I had a scalp treatment, hair cut, and color with Melinda and it was uh-maaaazing. Melinda recently migrated north and landed at Oranj and her decades long hair experience made the whole appointment feel effortless. I'm always indecisive about my hair but she listened to my concerns and my desires and she really delivered. I like my length but my curls were falling flat so she gave me some layers that added the bounce I desperately needed. I also am struggling with postpartum hair loss and she recommended a scalp treatment which was relaxing and made my hair feel alive again. I wanted a pop of color but nothing too wild because I have some weddings coming up and of course I was concerned about my hair thinning. We added a soft reddish brown around my face and she eased my worries by keeping the color off of my scalp. Overall, my hair is feeling alive and is finally thriving. Also the space was well curated with a great selection of records, an intriguing collaborative art display, a cute second hand retail shop in the back, and plenty of things to sip on during our long appointment. I am thrilled with the haircut I got from Amita. I usually default to expertise of the stylist but I do have my preferences. I think Amita sensed it. Not only did we talk about the look I was going for she actually moved pieces of hair around to simulate the look I was hoping to achieve. It helped tremendously. I'd always had a great experience at Oranj until recently. And now that Cassandra and Kevin are at Window Wall on SE 11th, I see no reason to return. The thing is, I like to leave my options open when it comes to salons in town (you never know when you'll have a hair emergency and need a place ASAP!), but after my last interaction with the owner, I don't see how I could go back. On Wednesday, Jan 2, I called them with some feedback to help them. I felt they should know they were doing something that made them look bad -- sending out appointment cancellation notices that were worded poorly with regards to Cassandra's leaving. I called because I gave them the benefit of the doubt - they probably didn't realize how the computer was generating the txt and I wanted them to know they looked unprofessional. Rather than thanking me for bothering to inform them politely of their faux pas, the owner got defensive, implied that the txt's wording was intentional, and was generally not open to hearing the feedback. It'd be like notifying someone that they're walking around with toilet paper stuck to their shoe and in stead of their saying, "oh my gosh, I'm embarrassed but boy am I glad you told me!," the response was, "it's the bathroom's fault and who are you to tell me what my shoes should look like?" That's not the kind of customer service I'm looking for. read more

It takes a lot for me to write a review on Yelp, more so a positive review. I have had every single bad experience with hair salons you can think of, so I was super hesitant to make an appointment in the first place. I'll just start off by saying that the atmosphere and people are so laid back and welcoming. Everyone is so unique and makes the atmosphere and experience that much better! I called last minute to get in for cut and color, and they got me scheduled same day which was awesome. When you arrive, you are given a drink menu and have your choice of a complimentary beer, glass of wine, water, or tea. I honestly felt like my stylist listened to everything I said, and took it all in to consideration. Another bonus is the chairs at rinse sinks are massage chairs, which is paired with the best scalp massage ever! They use products that are not tested on animals, and they don't use 1,000 things in your hair to get you to buy their products. Nothing more frustrating than getting home and showering and trying to do what the stylist did...but not having ANY of the billion products they used. I would highly recommend making an appointment with any stylist there. They are all extremely talented! read more

I've been seeing Tamara now for 8 years, and I plan to continue seeing her as long as she's in the business. She is sweet, engaging, funny, warm and incredibly talented. When I arrive, she hugs me and gives me wine. Who wouldn't like that? She's also remarkably consistent; I've never had a bad haircut. She encourages me to try new things each time I go in, and I'm always pleased with the result. I've probably referred 20 people to Tamara over the years and they've all adored her and what she's done with their hair. Oranj Studio's services aren't cheap, but you most certainly get what you pay for. Tamara vets her stylists and staff very carefully, and they're worth every penny. Everything about Oranj is awesome. The space, the people, and especially how you feel when you leave. I have seen both Tamara and Steven and I trust them entirely with my hair. My style is pretty simple but they have both made me walk out of the salon feeling like a new woman :) The environment when you go to get your hair done is hip and most of all welcoming, down to every detail they make you feel so comfortable. They also have especially amazing products that I haven't seen around town. I have seen Cassandra twice now. The first time I saw her, I explained what was bothering me about my hair, and she texturized it in a manner that let me keep the length but fixed exactly what my issue was. Completely resolved it, actually, and gave me one of the best haircuts I have had in a long time! A month later, though, I was having a hair emergency- I had been a hair model and I received a Joan Jett mullet that looked awesome on other people but looked terrible on me. I was pinning back my hair or wearing a hat ever day. So I booked my second appointment with Cassandra, and she cut me the cutest little bob I have ever had. I was a little shocked at first because I have never had my hair this short before, and it did take me a couple of days to adjust. But I have received so many complements and even been stopped in the street and asked who did my hair. It is really just a great, great haircut. I've been coming here since I moved to Portland and let me tell you how much I hate finding a new hair dresser. It's a painful process, one that I like to compare to the dating scene. You've heard from a friend of a friend that this person is fantastic and you finally decide to pull the trigger and go for it. Worst case scenario is that you see them, chat, don't feel any chemistry but you let them have a go anyway. You end of with a mess on your hands that will take you months to recover from. In the best case scenario, you meet an awesome person, you connect, they get you, understands what you want and you have a long meaningful relationship plus a rad haircut. Steven is great. From the massage-shampoo to the final blow-out, I was handled with genuine care and gentleness. Laura was an INCREDIBLE stylist, who emanated soothing vibes and professionalism. She took the time to understand exactly what I wanted, offered her own advice about bang lengths that would suit my face (but never pushed me out of my comfort zone), and explained what she was doing every step of the way. I haven't had bangs (or even layered) my hair in over a decade, and so the final result blew me away! I started going here in the fall of 2010, hoping to find just the right local salon to keep my hair short and current. My stylist Lindsay is a really great girl, she does a great job, and I love going to see her. I also enjoy the atmosphere and spunki-ness of the place, its fun to go there. It's sort of pop-minimalist-modern. The chairs have a built in massage function that works its magic while you get shampoo'd and a scalp massage. I also like that I can get free trims in between cuts, that makes it more affordable to keep coming back. read more

When I first made my appointment here, I was afraid that I wasn't hip enough to get my hair cut here. I'm a 40-something profressional who should pay more attention to her long locks than she does. In fact, my last hair color was 9 months prior and my last haircut was 5 months prior. I have a lot of hair that is slightly wavy. Whenever I get my hair cut it requires a lot, I mean a lot of texturing to make it look well kept. I came in for highlights (blond highlights hide the gray peeking out of my brunette head) and haircut. Steven did a wonderful job on my hair. Even though he looks incredibly hip, he is a boy from a small town near Portland. Hearing his small town roots instantly made me feel more connected to him and less like a square in a really cool salon. The full body massage chair at the hair washing station was way better than I expected. The prices, well, it ain't cheap, but it is not the most I've ever spend on my hair. The phone appt and front desk staff were very friendly. While I have typically been a drifter when it comes to hair salons, I think I have found my home at Oranj with Steven. read more
