We got the mutton sausage roll, pretzel, almond croissant, chocolate cookie and a ham and cheese croissant. Everything was slightly disappointing. The mutton sausage roll had a strong lamb flavour but that's fine for us because we love the lamb flavour and the pastry was flaky. But it felt a bit dry. The pretzel was dry and not chewy. It was disappointing. The almond croissant was too sweet. The chocolate cookie was a bit chewy but not chewy enough. The ham and cheese croissant had a generous portion of ham in it but it was not flaky enough. I didn't get a chance to try any bread but I think that's probably what they are known for. What an incredibly petty individual. We had called to get on a list for baguettes for the 24th. The person we spoke to checked to make sure that they had enough, and they confirmed that we were good to go. Then 20 minutes later we get called back by someone else who is now taking us off the list! No baguettes! Rather than extend their invented rule and 'slightly' inconvenience the store, the customer who did everything correct loses out. The store screwed up, but the customer pays for it. Will never return and will tell others of your poor service. read more

Mamma Mia, Vic west is blessed! I had the pleasure of attending a physically distant gathering with a friend who did us a solid and picked up some Fry's pastry. Well, let me tell you... they got an extra 50 points in my good books! The pastry I super appreciated and thought was high quality 'caliber-ness' was the pain au chocolate - just the right amount of flakiness and chocolate-ness! Oh my, we made their patio rain with crusty confetti!!! Also, the staff their are super friendly, they are, like a rockstar dream team! I can't wait to go beck and try more of their pastry - for I believe I shall be a better person when such opportunity shall arrive! read more

Don't buy the rye bread. It's hard as a rock, and after paying $18 for two loaves that I couldn't cut with a serrated bread knife, my best friend suggested a chainsaw. They have very good bread products and some specialty breads that no-one else in town makes. The only downside I find with them is the flippant attitude by the staff when you phone in an order. The person on the phone is giggling, laughing or talking with someone in the background while you are trying to place an order. I have had this happen several times. You don't know at the end of the call if they actually got your order right. Kind of immature. They need to improve on their phone reception and pay more attention to the customer. read more

Delighted to have such a great bakery in Vic West. Quality breads and pastries, with a small selection of farm fresh eggs and meats from Whole Beast. Today I had a hard time choosing from their pleasing display of breads, a bowl of hand twisted pretzels and gorgeous buttery pastries with fillings like chocolate, local fruits. I enjoyed their meat handpie at a cute table set up outside with a glass of iced tea from next door, while people watching and catching up with an old friend. I look forward to sleepy Sundays when the bakery becomes a pizzeria and there is always a tempting selection to choose from. A nice place to go for honest baking. read more

Best bakery in Victoria, by far (I like Fol Epi too, but their pastries are overpriced). I'm from Switzerland and am very picky in terms of bread/pastries, but Red Wheat is on par with great bakeries I've been to in France. I love their poached pear danish, croissants, breads and pizzas. Today I can in for a chocolate almond croissant and a few other things. The service was terrible the man helping me hardly listened to what I ordered packaged the wrong items and was quite rude. When I got home to have the chocolate almond croissant it was just a regular croissant dry and hard! I called the bakery and the woman basically laughed and just said sorry there's not much she can do! I used to love this bakery, however the consistency of their product is far from good unless you order bread. I've had amazing croissants from here but lately they are dry/hard/overbaked or just completely not what you ordered. I'm very disappointed read more

HANDS DOWN THE BEST BREAD IN VICTORIA Sorry Mark, if you are looking for wonderbread, this isn't the right spot for you. This is fantastic bread made the right way. How one could say it has no taste is remarkable. I agree with Jeremy that the Sourdough Sandwhich loaf is amazing. Anyone who likes Sausage rolls, get to Fry's as soon as possible. I have given them to a half dozen friends and they all love them. Just make sure you get there before noon because they go quick. The focaccia is too good. By this I mean good luck saving some for dinner time. Seriously 1 star Mark? You gave Boston Pizza 3 stars and Smittys 4 stars? Ridiculous. They are one of the local greats like Red Fish Blue Fish, Il Terrazzo, Phillips Brewery etc. If you love bread and more importantly, love great bread made the way it should be, head to Fry's immediately. Possibly my favourite bakery in the city. I love everything here! A must try is the "breakfast in bed" - choux pastry with an egg and meat and veggies for filling. And the doughnuts on Sundays! My wife bought a loaf of sourdough bread yesterday here. The crust was burnt so hard that it was inedible. The flavour was just an acerbic sourness with no complexity or depth. The inside of the loaf had lots of lovely looking bubbles, the bread had too fine a crumb and didn't have the chewiness I would expect from how it looked. If it had been a $5 loaf, I probably would have been less picky, but at $10 this absence of quality in unacceptable. read more

Line up every Saturday! Best baguettes and make sure you try a hand pie ! So tasty! Also the best chocolate almond croissants ever, have to run an extra twenty minutes to justify! When I visit family in Vancouver they also tell me to make sure a stop off at Fry's for treats for them before I come. read more

How dissapointing. After two visits, we continue to receive overcooked and burnt products. The Pain Rustique was black on the bottom, the Pain Chocolate & Lardon cheese pastries were dark dark brown, with the acrid taste overwhelming the intended flavour. Probably won't be going back. read more

I'm still reeling from my experience here -- we are visiting from Seattle to celebrate my child's birthday, which happened to be today. We planned a surprise day for her at the Raptor center over an hour away in Duncan BC and had to be there by 10am -- because it's in a pretty isolated area you need to bring your lunch with you, so I did some research to find a bakery that was open at 8am that also had premade sandwiches that we could throw in the cooler for our lunch. I was excited to find Fry's Red Wheat Bakery via my internet searching; I called the week before we left and explained our situation and whoever answered the phone there assured me that I could get sandwiches that early and if they weren't in the case already it was no trouble to quickly make us two sandwiches. We arrived at 8:15am and there weren't sandwiches in the case yet so I asked about them. A man working there said they wouldn't be ready until after 9am. I explained that I had called the week before to check on this and what I'd been told. He said that he wasn't the one who had talked to me last week and no they would not make us two sandwiches. I mentioned that we could wait as late as 8:45 -- could they just throw two together in the next 30 minutes? Again they refused. There were five people working and the whole time we were there only two other customers came in. At least two of the five people were standing there with not much or nothing to do. I explained again that this was basically our only chance at having a lunch as we were on a tight schedule and being unfamiliar with the area I didn't know what else was open with sandwiches at 8am. I asked, could they charge me for sandwiches and just hand me a baguette and some loose fillings so we could make the sandwiches ourselves and again they refused. I spent the next 20 minutes in a panic walking up and down the block and then trying to search for an alternative nearby on my mobile phone using maps. Finally I found a Fol Epi bakery near us. We were thankfully able to make it out to them and to the Raptor center exactly on time so we didn't miss any of it. At Fol Epi they wished my daughter a happy birthday -- what a difference! I can't believe that Fry's Red Wheat Bakery was fine with making a 10 year old go without lunch on her birthday for literally no reason. I mean, what kind of people do that? read more

Some of the best French pastry around. Their bread can be great, but more and more they are overbaking loaves to the point of being black. I always ask for the least well-done they have and sometimes it's still badly burnt. Not sure if they are having trouble controlling the temperature of the oven, but I am surprised they are willing to sell loaves that are so objectively burnt. This issue seems to be getting worse. A shame, because when they are on they are fantastic. read more

Stopped by to get vege pie but was disappointed to learn that it is only available on weekends. So we tried the goat cheese and tomato savory Danish. It was an incredible blend of texture, flavor and aroma. Amazing wowness. Have to plan another visit soon. read more
