My family stayed here for 3 nights and loved every minute of it. The hotel took care of our every need. We arrived late at night to check in and the chef offered to still stay up to cook us dinner, and it was amazing! Beat whiskey and Best Veggie Haggis I had on the entire trip! The rooms were beautiful and the location was perfect. Thank you for the free umbrellas, the free wifi, and letting us barrow some outlet converters. Special mention must be made of George who filled a role as kind of Night Porter and Barman. I can't personally comment on breakfast but the buffets and evening meals were very well served and cooked. The late-evening cheese board in the drawing room on our last night was practically a work of art. My twin room was slightly on the small side and I can only presume that the lack of a lock on the bathroom door was to stop children locking themselves in by accident. Being unable to stand for a shower was a mild inconvenience for myself and the guests who had a similar room (the Maids & Butlers snugs respectively) but an issue which could I'm sure be easily rectified with minor redecoration. Bar prices (Tennent's £3.60 a pint) were rather on the "captive market" side of the scale and a reduction where possible of those would I'm sure increase revenue from that quarter and stop folk nipping into Dumfries for supplies from the massive Tesco. Letting guests add their own level of sauce and pepper to their Bloody Marys was though a very nice flexible approach. The grounds are pleasingly landscaped and I imagine that in the warmer months are even more of a delight to amble around. All in a very good choice for an extended wedding or other family event.

The proprietress seemed confused that I was willing to pay the "double occupancy" rate for just myself. I don't get that about British lodgings. If you are renting a room, why not charge a fee for the room, not for the number of people who are going to be sleeping in it. I ran into this in a couple other towns as a bias--they would not rent to me since I was only one person, despite my willingness to pay the "double" rate. Anyway, I was willing to pay quite a bit more than she asked (£35, which, even with the exchange rate, was a total steal), so I guess that we both thought that we were making out like bandits. I had the excellent vegetarian breakfast in the morning. One nice touch was the candy bars for sale on a side table--on the honor system. I got a Snickers for later. The room was serviceable and comfortable, with the facilities that one would expect at this type of lodging at this price. It was clean and there was en suite bathroom and shower, and that's all I really cared about.

It's really huge and full of beautiful things - gifts, cards, crafts, maps, an exquisite tapestry hanging along one wall. There are interactive displays as well and everything is very eye-catching and enticing. The staff there were friendly and helpful. I go into tourist information centres in every town I visit and this has to be one of the best - if not THE best I've come across!!!

The tourist office is on whitesands in the centre of Dumfries, by the river and you get to it…read morethrough a very small courtyard. (It is signposted).The staff are extremely helpful, and as with all tourist offices, there are numerous leaflets and displays about local interests - small gift shop on the premises too. They give out free maps of Dumfries if you need one, and the maps themselves are easy to read and understand. Also have post cards of the local area which is useful, as not always easy to find in Dumfries.
