able to taste where your food is from. Cilantro, peppers, local sourced vegetables and meats are of paramount importance. It wouldn't take much to fix these problems, but it was a shame to leave feeling as dissatisfied as I did.

So I ignored them and went anyway and I'm glad I did because it was a really delicious, good value meal with great friendly service. Rich and I shared the choriqueso and the guacamole bowl to start. The choriqueso as you may be able to guess is a ton of chorizo with a ton of melted cheese. Of course this was bloody delicious. The guacamole was good too, I'm not sure what was achieved by it being in a tortilla bowl but it definite didn't detract from anything. For mains I had tacos el pastor and Rich had fajitas with chicken and chorizo. The tacos were great - no weird hard shells here - and the filling very tasty. If I had any complaints here it would be that the meat had a slightly 'chalky' aftertaste, so possibly I'd try another taco filling on another visit. The hot sauce that comes with the tacos is pretty bloody hot, believe them when they say that. Rich's only complaint was that the fajitas came with a large amount of filling and only two small tortillas. To drink I had a bottle of Sol and a very good, very strong margarita. Rich had a pint of lager and a rum and coke. For two starters, two mains and four drinks we paid around £50 which I thought was pretty good. I'll definitely be back! I just hope it sticks around as businesses seem to come and go in this location (so go support them!).

A layer of lettuce sat on top with cream served with pico de gallo (Fresh Mexican salsa), and a spicy dipping sauce. The pulled pork was juicy and full of flavour, the outside was nice and crispy, and the spicy sauce was the perfect addition. I made a major foodie error, and ordered the Cochinita Pibil burrito for my main, which is basically an upsacle non-fried version of the Chimichangas - in my defence: PULLED PORK! The Cochinita Pibil was slow cooked pulled-pork marinated in oranges, lime and traditional Mayan flavouring, and was spot on! I HAVE NO REGRETS The restaurant is a quaint little place at the Chorlton end of Barlow Moor Road, with a large open window and terrace, which is great on a warm Summers' night like on the night I visited. The inside is filled with Mexican style décor, like an awesome painting depicted Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The price was very reasonable and service was great, friendly and attentive, and I will definitely return to sample the guacamole, and bigger variety of their dishes.

We weren't offered a second round of drinks until after we'd finished our food, and only got water with the bill. Weirdly at this point the server became super friendly - maybe she'd received some good news halfway through our meal, or was happy we were the last customers! Food-wise the cheese fondue and nachos with everything selection I don't think wowed anyone but were nice enough. My tacos were all fine although completely disintegrated once I added sauces. The carne asada was definitely more like braised meat than steak, but still tasted fine. The shrimp was again fine but unremarkable. Overall the taste couldn't compare to the fish tacos over at Fusion Lab. My taco dorado had the nicest filling (guacamole, chorizo) but it wasn't the best deep-fried taste - not sure whether that's just my preference or something about the oil but would give them the benefit of the doubt. The huitaloche enchilada wasn't that exciting in the end - basically a sort of mushroom flavour, I wouldn't go for it unless you lurve mushrooms. I think Yayo is right this would be good as a late night place for some snacks after drinking, however it seems to close by 11 even on Saturday so they might be missing a trick there. Overall I wouldn't say no to going back but nor would I suggest it.

I've been occasionally popping into the West Coast Rock Café on trips to Blackpool for years, to…read morethe degree that I could've sworn I'd already reviewed it, but on checking my previous reviews, I apparently haven't, which is something I will remedy right now! Everybody who knows Blackpool knows of West Coast Rock, and anyone who is a visitor and who doesn't, should make the effort to find out, because it's well worth hunting out its blink-and-you'll-miss-it tiny front entrance, which comprises of nothing but a door with a staircase leading upwards, and some bright yellow signage. It's near the tower. It bills itself as a family restaurant and music venue, but it is what in the USA would be known as a Dive Bar. That's not an insult in any way, it's their term for a place that is rough around the edges, casual, with a focus on good casual food and drinks, and usually live music. West Coast Rock Cafe is big on all of these, and their style inside is dark red walls and ceilings, painted wall art and illustrations, even illustrations on the tables, and old furniture. It works. It works really well for what they're doing. The service is casual and friendly, staff treat everyone like regulars and smiles are always in view. The menu is burgers, steaks, sandwiches, classic American favourites, and some Mexican options. All the burgers are named with tongue in cheek and a sense of humour, ie a plain hamburger is called "The Boring Burger", and the rest of the menu shares the same fun and casual style, as well as the same style illustrations from around the restaurant too. This time round we ordered a Double Decker Club Sandwich from the West Coast Favourites section, and a Hill Street Blues Burger. Waiting for your food here is perfectly pleasant too, because as well as the excellent music videos playing and music generally, the restaurant is on the first floor with wrap-around windows, making it great for people-watching over the pedestrianised streets. The food arrived pleasantly presented. The burger was juicy, with oozy blue cheese topping caramelised onions and mushrooms, which really kicked the flavour up a few notches. The club sandwich was surprisingly filling, and with the addition of cucumber in the mix, it really gave the sandwich a bit of bite and pop. The fries on both meals were lovely and crisp and hot. One thing we noticed was that the burger came with a sauce, and we couldn't quite place what it was, was it a chilli mayo or a paprika mayo? We asked the server who told us that it was the chef's so-called 'dirty sauce', made with ingredients such as mayo, Cajun spices, and lime juice. Thing is, it's a really nice sauce, and not even mentioned on the menu, when it deserves to be, because it was something created not bought. The food was excellent as always, and once again even though we didn't get a starter, we had no room for dessert. I swear one day I'll be able to manage a dessert at West Coast Rock Cafe... in fact some day I might go JUST for dessert... maybe to try The Fudgezilla, but I don't know if I could bring myself to go to Blackpool and to West Coast, and NOT have their delicious food! Give it a try, it's fun, it's casual, and it's good quality. It won't break the bank either.

We shared a cup of chips and guac whilst waiting for our dishes. The guac was zesty and there was plenty of it but I would've preferred it to have been chunkier and less mushy. The veggie tamale cake bites with spinach and butternut squash was a nice dish but a little sweet for my taste. I also had the halloumi and pineapple burrito, which I wasn't hugely keen on - again the sweetness put me off. However, I tried some of my friend's sweetcorn fritters with green tomatillo dipping sauce and wow they were delicious so who knows, it's possible that with different choices I might have enjoyed it more!

It's nice to be able to pick and chose small portions to try more. My Gringa quesadilla was great, and so were my prawn tacos (when we'd stopped giggling at it being such an excellent euphemism)
