First off, you need to call and book a table in advance. You arrive close to your time of booking, but don't plan to eat at that time. You take a seat in the social waiting lounge. A server will bring you menus and get you a local beer while you look over the menu. When you're ready to order, you do so from the waiting area. Once your order is stated by the kitchen, you get a table. This is such a great system for socializing. It's much nicer to sit on a comfy chair in a group versus being stuck at a dinner table. The food is quite delicious, but the menu is very limited. I've had the grilled goat cheese*, a roasted chicken dish, the seasonal vegetable side, and the posh prawn cocktail. All was delicious, but on the last visit I really wanted something light and lean, but they don't have that. I was thinking a pretty simple salad with some grilled chicken. Not an option here. It's a gastropub and they only do that style of food. *If you order the grilled goat cheese as a main you will get 2x the goat cheese and some potatoes. That isn't clear on the menu, but that's what happens. Still, the food they turn out is mostly local and they donate a portion of certain food (I think the fish and chips) to a local charity. It's definitely a great option in the Exeter area. I must leave you with one final note. Although I'm not a fan of sweets, Most of my colleagues and customers order their sticky toffee pudding. It is apparently one of the better ones in the area.

The Kings Arms is in the charming village that surrounds Montacute House. It sits just across from the 12th century church. It has 15 en suite rooms, a bar and restaurant. The lounge area is comfortable and very nicely decorated. The staff were very pleasant, and our room was very nice and overlooked their large beer garden. The bath was small, with a shower and nice fluffy towels. There was a TV and tea kettle in the room. We went to the lounge for drinks before dinner and enjoyed them while using the free WiFi. The staff were pleasant and attentive, and the lounge area is set up so you seem almost alone even with many other guests are about. There are several dining areas, all very nice. The tables are set so you can have an intimate dinner. The menu was varied and the food we had was exceptional. We started with the cheese plate. 4 local cheeses, all very good and a wonderful fruit chutney (£9). For mains, I had the lamb ribs, which were delicious (£20), and my wife had the fillet of hake (£12), also very nice. I had a glass of Argentine Malbec that was very good (£18/ bottle, £6.50 for a 250ml pour). My desert was a trio of their very good home made ice creams (£5).

The sticky toffee pudding was really good and the toffee sauce was yummy. They had a few dessert option including creme brûlée and ice cream too. I absolutely can't recommend this place enough. My mum and sister are going again later in the week and I'm jealous I have to go back up north!

This…read moreplace offers what you might expect in any decent pub, a large selection of beers, lagers and real ales as well as really good food. I'd compare this with the Queens Arms (see my earlier review) as the nearest thing to it, although the Rose & Crown benefits from having a large garden out the back making this THE place to go when it's sunny. The pub is in a beautiful setting, great for walkers and not too far from town to be worth the trip. We regularly leave the car here and get a taxi back into Yeovil or Sherborne which sets us back less than a tenner. There's regular live music and a healthy following of locals who are always in there, regardless. I've introduced this place to a number of guys from work, who now regularly take clients here for lunch.
