One of those places I just stumbled upon that was close to my hotel. I walked in the first time, and saw some pretty nice baked things...... I then went the second day to get coffee and I couldn't decide on if I wanted sweet or savory. I chose sweet..... and while I was leaving Victoria with my raspberry danish sitting in a nice little bag, I bit into it, and have to say it was one of the best danish pastries I have ever had, it was bakery buttery good, and they do not skimp on the raspberry jelly topping, where some places it looks like they just add enough to call it a danish.... well this was so good and if I had more time I would have drove back down to this place to buy up the rest of what they have. They sell baked loaves of bread, and individual baked pastries, and also coffee.... oh that is really good here too. Fol Epi... you are now on my to go list anytime I am in Victoria, and now looking back at my pictures, there are cookies, croissants, palmiers, kouign amanns...... and more.... I need to try. Beautiful place, I love that there's three in one in this building, you have your cafe style serving coffees, the bread and party spot and then a meat and cheese and grocer restaurant style spot. We ordered a bread loaf at Fol Epi to take home as we've been before and loved it. This time we got the French loaf, it's not full sourdough but still fresh as can be and crusty exterior. I also got an iced vanilla matcha which was delish. We also ordered two danish style cheese pastry wheel things, my only criticism was the cheese was quite cook so it's more of a crunch pastry than a soft one with also a hint of mustard. Service was quick and very nice! Staff was chatty. No pics because we ate everything real fast lol. read more

I wish I lived around the corner from this place! We picked up a variety of their pastries this morning and not one item disappointed. The interior is so adorable and reminds me of the homely cafes in Europe. As soon as you walk in you're immediately hit with the smell of baked goodness and their glass case and walls are full of freshly baked breads Highlight eats were the savory Danish, curry puff pastry and chocolate muffin. We bought a box of items for our Grandfather's nursing home staff and it was a hit! They all are keen to stop by soon to get their own fill of these delicious delights. read more

One of my vacation's best highlights is my morning coffee and fresh Croissants. I Googled and found this little French Bakery, Fol Epi, not far from our hotel. It took me and my wife about ten minutes to walk and get there. The area is a new neighborhood that is coming up with a lot of construction. As soon as we walked in, we could smell the freshly baked pastries, which smelled like baked bread, butter, sugar, rising yeast, and vanilla. We got three fresh and warm Croissants and two coffees from the next door. On the way back, we noticed a mother deer and a calf, and we had to take a few photos of them. We enjoyed everything from the patio sitting to our coffee and pastries in Fol Epi. I recommend visiting this little French bakery and the next-door coffee shop. read more

Super chewy and fresh pastries. The queen amman (yes I know I misspelled it) was the best. Chocolate croissant had great tasting chocolate that was soft. Cortado was okay, oat milk latte was better. Nice people and don't be put off by the industrial area. read more

For Epi is a cute bakery for a pastry or a fresh baked loaf of bread with friendly staff. Tucked into the far back corner of the area you could almost miss them but luckily we didn't. They have a selection that changes pretty often so it's a great way to try something new and their Rhubarb pastry is delicious! I was disappointed that both times when ordering "for here" drinks were presented in single use "to-go" cups. I ordered a chai latte and a hot chocolate both of which were fine but not great. Another miss is that they won't heat up your pastry; but it makes a big difference if your pastry is warm or cold. Difficult to time with when a new batch has come out of the oven. I'd recommend getting your drinks elsewhere but stop by for a pastry & their fresh made bread selection! read more

We've been regulars at Fol Epi for the past year and half now. We keep coming back because their bread is unreal. We're huge fans of their boule, which we buy kilos of at a time, their baguettes and of course their fol epi. Love their pretzels and foccacia, and their pies are absolutely divine. They have their own grain bin out back and make all their bread from scratch, in house. You can taste and feel the difference when the sourdough is fermented properly rather than being full of dough conditioners or other additives. Fol Epi has won as my favorite bakery in Victoria. From their delectable sandwiches, to their scrumptious macarons, each baked good they make is perfection. Having travelled to Paris a year ago, I can honestly say that their croissants and macarons stand next to Parisian quality. Their soft-serve organic vanilla ice-cream is to die for. Naturally, it comes in a house-made waffle cone (still hot), with your choice of fresh toppings. I always pick the just-toasted nuts and house-made caramel...so delish. Also I give them kudos for using primarily organic ingredients and for making an effort to source locally as much as possible (they get their sausages and sliced meats from farms on the island). read more

Fantastic bakery in Victoria. There is parking but not a whole lot. The space itself is rather cramped and dwarfed by the restaurant next door. But the food is absolutely scrumptious. I tried the sausage roll, chocolate almond croissant, and ham and cheese croissant. The sausage roll wasn't warm, and that would have been nice, but it was still very tasty. I did get a hard thing, which is an unfortunate hazard of eating sausage, but I would order it again. The roll was a little bit greasy and could have used a side of mustard, but the sausage had a great flavor. The ham and cheese croissant was incredible. You could taste the butter and the ham was evenly dispersed throughout. It had the lightest, flakey texture. I absolutely loved that. I also really loved the chocolate almond croissant. For one thing, it is giant and filled to the brim, not just with chocolate but with almond paste as well. The outside is brushed with chocolate and rolled in chopped almonds. It is heavenly and full of texture. Each bite was like a choose-your-own-adventure, constantly exciting. My husband and I fought over the last bite. We also grabbed a couple cups of coffee and sat outside on the patio and enjoyed our breakfast. A few croissant flakes fell onto the ground and a swarm of darling little birds surrounded us and cleaned up our mess. My husband had a fun time dropping a few additional crumbs on purpose just to feed the cute little birds. They came very close to eating out of my hand, I felt like Cinderella. read more

3.5 stars I went here just to try their macarons. They're $2 each now (They're used to be $1.5). I got mocha one and the caramel one. Umm what should I say? I kind of feel disappointed as I've heard so many good reviews for this place. Their macarons were not bad; they're ok. I ended up liking the mocha one more than the caramel for some reasons. Anyways, I felt like they didn't taste very different. I personally felt that the purchase wasn't worth my money. I might return there and try something else, but maybe not the macarons. read more

WOW what a great bakery! I wasn't expecting to find Fol Epi when visiting Caffe Fantastico next door, but knew I needed to get something there. The shop is pretty small, but so cute! The exposed brick wall lined with fresh bread loaves is comforting and charming. I ordered an almond croissant and an egg salad sandwich. Both were amazing, especially the croissant! A relative took us here, and we came back--the bread was that good, (the pizza was even better--better even than Olive, in San Francisco, one of my favorite bar pizza joints) and I was delighted to find the bread available at a charcuterie on Fort st. (in Victoria) as well. I also found the espresso to be very drinkable, but that led to a ridiculous incident with the staff. Apparently, the owner is of the opinion that espresso only tastes good in china and as a policy, the place will not serve espresso to go--in paper cups. You may think that the customer is always right, but not here. I normally carry my own vintage restaurant cup for the purpose, but with sea plane luggage weight limits, I forwent the practice. (Is forwent a word?). I went round and round with the barrista, and even with the owner not present, she wouldn't budge. So don't order your espresso to go--or stop at one of the big second hand stores to get a china cup before heading over, (the Value Village, just beyond the bridge is fairly mindblowing if you don't have gigantic second hand stores in your town--we don't). The charcuterie on Fort had a limited selection of Fol Epi's bread, so if you're into bread as I am--and Victoria doesn't have a great selection of artisan breads, do check out this gem of a bakery. read more

I love the story behind Fol Epi and so had to go there to try their bread. The staff and atmosphere at the Dockside location were great. Ham and Cheese Croissant: flaky and yummy Boule Loaf: the crust was just way too hard for me. We couldn't eat it. I normally buy my bread at the Esquimalt Bake Shop, located about 5 minutes from my house. But the owner went back to Vietnam for a month, which then left me needing to go beyond walking distance for my bread. I had read about Fol Epi in EAT Magazine, so I decided to check it out. And while the bread is more expensive than the Esquimalt Bake Shop, there's a reason. Fol Epi mills its own flour, which is all organic. Then the breads are baked in a stone oven. Their whole wheat loaf is their best value - it's crusty, thick and hearty and costs $5.50. But due to the heartiness and density of the bread, it can last quite some time. Thin slices of the bread work well for sandwiches. The crusty baguette is $3.50, but the best I've tried in Victoria. It's everything you've ever wanted in a baguette and more. And they also make those macarons that everybody liked a couple of years ago (but hey, they still taste good). read more

I am only writing about the croissants here. I had heard and read stunning reviews of Fol Epi and had heard that they make phenomenal croissants. All that I can say is that if you've never had a properly baked croissant, then these are great. If you have, then these are too crunchy on the inside and not moist and chewy enough on the inside. It seems like they're baking these along with all of their other breads and giving them lots of intense heat. This is great for breaking big meaty loaves of bread, but not so great for a delicate croissant. The flavour while tasty does get diminished as the flavour of the outside of the croissant overwhelms that of the interior. This may have been a fluke, so I will give it another try in the future, as everyone else I was with were quite pleased with what they got. It has been a while since we have had truly fantastic croissants in Victoria. The last I remember was from a tiny French bakery on Douglas St near city hall in the early 90s. read more

finally tried this place after friend raved about for over a year. I had a baguette sandwich and sausage roll. baguettes was a little pricey for portion, but very tasty. i could easily eat two in one setting, but probably perfect for having side of pastry later. the sausage roll was $5 which i throught was one of the most expensive rolls i boughten. but i tell u what. it was one of the best rolls i had. good quality of meat which was not fatty as cheaper rolls are and perfect amount of herbs to flavour the meat., pastery was perfect with a buttery taste. makes me wonder what this places crousants taste like. i think i have to come back to try more. read more

Stopped in for americano, London fog and a macaron. The toddler absolutely inhaled the chocolate macaron! Oh and I got some small batch mustard in a sophisticated jar because I'm easily sold on grainy mustard in neato jars. My husband wished they left the tea bag in his London fog. This is where I go when I feel deserving of a treat! You walk in here and it just feels so authentic- flour all over the floor and everything, their bread out in open air on display. Their pastries are beautiful, give their seasonal pie a try, it's bomb! I never leave this place without a bolé, it's so yummy and makes for great sandwiches. This bakery is a-MA-zing. They mill their own flour, which really is 'nuff said. When I'm in Victoria, I make a habit to go for an early morning run, timed to arrive at Fol Epi when they open. I grab goodies that are fresh out of the oven, and a tea to go from the place next door. I am very value oriented (cheap?). Fol Epi is very expensive. You absolutely get incredible value for what you pay. The Boule is incredible. We ordered Tortierre for Xmas and it was lovely and rich. The chocolate almond croissant is beyond great and priced high enough to encourage moderation. Worth the short walk or bike ride from downtown. read more
