Just to give you a heads-up on your own packaged Norway adventure, Flåm and Geiranger are the two…read morevillages in which you'll spend an inordinate amount of time because they are the tourist hubs of the most picturesque fjords in Norway. Geiranger is the smaller of the two with only 250 residents, but it's Norway's third largest cruise ship port. It definitely felt like it when Jamie W. and I were there during a two-hour stop on our fjord cruise from Ålesund (review: https://bit.ly/3ckj0Zb). Beyond looking at the torrent that courses through town, we didn't much to do but eat. Options were pretty limited unless you want a hot dog. Like real bad. This cafe is on the main pedestrian walkway between the campground parking and the cruise ship terminal, and we weren't that hopeful of its quality based on its prime location. It was also drawing a lot of loudish tourists from various nations, and they weren't mindful of either the noise they were making or the excessive space they were taking. It was enough to test the limits of my butt-clenching abilities. However, we were pretty delighted by what we ordered and shared. First up was the 190 NOK ($19.30) Ham & Cheese Sandwich, generously portioned on a baguette with cucumber slices bringing fresh crunch (photo: https://bit.ly/3QHsgWn). Then there was the 280 NOK ($28.50) Dagens Suppe (Soup of the Day), a spicy and creamy carrot soup topped with toasted croutons and scallions (photo: https://bit.ly/3R363BP). Yes, it was like a school cafeteria lunch but a really well done one. We were pleased because we had a 3-1/2-hour boat ride back to Ålesund, and we didn't want no stinkin' hot dog. FOOD - 4 stars...surprisingly satisfying ham & cheese baguette sandwich and spicy carrot soup AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well-kept to keep the tourists under control SERVICE - 4 stars...quite polite considering how rude some customers were TOTAL - 4 stars...if you're ever in Geiranger, this may be your best bet for a quick bite RELATED - Exploring Norway? It confirmed that an American should never order a burger in Europe. That's rather a broad stroke but we live in Europe and trust me, he has made this mistake many times. The beef just is too lean, causing a rock hard over cooked patty in this case. It was served on a bun that disintegrated into bread crumbs ( perhaps the kitchen might consider toasting the bun before serving). I had a Taco Salad. It piqued my curiosity. The pork was in little cubes that were spicy in a flavorful way, with rocket salad under it (which sort of cooked from the heat of the meat and sauce.) on the edge of the plate was a glob of mango from a jar. The flavor combinations were okay, and since this all sat on a huge papadan, inedible, the effect of all this soy sauce was Bangkok does tex mex. there was not one ingredient reminiscent of south of the border chilli spices, onion..etc. so again, this was an American thinking that something quite different was going to be on the plate. Oh well, it wasn't bad, just a surprise. Also ordered a small plate of focaccia with aioli which came after the main course, effectively it was toasted bread (over $5 for four slices). This restaurant is on the harbor across from the shopping center and parking seemed to free up often enough. Our bill for three, including a beer and a coke, was over the equivalent of 75 dollars. I would recommend having a beer out on the deck (views!) and then going elsewhere to eat. Oh, we wanted the enticing Mussels in cream for lunch, but they were "out" so we needed to order a second choice.
