Was craving a gyro and this place did not deliver. Ordered a gyro wrap combo and a steak and chicken platter. The wrap was ok but how can you get gyro meat wrong. The fries were limp and soggy and gross. Literally not edible but didn't want to make a fuss... shouldn't be served uncooked fries.. poor workers. The platter was not good. The steak and chicken were both dry dry dry. The best part of the meal was probably the harissa sauce which is probably bottled. Lastly, the rose lemonade... why? It tasted like dry lemonade mix with dried rose petals thrown in. I'd never come back and the I don't understand the good reviews. Yelp reviewers need to do better. read more

If you are reading this review and Fresh Mediterranean Express is open.. put your phone down and drive your ass there for a gyro. I cannot believe how close this is to where I live and I've lived there for 6 months and it took me that long to try it. I think the biggest problem with this place is the name Fresh. I drove past it so many times this winter thinking - ugh it's too cold for salad or just don't feel like eating healthy today. I dunno why I thought it was a salad bar. Oh well I just didn't read the Mediterranean part until I opened up Yelp! This is a fast casual place. You order at the counter and before you can finish reading the chalkboard menu your food is ready. I was like "damn they are faster than that sub place starting with JJ". I ordered a sautéed veggies on pita with spicy sauce. This is a solid 5 napkins meal. Like don't bring a date you want to impress because you will be covered in spicy sauce and tzaziki or maybe that's how you know he/she is a keeper (?) I got mine with the sautéed and cold veggies and my pita was awesome. Portions are perfect. Only word of caution if you are planing on taking this to-go and driving and eating then you better drive shirtless or with an enormous bib because you will get it everywhere. read more

If I lived in the area, I'd definitely be back again. It was clean, fast, healthy, simple good food with a Greek/Mediterranean influence. They had cucumber water out the day we visited - delicious. (Cucumber slices in ice water.) Adds such a nice flavor to plain old water. The owner had mentioned trying out different flavors too. They just opened three weeks ago, as of this review. Go check them out for lunch! Not cheap, but not terribly expensive, and likely a whole lot healthier than the other options in the area. read more

We were really excited to try this place, and it did not disappoint! I had the rice bowl with chicken, and my husband had the chicken platter with red pepper hummus. We shared with our 18 month old and she gobbled it up. Everything was fresh and flavorful, and quick as well! The service was spectacular- we spoke with the owner after we finished, and he was so gracious and kind, as was everyone we came into contact with! My wife and I just finished a great meal here. We had the Mediterranean sampler and two sandwiches, one gyro and one chicken kabob. The sampler was excellent with a wonderful homemade peanut sauce. The sandwiches were great and fresh as well, but the chicken kabob was the star if the sandwiches. Falafel was a part of the sampler and it was better than we have had. I hope everyone in the area tries this place! This is a special place that is very rare in the suburbs. I really like these Mediterranean fast food places showing up. They offer a healthier alternative that tastes good for a reasonable price. This one served me a very fresh falafel pita sandwich. They offered a wide choice of items and the falafel was hot. The sandwich was not as easy to eat as what they serve at a Garbonzo's, but it was very good. The staff was very friendly. I want to really like this place because it's the only one around and doesn't feel like a chain, but over the past year I've had two quality issues. One - hair in my food. Two - dirt on the lettuce in my salad. Both are disgusting and unacceptable. The management was very good about it both times, but food safety/quality is zero tolerance. read more

A bit pricey but it's good food and a great alternative when board with the standard pub fair in many near by places. Just had lunch there. Got the Gyro sandwich...based on taste and quantity I still prefer Ted's Coney Island over Mediterranean Express. Falafel were half the size of Ted's Falafel but the flavor was food. This is a decent spot for Waukee. At Ted's you can get it all in a basket for around $7 which includes fries, onion rings, coleslaw - a great deal! compared to Mediterranean express where JUST the sandwich is 7.99. Stopped in for lunch. I had the gyro sandwich with a side Greek salad. Both were great. Love the dressing on the salad. Shared a hummus appetizer with my wife. We both loved it and the pita bread is the freshest I've ever tasted. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is nice and the food is really good. This restaurant is one of the best I have been to I don't regret going there to eat. Everyone there was very friendly and seemed to be a family-owned restaurant. When someone came in they seemed to know every one of their costumes by name. I ate a chicken wrap and my mom ate a gyro. The food was very good but do not come here for the first week you get braces. I wanted to like this place so much. The one star is because I wanted to write a review. First off the skewers/kabobs were extremely dry and over cooked with the exception of the veggie skewer that was literally raw. The salads were to be modified with different ingredients...got then home and they were not. Also...they are very pricey for what you actually get. In addition to the actual food issues...the restraunt was a hot mess, nobody cleans the tables up after a guest dines (or their messy kids) and the "complimentary" cucumber lemon water is ALWAYS empty. My biggest turn off however was the obvious owner/manager. He was super loud, pushy and did not care to listen to any normal questions I had as it was my first time ordering from them. Obviously his arrogance impeded him from getting our order correct which was QUITE SIMPLE. Also...turn the music down a bit...maybe you might be to hear your customers??? read more

After visiting on three separate occasions and having three wrong orders I think I have decided to stop frequenting this establishment. The first issue was an order of veggie pita sandwiches only to have 2 kabobs show up. The second issue was when we returned to fix the first order and asked for veggie pita sandwiches only to have chicken pita sandwiches provided. The third and final was a similar order of a veggie meal and finding a piece of chicken and two pieces of steak in our order. The Spicy Gyro here, on it's own, is a very tasty sandwich. It's not the best gyro I've had but it's a very good "fast food" gyro. But add a side of jalapeño hummus and pita and you've got yourself one of the best fast food meals in the area. Too bad it's out in the middle of nowhere, but still worth a trip. read more

I would have chosen 0 stars if I could. I'm hoping that anyone leaving more than 1 star has never been to a REAL Mediterranean restaurant. Save your money and take a trip to Hy-Vee and buy the Gyro kit by Kronos...it's better and cheaper. We ordered the Gyro. $7.99 for just the sandwich. The meat is pre-sliced and there were only 4 slices. The tzatziki was flavor less. The side salads were okay. The cilantro lime dressing had dried cilantro and was very bland and mostly oil. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Shame they can call this Mediterranean. read more

I had heard many great things about this place. I never tried it until today because Mediterranean food is not my thing, but I am still giving this place the 5 stars they deserve. When you go in to order, it can get a little crammed because the line ends up right in front of the door. The menu was a little hard to read because it was handwritten and a little ways to the right of the cashier. But the line went quickly and the girl at the register was very knowledgeable about their offerings. After ordering we helped ourselves to their complimentary fresh fruit-infused water (cucumber). There is seating inside and outside. It was a beautiful day so we chose to sit outside. Within just a couple minutes of sitting down our food was out. Very fast! I ordered something very plain because I am not the biggest fan of this type of food, but everyone's plates at the table looked amazing! Everything was so fresh and plated well. You get a good amount of food for a pretty good price. (Bonus- I checked in on Yelp while waiting in line and got a 10% off coupon!) We didn't see anywhere to return our trays and baskets outside so we had to go back in to return them and dump our trash, and it was very crowded, but otherwise it was a great experience!
