Quick Take: Some of the best fried chicken wings in Decatur, AL. I would definitely recommend this…read moreplace. Friendly people and spacious tables, even if in a small space. I definitely plan to return. Visited today with some friends. Been here a few times. I got a wing plate which is 8 wings and a side for $14 with tax. The prices on the menu include tax. I opted for a new sauce today and got Hot Honey Garlic. It was alright. The garlic was pungent. After the first few bites it was more bearable. I got onion rings as my side. They're very thin, almost like onion straws. I prefer their fries. One friend got the honey wings. They were sweet. Not a ton of flavor. I liked mine better. Neither flavor comes close to the Hot or Xtra Hot. Those are very tasty and at the top of the list. I will stick to those. Don't get turned off by Xtra Hot. They have the right amount of heat for a chicken wing. The hot is almost comparable to a "medium" heat. My other friend got the Special of the Day, Steak Sandwich. It looked ok. No cheese. They forgot to add his horseradish aioli. They brought it after-the-fact. He said it probably would have been better on it while it was hot. He also bought an appetizer trio for the table. The loaded fries were good. The bacon was real bacon and cheese like a nacho cheese. The fried green beans and pickles were delicious. The bean had like a tempura batter. The pickles had a cornmeal type batter. With nothing under them to soak up the grease the pickles on the bottom ended up being too greasy. But I want to get them because the ones that were good were pretty good. Owner came out and checked on us. Overall the people are pretty friendly. I will come back for sure. But sticking to my normal wings.

Serrano's Mexican - Pizza Birria

This restaurant started as a food truck but saw enough success that it's now opened two brick and mortar locations, one in Decatur and the other in Priceville, so that seemed like a good indicator. I went for a late lunch after work around 2 PM a few weeks ago. The restaurant has a small, slightly bumpy/torn up parking lot and a curiously large step up into the restaurant -- watch your footing, as I almost fell forward trying to walk inside. The restaurant is small. You enter and are greeted by a nice bar area; go down the hall and it has maybe 5 tables at the end, along with restrooms. It did take me a while for anyone to offer me seating. It seemed like only one person was waiting tables. Though he made eye contact with me a few times from the serving area down the hall, he didn't acknowledge me until I walked down the hall to look around and see if anyone was available to help me. He then asked if I had a carryout order (I think -- pretty limited English on his part and even more limited Spanish on mine), and I said no but that I'd like to sit and eat. After that, he promptly seated me and took my drink order. Chips and salsa came out after that, and my food order and eventual check were timely, though I'd never really describe his demeanor as particularly friendly. Not the end of the world, but I wish I'd felt more welcome. The chips were solid - warm and fresh - but the salsa wasn't especially flavorful but for a strong cilantro vibe. I was starving, though, so I munched happily enough until my order arrived. I got the quesabirria combo, which comes with two quesabirria tacos and rice and beans. These tacos tend to be filling and many combos elsewhere come with three; personally, I think two is plenty, though I'd say the price is a little higher here than comparable spots I've tried. The rice and beans were exactly average...or, they averaged out to average, lol. Rice slightly below average (low flavor, a few slightly undercooked/crunchy bits), beans slightly above (pleasantly smoky), and so on and so forth. I was primarily here for the main event: birria tacos. And unfortunately, despite the rave reviews I read, I thought these were really disappointing. They didn't skimp on meat, at least, but...despite being generously portioned, the meat didn't have a ton of flavor. It was a little chewier than the silky, melting beef I've had at other places. But the worst part was they were overwhelmingly - OVERWHELMINGLY - greasy. Don't get me wrong, birria is by nature a rich dish and I wasn't expecting to get up and skip away home after a light meal, but... It was so greasy that the taco shells, which are usually pleasantly crispy after grilling, were for the most part sopping wet, even on my first bite. Every time I picked a taco up, fatty juices/grease spilled from the edges. And when I squeezed, a stream practically ran onto the plate. You'd think at least with this much fat/grease they'd be more flavorful, but they really were not a flavor bomb. They weren't inedible, but I must admit I left feeling disappointed and having not adequately fulfilled my craving. I know there are lots of well-regarded Mexican spots in Decatur, so I suppose I'll keep trying. Hopefully, I came on an off day. I wish this restaurant the best and I hope their success continues; even though it was not for me on this visit, it's clearly popular with others.

Major hidden gem in the Hartselle area! 4.5/5…read more I made the drive over after working in Decatur just to try Old Havana Cafe. It's in a sort of nondescript shopping mall. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a carryout only establishment. However, they do have a few chairs and a comfy loveseat to sit on while you wait for your order. I didn't order ahead but I was able to place my order at the counter. The menu online is more extensive than the menu on the board behind the register, so I'm not certain of what all is usually available. I wound up ordering a Cubano and a guava and cream cheese pastry. The man who came out to take my order and delivered it to me when it was finished was unbelievably warm and welcoming. He had such a calm and gentle demeanor and made me feel right at home. Definitely a highlight. My food took a few minutes to come out but overall was well within a reasonable time to wait; it was very hot and fresh. It was wrapped nicely and delivered to my waiting hands. I took it out to the car to eat. The cuban sandwich was quite good. Symphony of mustard, savory and slightly sweet ham, and sour pickles. Really good flavors, and piled high between the bread. My one small complaint is that previously the bread I've had on really good Cuban sandwiches has been a bit crispier than this particular one; it was a little more chewy than I've had in the past. Very very minor though, and more a preference than anything I suppose. That guava and cream cheese pastry, though....whewwwwww. It was my first time having a freshly fried one and oh my GOODNESS it was delicious. The guava was sticky and syrupy sweet, balanced by the creamy and dense cream cheese. The pastry was scalding hot and delightfully flaky. It was too rich to eat in one sitting, but so completely delightful. Although it's certainly a drive for me in normal circumstances, I'll happily return when in the area. I've tried a good handful of Hartselle area restaurants, and this stands out as one of the best.
