Had my hair colored and cut by Lueria at Fringe Salon yesterday. She totally nailed both. I feel beautiful. As my natural color is a very dark brown, almost black it is really easy to get the "cat fur" look. Lueria is willing to use the color I purchase from Great Britain which is a more natural product, but takes longer to process. She talks to me about the products I need to use and I end up with bouncy, shiny long, dark hair. No one could be better at the job she does. Love the bright and upbeat vibe of the salon, along with all the products that are available. Will be coming back. read more

Jimmy is the best. I've waited to get in with him for what feels like eons...but finally, the hair gods smiled upon me and granted me a chance (and let's be honest, post Jimmy hairstyle, I will cancel a European vacay for him if it's in the way of a cut/color). Anyway, Jimmy spends the time...that's what makes him so special. He gives a lot of care to how you're gonna look walking out of the salon, and for days, months, years after so when you've woken up after your post salon chair blow out perfection hair, and realize you have to figure out how to look good again, it's not that hard. Okay, yes, he gave me the beach waves of a perfect mermaid queen, but after those beach waves left me...I still looked fab. He's the best, but don't book him and take an appt I need, bc he's my hairs everything. Can we talk about Lisa? Because Lisa is amazing. Obviously, Lisa works at Fringe. And she does wonderful things to my hair. And my mom's hair! My mom loves her work so much that every time she comes to visit me (from about 5-6 hours away), she makes a point of scheduling a cut with her. Her in-between cuts with her regular stylist down in Southern Oregon are but a sad whisper of the brilliance enacted upon her matronly noggin by Lisa. As for me? I am notoriously wishy-washy when it comes to my haircut. I don't really know what's up with all that crap growing on my head. But you know who does? Lisa. She has ideas. Plans, even! And she'll tell me about them and tweak them until we find something that is both stylish and something I can actually deal with at home, in my own completely inept way. Ever told a stylist you don't blow-dry only to be given a high-maintenance shag? Ever said you won't use product, and then walked out with a pixie and a bottle of expensive gel and weird sprays you don't know what to do with? Well that sucks, but come to Lisa and that will never happen again. Promise. And I don't know if it's just me, but I find getting hair cuts and styles to be kind of excruciatingly boring. It's one of the reasons I normally have long hair - who has time for all that sitting under a hair dryer and reading ladymags and whatever? Not me. I got shit to do. But! I have never left a review for a business as I've been in the service industry and I believe we're all just doing the best we can. But my experience with this one is rather strange. I was very excited to try this place.. unfortunately due to strange scheduling practices, this has been impossible. I called two days ago to inquire about an appointment since the website doesn't offer any information about scheduling. After the phone rang for what seemed like minutes, a frazzled person answered the phone. I asked if they cut men's hair and if I can make an appointment. They said they would look into and text me later.. an hour later I get a very unprofessionally formatted texted message asking if I wanted to schedule an appointment. Clearly I did (emphasis on did) since I called to schedule. Since then it's been a back and forth, with hours in between responses from the business. Finally when I got a text actually offering appointment availability, it was 11:30pm. What business it texting potential clients that late? When I provided the time I was interested in, I was told that I would actually need to schedule something earlier that day. Let's just say, the excitement I had is no longer there and I am very surprised this salon has any business since they can't even schedule an appointment. read more

Ana is amazing! Not only are her skills on point, but she is the type of stylist who really listens to your wants and needs, which we all know can be hit or miss. The salon is great, too! Smaller, with just enough detail and a really comfortable feel. Everyone seemed to know each other well, and when there's repeat clientele every direction you look, you know that's a good sign. Ana has been doing my hair for nearly 3 years, and never waivers on taking her time to deliver the best final product, all the way through to the styling. Yes!! I popped in to talk to someone about concerns I had about the health of my hair since my regular stylist was out of town. Katrina at Fringe was really helpful and answered all my questions. She even provided ideas for what I could do to keep the health of my hair. When my appointment came, she had really great ideas for what would compliment me and went to work on a balayage. She incorporated some babylights to pull the look together. She was incredible, she spent hours blending the colors- you can tell it's a true art for her. Her cut was fabulous as well! Just got my haircut yesterday with Ana, and I love it! She really takes a lot of time to ask you questions about your likes/dislikes and listens really attentively and almost immediately understood my hair and what it would do/not do. I'm very picky about haircuts and have had a lot over the years that I was either generally dissatisfied by or truly hated; and have been shocked by the number of hairstylists who after spending thirty minutes cutting my hair, would go to blowdry it and say "wow, you have a lot of hair!" (how did you notice this while cutting it?). Not Ana! She understood my hair right away. I used to live in New York, and had found a woman there that I trusted and usually only went to her, even after moving to Philly, I gave up on finding someone in Philly and just made excuses to hop up to NYC to visit friends and get a haircut), but after moving out here and spending 7 months hoping that I'd find myself back in NYC for a visit or a work trip and realizing it wasn't going to happen any time soon, I decided to look for someone in Portland. I saw the reviews that Ana really takes time to listen to what you want--and all the reviews were right. She spent a long time asking me what I want, what I like, what I don't like, a lot of time feeling and playing with my hair and asking me more questions and follow up questions. And then she gave me an amazing haircut. I'm emailing my old stylists to let her know I've finally found someone else I can trust. And we had a great conversation! I can't speak to the other stylists, though they also all seemed very personable and the folks I saw leaving the salon looked like they had good haircuts. (helpful context for reader: I am white, have medium/light brown hair, with a lot of fine hair that usually needs to be thinned and layered in order to not be weighed down, but the wrong cut and it just falls all the wrong ways when I let it air dry; it's more wavy than straight, but is somewhere inbetween. I'm sad that I have to be the first one to write a one-star review, being led astray by Yelp. I went to Christen and I told her that I wanted burgundy, wine-colored streaks in my hair that is already naturally curly with highlights and lowlights. She put them on and basically they were so light that she couldn't even find them after she washed my hair. She literally made me walk around the salon - with a hand mirror - to find direct natural sunlight and she STILL couldn't find them. She tried to convince me otherwise, but I called the next day and told her we needed to redo it (after it cost more than the highest price she had told me it would be). After debating with her for 30 minutes about how I just wanted my streaks to be the color of the hair swatch sample we agreed on before, she did it again. It was still nowhere near the color I wanted and it has been 3 weeks and its already basically all washed out. I know that the salon rents out each space and the manager doesn't really do personal business with them, so I don't hold it against the salon. If you have a problem, its basically your and your stylists problem. Personally, I like to know that someone can and will be held accountable if they f* up my hair. AND, and I almost got a parking ticket right when she was finishing my hair for being 12 minutes over. read more

This place is great and Glenn is the MAN! I've been going to this salon for more than a year and my review is well overdue! I walked in one day asking about a good colorist. I was given several names of gals there, but was told that Glenn was the best. I was able to quickly make an appointment with Glenn and have never been sorry! He definitely has his opinions on what looks good, but will listen and cut or color your hair the way you want to. That's awesome! Nothing worse than telling your stylist how you want your hair and then they do it their way anyhow! Seriously! I've argued with Glenn's opinion on occasion and he's always done what I asked, even though I usually go back the next time and say, 'Ok, You were right, let's do it your way' He never overcharges for services you don't need. I spent several hours having corrective color done by Bryce a week ago. I wanted to go bright copper-red from permanent black and was prepared to have my hair FRIED! But that did not happen. I had several processes done in one day, permanent red dye (on the 3-4 inches of new growth), then a billion foils (I have a LOT of hair) to evenly lift the very bad black (and other red) that I had done myself, without toasting my whole head. "Poor Bryce," I thought the whole time. But he never lost his cool (like hair dressers have in the past.) He did not show an ounce of frustration. He made me feel like this was the most fun he's ever had doing hair, though I know it was NOT!! I could not believe he got it to lift to blonde! Then, he glossed it with the red I wanted (a slightly darker tone at his professional suggestion, as to avoid a "streaky" look - which I hate) and deep conditioned it. Not only was he able to make it look like a million bucks... But my hair is still shiny and soft. I can't believe it! Even after shampooing it I can still run my finger through it with no problem. Which I did not think was possible. At least, it has never happened in my experience with "bleaching" or permanent dyes. Great job! I will never do my own hair again. read more

Got an awesome cut and style from Carrie with new bangs.. so glad she was the one I trusted to do them. They turned out perfect! Shaggy, yet really cute and modern. She gets it. After the cut, Laura fixed my warm roots and made me blonde again The time and expertise she put into it was impressive. With all of that processing my hair still came out soft as silk. I've totally found my new Portland hair ladies.. and I couldn't be more excited about the possibilities! Both made me feel super comfortable and the place is so freaking cute!! The salon is great but the real reason I go there is because of Candice's ability to understand what I want in a haircut and execute it with ease. I followed Christen here from Pulse which is saying a lot because Pulse was within walking distance of my office and this salon is not. However, she is worth the trip! Christen has been cutting my hair for over a year and always makes it look great. She's got the color perfect and can adjust the cut based on my not so helpful directions when I come in(I hate the bangs!). She also interprets photos if you like to work that way- she'll do it but will make it work with your hair. I also love that she'll style my hair a different way everytime if I want. So if I want it curly she'll do curls but straight- we go straight. It's fun to leave with a new look but know that when I wash it the underlying cut will work for me. About the only other thing I will say about this salon is that they have the most uncomfortable shampoo chairs I have ever been in. They are so low that even as a tall person my neck does not comfortably reach the sink. I leave with a stiff neck which is not fun. If this can be fixed please do!! No matter what, though, Christen is a great stylist! read more
