The lunch restaurants nearby were beginning to fill up and the day was cold. We didn't want to eat on the main square with the inflated prices but didn't know where else to go. Not far off the square my wife just said, 'Here!' and walked toward the small inconspicuous cafe with traditional wood paneling out front. Just inside, I knew why she had chosen this place. It was calm, softly lit, and not too big or too small. Like Goldilocks, she knew it was just right. We were guided to a small corner table to our liking by a friendly waitress. This seemed like a place where the locals come. Some customers were being greeted like old friends. On this cold November day we wanted comfort food, and we found it. My wife had a croque which is what a sandwich is called. Hers was grilled ham and melted gruyere cheese. Excellent. She also had cauliflower soup, also excellent (not too rich) which made a great combination. I had the omelet Fritz with ham, cheese, onion, pepper. Also excellent! Of course, since the food was so good we had to try their appeltaart with ice cream with coffee for dessert. All through this time it was a joy to watch the waitresses and bartender plying their trade with smiles on their faces and kind words for others. They seemed to truly enjoy their work, and their enjoyment was part of the delicious meal we had. We thank them! After seeing the Ghent altarpiece, this small restaurant contributed to making our day in Ghent memorable. We thank them. read more
