I searched in and around Denver to find a good Kung Fu School, and I have to say this is by far the…read morebest. I found that the other schools were very focused on profit (aka... buy our unique clothes/shoes which are very high compared to what you find online and lots of pressure to sign a one year contract), didn't have a safe/decent training facility, or weren't really Kung Fu schools. The Sifu at this school charges month-to-month and charges significantly less than other programs. Don't believe me? Check the numbers here and other places. He is also interested in teaching the art and philosophies of Kung Fu. Not teaching you how to beat people up. I actually had a school tell me I would be able to pummel people in a couple months. This isn't what Kung Fu is about. I studied here for a year before being relocated to another state and I have to say it is one of the things I miss most about Colorado.

I can safely say Boulder Kung Fu Academy changed my life. I began training because I did not know…read morehow to channel my anger and frustration, suffered from depression and anxiety, and needed a physical outlet to move my body. Admittedly I also have always been a fan of those cheesy old kung fu movies. In the end, I did not know this would be a life-changing experience. I have moved through many physical challenges, joint issues, and etc through my 8 years of kung fu, qigong and tai chi training. I highly recommend Sifu Wang as a teacher. He is compassionate, knows how to meet his students where they are at, and is a great guide and motivator, seeming to know exactly where your limitations are and how to help you understand your own body, when to push and when to rest. As a side benefit, I am comfortable in a bikini. I am grateful to have an unexpected extended family of brothers and sisters who come from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences and yet we all are in this life and practice together. I am a calmer, more balanced and centered person and I attribute much of this to my martial arts practice at Boulder Kung Fu.

Pai Lum White Dragon Martial Arts - Forms practice at camp

Pai Lum White Dragon Martial Arts

Like most martial arts schools, there is plenty of opportunity for friendship and fun. White Dragon…read moreMartial Arts is, however, at heart a very serious school. Students are reminded that anyone can take a few classes of Kung Fu, but taking classes is not the same as studying. The study of Kung Fu truly takes years, even a life-time of devoted study and practice. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt - except for a little - to gain strength and flexibility for one's health and protection, and to gain some familiarity with forms for the sake of self-defense. The classroom is well-lit, large, use of space is economical, a small office sits off from the classroom proper, but with a good line-of-sight to the students. The instructors are "scary-good." I mean that as a compliment: they are knowledgeable, practiced, and committed. Practice comes relatively easy, knowledge takes years, commitment is up to the individual. The instructors do well at motivating, encouraging, correcting, and challenging. White Dragon Martial Arts offers a good start for anyone who wants to get a little exercise, tone their body, improve flexibility, lose fat, gain muscle, but especially and primarily it is ideal for the one who wants to study the science and art of Kung Fu seriously. (I think Greeley's White Dragon opened July or August 2013.)

There are a number of good reasons to attend these classes:…read more 1) like a lot of martial arts classes, a person's health and confidence are expanded 2) unlike a lot of martial arts classes, a person of any age can learn and benefit 3) we learn about internal healing side-by-side with attack/defense methods 4) Shrfu (meaning "teacher") is very skilled at both group training and individual training 5) class style varies over the course of a week, so we students get a lot of good exposure- I especially like Fridays, which close the week with a healthy dose of meditation and breathing 6) we learn some Chinese, which is totally cool! I took Hsing-I as a one-semester class about 15 years ago, and I absolutely fell in love with the style, philosophy, and simplicity. If I had stayed where I was, I'd have stuck with it, but I moved away shortly thereafter. Since then, I have moved around the country quite a lot, and I looked around for a Hsing-I school very often. I finally found one here in Denver that met my needs- affordability and good quality. I could not be more pleased with what we are taught and how it is taught. Anyone can, and should, learn and benefit from these classes.

Not only is Hsing-I a powerful fighting art it has true health benefits. We are taught how to find our center, use our bodies as a unit and the importance of meditation to the internal arts. I highly recommend Shrfu Brandon as a Hsing-I teacher and a Doctor of Chinese Medicine. If you know what Hsing-I is and want to learn do it with Shrfu Brandon.

Shifu Chao trained at the Song Shan Shaolin temple from young age, and will help you reach your full martial potential. You also have the opportunity to apply the theory in application drills in addition to all of your mabu, kicks, and forms. On the money side, I sometimes travel a lot for my work, so I would say this school is very understanding of these real world situations and extends out the term of your contract an equivalent amount of time, so you don't "lose" the training time on your contract. The class format - for good reason - is not like in China, where every student (could be hundreds or more) is learning the same forms together (the forms here are organized by belt level). As a result, the correct mechanics of the form are taught first, then technically refined over time once those have been demonstrated properly. In this way, all students can progress without taking up the whole class for just one form instruction. Also, very importantly, Shifu is always watching your body mechanics, stance, hand/feet position and work, point toe, etc. every step of the way and will call it out if incorrect or needs adjustment. This continuous feedback loop and attention to detail is critical for student's improvement. If you are interested in learning the Shaolin arts, look no further than Denver Shaolin Kung fu Academy. You will not regret it. Prepare to have fun!

The instructors are wonderful, very professional yet personable. High level techniques being shared here. With soo much experience on the mats you have lots of different Jiu-Jitsu styles to choose from. The amenities are exceptional. Nice clean bathrooms, changing rooms and showers. The front desk people are always smiling and helpful when you come in the door. While I haven't gotten to train the striking classes as I primarily train Jiu-Jitsu , they look like a lot of fun and they are training very hard with solid technique. They have lots of quality mat spaces for grappling and striking as well as workout equipment. There are many classes for people to choose from. Giving the most flexibility I have ever seen at a gym. Add in the elevation and the location of a beautiful mountain city, this is one of the best places to train in the country. I highly recommend the gym.
