So yeah, I'm happy with my haircuts, and to his credit, he's adapted to my evolving sense of style, appearance, and identity in a way that makes me feel good and gets me compliments. More importantly, I've gotten to know Stephen and have observed his integrity and a keen sense of customer service. This is a lovely salon. The staff is so nice and thoughtful. I started going only because I wanted a place close to home and now I am hooked. David, Wendy, Steve and Ashley are always smiling and they are very talented stylists. Wendy has some wicked color skills and can dish out some fashion advice with a side of sarcasm. (This girl works on her feet for 8 or 9 hours IN HEELS!) For established customers, they will bend the rules sometimes and stay open late. Sure, parking is a pain because they are next door to Berryhill, but think of it as a two-fer when you stop for a bite to eat after you get your hair done. It's not a frilly, girlie place - men are welcome as are well behaved kids. If you are a pain in the butt kind of customer, they'll squeeze you out - and I don't blame them. Book early! After much thought about where in Houston I should get my hair cut and highlighted, I finally settled on David, Ect. I was able to get an appointment on pretty short notice, and my anxiety about getting my hair done in a new place was immediately eased when I walked in the front door. They were friendly, and my stylist Ludmila even got me some hot coffee while I was waiting for my color to process. She was chatty and friendly, and best of all she did an awesome job on my hair. The salon is very clean and professional, it is an exclusive Redkin Salon, and they use quality product. I will definately return to see the same stylist again, and I have heard that the other stylists are wonderful as well. It was not a cheap trip, but well worth the splurge! Another disappointing haircut... onto the next stylist. Sadly this was a recommendation, because my friend got a haircut there and she really liked it. The location is great, the decor is great, the staff are super sweet, but my haircut was a mess. My favorite thing about a haircut is the scalp massage during the shampooing. Not only did she not give a massage... barely touched my hair... but she used freezing cold water. She laughed it off and said "sorry, our water takes forever to warm up". She didn't even wait for it to warm it. So I had a cold, unrelaxing shampooing. A really big part of getting a haircut is the "blown out" look and feeling you get when it's all done. She flattened out my hair did not give it a "blow out". It looked like I just left the house with my hair slightly moist and un-dried. My hair was really choppy and was uneven in the back. The top layer was obviously cut and had a very large gap between the top layer and bottom layer. There was no blending. The stylist was super sweet, but I would not recommend her for a haircut. read more

As a male, I will write only to the male audience.... David can go short men't cuts with precision and quickness. I have been going for 4 months now, and David compares with stylists who charge twice as much as he does. Men's cuts range from $30-40 depending on tip. He stays up on the current trends and makes you feel comfortable in his chair. Technically speaking, I have to have heavy texturizing done to my hair and David is very skilled at razor texturizing. Most importantly, he is consistent. This is the single most important quality in a men's cut. Call a couple of days ahead of time. He usually keeps his schedule free 2-3 ahead of time. read more

I visited David Ect. last Saturday as a first time customer. I have been driving back to my hometown to get my hair done for the past three years and it was becoming exhausting. So I decided to try Jenny. She does my fiance's hair along with a handful of other friends so I figured it would be a good place to start when finding someone local for the first time. It was a really great experience. I have a very thick, ashy brown natural hair color that I like to cover up with blonde shades. I am recently engaged and wanting my somewhat damaged hair (from bleaching blonde in college) to grow long and healthy for the wedding. For the first time in probably 7 years bleach was not used on my hair to give me a blonde shade. It was definitely a different approach that the typical highlighting technique most stylists have used on my hair. She used different shades of blond and gave me a more honey golden hair tone. It's sort of hard to explain but it looks great. My fiance said that my hair looks the best he's ever seen it. It was definitely a different look that I normally end up with but it looks soft and really accents my skin tone. Plus the technique was not near as damaging on my hair and will help my hair not be damaged. On top of the successful coloring, Jenny also went above and beyond to explain everything to me and why she was suggesting what she was. She is very knowledgeable of her craft and you can tell she is very passionate about what she does. She was also helpful in suggesting products that would help me towards my goal of longer and less damaged hair. She also showed me tips and idea on how to style my hair myself in a more timely manner and in a more efficient way. Of course beauty comes at a bit of a price tag but overall I believe it was worth it and was told the price would decrease with regular upkeep. Definitely suggest seeing Jenny at David Ect., especially if you are blonde. :) read more

David Etc. Not recommended, unless you're going for that 5-year-old girl look. David Etc. is a good-looking salon. It's clean, pleasant and fashionably appointed. The look you get from its stylists however may not be. I was going out of town and needed an emergency haircut. My usual stylist at Cut Loose was unfortunately unavailable. I decided to take my chances at David Etc. My husband had been there several times and was satisfied with the service. Also the place is conveniently close to me in the Heights and strategically located next to the Berryhill on 11th. The stylist I got an appointment with turned out to be a nice enough girl, though her skills may have been lacking. Maybe it was just her listening skills. I asked for long sweeping bangs, and in return received shorter than Gidget-sized bangs that sat ridiculously high on my forehead. I hadn't had bangs like that since I cut them myself when I was five. Needless to say, I spent the next few months willing my hair to grow out and pinning my bangs up with a barrette. I won't return to this place and wouldn't recommend it to ladies - unless you want to look 25 years younger. I believe they can cut men's hair well, but is that really saying so much? Also, the salon features a line of poor-performing Redken products - a few of which are still sitting barely used in my bathroom. The only time I'll be seen near David Etc. salon is when I'm on my way into Berryhill for Tamale Tuesdays. read more

Liz Crawley-Trahan has been my stylist for a while now and I really love her and her work. She listens to me, counsels me and offers solutions to my hair woes. Her hair coloring skills are top notch and she's super-detailed with her work and I'm always happy with the results. It's unusual that she's ever running behind and I have to wait, which is rare in my experience. Overall, she's a sweet person and a talented stylist. She took all the time necessary to do all stages of my new hair color perfectly. I went to David Etc for the first time yesterday. My regular hair dresser wasn't available and I had heard good hings about this salon so decided to try it. I hadn't heard of any particular stylist so I just asked them on the phone for whoever was available. I ended up with Stephanie. I didn't know anything about her but I trusted that they wouldn't hire someone unless she was good at what she does. It turned out she was awesome!! She listened to what I like/don't like, she gave sensible suggestions and she did a beautiful job of the color and cut. She cut my hair in exactly the way I like it cut. I would recommend Stephanie to anyone! She really seems to have what it takes to be a well rounded and gifted stylist. I am only giving a 4/5 rating because I didn't find the salon atmosphere very warm and inviting. It appeared as though each stylist worked alone but in the same room with a lack of friendliness among the stylists. I wanted to lighten my hair for the summer and was nervous about the process. I had seen some posts from Front Room liked the pictures. I called Wendy (my wonderful stylist) and told her what I wanted and she came up with a plan that fit my skin color. I love it!! They always know exactly what I want and I have no problem handing all the decisions over to Wendy because I know she will always get it right. The place has a very inviting feel to it, the staff is super friendly and Wendy keeps me looking pretty darn fantastic. She's a bit of a color/highlighting extraordinaire. All time worst haircut. The stylist, Mr. David himself, did not listen at all when I described what I wanted which was nice short, blended layers. Instead, he gave me a generic cut. I came out of the chopping block with a THICK layer just below my ear, and the bottom layer below my shoulder. I look like a mushroom head. To top it off, the layers are asymmetrical and uneven. Horrible experience. Not the cut I was looking for, especially for $67. read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE Went to this nice looking salon because it was close to home. Walked in to make an appointment and was introduced to Greg. Told him what I wanted, color and a haircut. He said he could take me right then. It was 12:30 in the afternoon, I walked out at 7:30. NIGHTMARE!!! Turns out the guy was 7 weeks out of beauty school and did not have a clue what he was doing. I was charged FULL PRICE for this terrible, terrible job. He had to be rescued twice by another stylist trying to save his mess ups. I have to go someplace else to get this fixed! So maybe the other stylist are good, but why would you let this guy in your expensive salon and not let clients know that he is not fully trained???? $197.00 was my charge! My first experience was not good. The reason , the color I asked for, blond highlights all over I did not receive. In the back of my hair & crown it is obvious the color/bleach did not grab because it is still a darker shade than what is in the front. I've been highlighting my hair for more years than I care to admit so I know an experienced & *mindful* stylist would have caught this during the cut & blow out. I loathe going back to a salon & complaining and having my hair redone because it is not only a waste of my time, it also puts more chemicals on my already just bleached hair. I only stopped in today because I needed hair product and had seen through the window on my way to Berryhills that they sold my hair product. As I entered, I was greeted in a friendly manner by Ashlie and Wendy. As I looked at the product line I use, I asked about what to do about my newly frizzy hair and not only did they take the time to help me, but they sent with some samples to try so I could get the product that really did what I wanted it to do. They were so kind and gracious in response to my concerns that my hair no longer felt like my own. While I have a stylist, I will be purchasing my products there and if my stylist no longer cut hair, I would check them out first because they were so real and kind with me. Honestly, they went above and beyond after a long day and I appreciate them for it! (and I had a four year old in tow and they were quite patient with him!) Kudos to Ashlie and Wendy! read more

I'm really bad about reviewing things when I have a good experience, so I wanted to make sure I remembered to do this! I haven't had my hair cut in a long time, like a looong time, and my usual stylist had switched salons three times in the past year, so I decided it was a) time for a cut and b) time for a new stylist. I am always nervous about picking a stylist, so that's part of the reason it's been a while..I had been to David Etc years ago, but decided to give it another shot since it is so close to my house. I called yesterday and told them i needed someone who was good at cutting long hair. I was able to get an apt the same day with Ashlie. I showed up a few minutes early but didn't have to wait at all. I begrudgingly told her how long it had been since my last cut, but she said no judgment, so that got her a gold star straight off the bat. I showed her a couple pics of what I wanted, and she went to work! There were a couple of questions I had about her technique while she was cutting, and she was really great about not only explaining the process, but showing me on her own hair. I could not be happier with the end result, and would definitely recommend her! My only complaint is that I wasn't offered any beverage, which I guess I've come to expect at salons..oh well! Probably shouldn't have been drinking wine at 3:00 on a Wednesday anyways.. read more

This was a radial difference from the upscale chain salon I'd been going to before - I didn't feel like I was on an assembly line! This salon is ok, but not great. My old salon was the same price and in my opinion the experience was much better. At my old salon, when they washed your hair, it was very relaxing, more like a scalp massage than a shampoo. The lights were dimmed and they had music playing. At David Etc, the shampoo was very rough, and I am not tender-headed. You are looking up into bright lights, and I don't know if it was the type of chair, or maybe it wasn't adjusted right for my height, but my neck was killing me by the time the shampoo was done. Bottom line, you can get a good haircut here but it's nothing amazing. read more

I went to David Etc. for a cut and color (I hadn't cut or colored my hair since December and I wanted to re-do my ombre) I have really really long hair and wanted to keep the length, but get my bangs trimmed and make my ombre more dramatic (since it had faded). I told Heather that I wanted it to be almost black on the top, and after she was done, it still looked like my natural hair color, it didn't look any darker. I also told her I wanted it to fade into a light blonde at the bottom and be really drastic from the dark to the light, but all she did was put in a honey tone in the middle (that looks exactly like my natural hair color). Even though I asked her for the honey tone, I still wanted more blonde on the bottom. I don't even think she put in any blonde in the bottom. So the color took about 2 and a half hours and looked the exact same as before I got it colored. She did a really good job cutting my bangs, but the rest of my hair looked really blunt and choppy, so I asked her to make it more textured (and she did). I also asked for a lot of layers and she barely gave me any. I walk up to pay at the and and she charged me $246.00 (without tip). My jaw DROPPED. Never in my life have I paid that much for a cut and color. I've had multiple ombres done before (that look way better than this one) that cost $120. I was appalled and asked why it was so much and she said it was because of the "base color." I blame myself for not asking the price before my appointment, but on their website it says: "haircut and style- $52 and up. all over permanent color- $53 and up" so I was figuring it would be around $120, maybe a little more because of the length of my hair. TIP FOR EVERYONE: Ask how much your service is going to cost before you go through with it. Don't make the same mistake I did. I paid $250 and 3 hours of my life to get my bangs trimmed because my hair looks the exact same other than that. Also, the atmosphere isn't that great and no one there is overly friendly. There are plenty of other salons in Houston to choose from. read more

I went to David Etc after I found out that my regular stylist was out of town. The stylists who were recommended to me were all booked that day, but I was able to get in with another stylist. She was really nice but I started to quietly panic when it took her several minutes to section my hair before cutting it. I had flashbacks to when my sister, who is a stylist, was practicing on me back in high school. When she asked me if I wanted it shorter in the back, I asked her if I could see it. It was terrible. Instead of a stacked look in the back, it was more like a bulky, uneven, chunky type of look. I could not wait to get out of there. I pulled it back into a ponytail (a very short ponytail), paid and got out of there. I called my regular salon on my way back to work and was able to get an appointment with someone who was able to fix it.
