While the website (www.oldredbarnauction.com) gives you a good idea on whats going to be put up at the monthly (1st Sat of the month) auction, going there is a better idea. You can really see things and look them over carefully. They allow you in, give as much time as you would like and are helpful if you have questions. They have many pieces of furniture, much from older estates being sold. Some come in on consignment. There is artwork there, often some interesting pieces. They have old stoneware on occasion. Stamps come in from local dealers. China sets from "the old country" (which could be Russia, Belgium, Greece and any country in-between). Glassware from the 1920's. Leaded glass. Chandeliers. Some things will go for $10, others for $1,000. I have seen a few things go for much more. VIEWING is usually Friday afternoon before the auction, and Saturday afternoon just prior. Cash, MC, Visa, NO AMEX, local checks 15% BUYER'S FEE - I don't think there is a discount for cash. Seating is not super comfortable. but if you get there early enough its manageable. Or you can stand in the back area. Get there early on Saturday, parking will be difficult, at best. That's one annoying thing. The other is the cost of the food they serve. Ludicrous, and not good enough for the price. 5 stars because you don't go for the parking and food anyway, the auctioneer is good and he keeps things moving along.

There is also a staircase not far from the entrance which leads to the barn loft that overlooks the whole store; the walkways up here run throughout the barn, and are also packed with various items. I especially like this place for the variety of different items (primative crafts, dolls, old toys, some pottery, etc.). I've even seen some trench art items laying around. The owners here are willing to bargain within reason (mostly on more expensive items), which is also very beneficial. Combined with the other 2 antique stores on this road alone--not to mention elsewhere by Warwick--this is a must stop and one of the best antique shops in Orange County that I've encountered.

You will notice many reviews from folks who enjoy the experience of walking through and browsing. Unfortunately, for serious collectors, it runs into the problem that plagues most antique malls. Everything is priced at a level that expects negotiation, well above comparative prices. Pricing in the modern antique market has a lot of sources of prior sales. Unless the dealer is there or present, or you're local, you can't do that negotiation. So unsurprisingly, my only purchases were with dealers who were present at their stalls, and those were reasonable deals after they knocked some off the prices. The other issue is there are, or were when I was there, multiple points of sale across stalls rather than one counter, so it's sometimes a little unclear where you're supposed to pay for something, especially if you're using a credit card. My advice because of that, as with most antique shops, is to bring cash.

The woman working at the register, I believe she is the owner, was very kind and answered all of our questions happily. The prices were very reasonable and I ended up purchasing a lovely vintage perfume for $4! I look forward to the next time we stop by.
