I was initially very nervous to go see him because of past experiences, but I was told by another clinic to go see Rich because in their words "he is the best Functional Medicine Doctor on the West Coast". From my first conversation with him, Rich has made me feel at ease, he actively listens, asks the right questions, and problem solves with me to find the most appropriate solution. Upon completion of a thorough questionnaire & eval, he pinpointed the root cause of my issue to be an allergy to gluten, dairy & a deficiency in a vit/min. He not only gave me the tools needed to make changes to diet, stress, sleep, self-care, relationships, etc; he supported me through each step. What I think is incredible about Rich, is that he takes a holistic approach. He not only treats the condition, it's underlying causes but he treats the whole person!!! He has not only been a doctor to me, but also a coach. He is kind, compassionate, extremely thorough & has excellent follow-through. Again, let me say that he is the BEST doctor!! Then, after one painful bloating incident, where others eating the same food had no issues, I decided to seek advice from Dr. Wong. From the beginning, Dr. Wong quickly educated me about her approach, how we would learn more about my situation, and how she proposed to treat my situation. Dr. Wong listened to me about my goals for myself, and we discussed a plan to which I was willing to commit. Within a few weeks of starting treatment, digestive changes were noticeable, and maybe I was also lucky that in a few months, my digestion became stable with regular healthy stool output. Through those observable improvements, I am certain Dr. Wong's treatments and advice, including a much reduced appreciation of wine, has resulted in distinctly improved digestion. As mentioned at the top, my body feels like it is internally working much better than before.

Upon pointing this out to her, she indicated it was probably fine anyway. I insisted we re-run it and it was a very typical clue to my diagnosis. It turned out I had a 3.5 cm nodule on my thyroid which was cancerous and a parathyroid that had to be removed as it had stopped working. She was patient with her exam but unfortunately, all she did was to suggest to monitor my symptoms by downloading a generic wellness phone app. This was one of the worst diagnoses I have received from any doctor. The next day, I made an appointment outside One Medical with someone who could provide more helpful medical advice. On top of this, I received $$$ bill from One Medical. When I called their billing department to check on the bill, they thought I was calling to negotiate and they automatically reduced it in half. I complained to my employer who had to follow up with One Medical to sort out the coverage. Such a hassle, avoid and go to a real clinic and a real doctor.

I made the decision to start seeing Dr S due to some lingering post surgical pain that is not fully controlled with my (marvelous) osteopath in SF. I had noted how much that Dr S cares about each of his patients even before I started going there, and now that I am a patient here, I can see that this is definitely the case. My pain level waxes and wanes usually according to my work schedule ( work exacerbates the issue), or sometimes it can worsen (like 5 levels of intensity higher) from one day to the next for no apparent reason ( frustrating!). Dr S, Carrie, and Anne have all accommodated me when I have been in pain 'crisis'. I appreciate Dr S's multidisciplinary approach to pain management, he doesn't just glance at your chart then throw heavy duty narcotics at the problem. I have opportunity to recommend Dr S at my work and I have recommended him MANY times to people who are currently seeing other practitioners and are not improving at all or are in constant severe pain. I have yet to see if anyone will take me up on my recommendation. I feel that Dr S has been another 'godsend' to me. A few weeks back, I drew a depiction of where a severe pain flare-up was taking place in my neck, wrote a detailed note about the situation, and faxed it to the office even though it was the day that they are closed (Wed). Dr S himself called me that night, from home, to check on me and to squeeze me into his schedule for the upcoming Friday (my next day off). Not too many doctors provide that level of personalized care anymore, and I appreciate it tremendously. I'll point it out again-Carrie and Anne in the office are just as empathetic, helpful, caring, accommodating, and kind as Dr Schoenberger himself is. One small caveat-you may want to make sure that Paragon Paincare accepts your health insurance or is an in-network provider when you call to set up an intake appointment. He is 'out of network' on my plan, so it is a bit costly, HOWEVER, Dr S and his staff do everything that they can to ensure that I don't 'break the bank' by going to this office. In summary, Dr S has great rapport with patients, he uses a collaborative approach (collaborative with the patient, at least in my case)in coming up with creative solutions to keep me out of pain and keep me able to be working full time. He is also extremely knowledgeable, caring, and easy to get along with. It's never 'fun' going to any type of doctor, but Dr S, Carrie, and Anne go out of their way to make their patients as comfortable and calm as possible. I would recommend Dr S to anyone whose pain is not being adequately managed by their current practitioners.

I walked into the office that day having not slept well in 10 days due to pain and left feeling confident I had been given excellent care, a thorough examination, and treatment that allowed me to maintain my normal daily activities! Her words with respect to Caro's opinion: to a carpenter, everything looks like a hammer. It all felt a bit like guess-work, a.k.a. what I'd been doing in the confines of my own home prior to seeking treatment. A return visit to Dr. Caro is now not forthcoming. The two receptionists I dealt with were, sort of, two sides of the same coin: one was personable, efficient & present; the other one had an off-putting, distracted manner. The best bit was when she coughed directly & at length into the telephone receiver after asking me a question. Spoiler alert: I had to repeat the answer. After getting the usual who-are-you info. out of the way, I was told this: you'll be asked for a urine sample, so come prepared! I took that to mean that there would be no water fountain in the office & I had better schlep my own water to the appointment-which I did. Upon entering the office, I immediately saw a water cooler set up with cups for patients' use & I thought to myself, duh, it's a urologist's office, dummy. In addition to being told to come prepared, I was also told (in response to my direct question) that this office does indeed accept Blue Cross. My scheduled visit, not two days later, included the following information: as it's the beginning of the year, you may or may not receive a bill for our services. We may or may not be in network (for Blue Cross users). Had I known that at the outset, I would have gone elsewhere. -not keen to potentially pay up to 300 bucks for a urine test/urethra check. Then there's a mandatory waiting period before the operation (to avoid buyer's remorse?). The operation itself was brief and relatively painless. I only felt the needle for the first Novocaine shot, and I've felt worse shots at the dentist. The procedure lasted about 45 minutes, just the doctor and me, chatting and listening to music. This is way preferable to the woman's equivalent operation, which involves an OR, anesthesiologist, serious recuperation, etc. When I got home I applied ice packs (OK, frozen peas) as instructed and didn't have any swelling and only minor pain. The scars immediately after the surgery looked pretty bad, and some bruising developed. I'm kind of glad it was a holiday the day after the procedure, but I was back to work (sitting at a computer) two days after. I felt OK, but took it easy and didn't climb stairs for a few days. The bruising disappeared in a week and the scars took about three weeks to completely disappear. The stitches dissolved and didn't require another visit to take out. Full, um, function returned in a week as the doctor estimated. Dr. Caro is friendly and professional, and obviously knows his stuff. I'd recommend him to anyone contemplating this procedure.
