I dont make it out to this side of town. Since I knew that i was headed over this way i checked yelp and so glad i did. This Express sounded quick and yummy. I walked in to the small deli sized shop on a chilly November afternoon. I was greeted with multiple smiles coming from behind the counter. The gentleman who stood behind the register asked me what I wanted. I let him know i was here for the first time and he was excited to tell me what people really enjoyed here. The menu was up on the wall with lots of choices but he had me at gyro. I could see the fresh ingredients right behind the counter so i felt like i was in good hands with the creation of my quick lunch. The inside was small, only about 5 tables and a few counter places to sit. The menu is a chalkboard but its clean and easy to read. There is complementary water. They were working on my order and taking phone orders at the same time. I was having a later lunch about 1 so there was a place for me to sit. I barley got seated and my food was on my table. I had the gyro. It was flavorful meat and fresh vegetables, sauce and bread. I was happily impressed and easily filled up by the size of the portion that was stuffed in there. The staff was attentive and checked up on me to make sure I was enjoying the meal. I let them know it was really good. Luckily sitting there allowed me time to look around the interior of the place. I could see the quick grab options on the other side of the entrance. You could grab drinks or fresh hummus or other goodies. I decided to get the hummus and they let me know what they make it in house. I thought the entire stop was worth it. The experience and attitude of everyone was positive and the food was good., I would go back in a heartbeat if someone asked me bout it. Wish there was one close to my side of town. read more

It's kind of funny that this is probably my favorite Mediterranean food in the Des Moines area, despite the fact that it's basically a Mediterranean Chipotle in a depressing suburban strip mall; the opposite of the cozy, rustic Greek and Lebanese places you'll find closer to downtown. But they really do prioritize freshness, and that makes their food worth the price. There are always lots of veggies, the dressings are light and flavorful, and the meats are fresh and well-seasoned, as well as the falafel. Unless it's a nice day and you can eat outside on the patio, it's not a very comfortable dine-in experience (as other reviewers have noted). But it's hard for me to fault them for that; it does have *express* in the name, after all -- and a drive through that is always busy. Of all the takeout options I have in the area, this is probably the freshest and most satisfying. read more

I would be prone to give this a higher rating, but the reason for the 3 stars is as follows: 1) The girl who always works at the drive thru window is rather rude/seems annoyed most often when taking your order. She doesn't give you time to understand all that she is rattling off, and overall just is not what I would consider pleasant. Her attitude is probably the biggest turnoff in coming to this place. 2) Dressing is an extra $.75 each. They give you one small dressing for one medium salad. If I am paying $12 + for a salad, the least you could do would be to provide adequate dressing. 3) Refer to #2. I spent close to $14 my last visit for a medium-sized salad and paid for 2 additional dressing. Seems pretty damn expensive. I could go to Saint's next door and get a salmon meal with two sides for that. read more

Finally!!! I have been searching long and hard for an amazing Mediterranean place that satisfied my taste buds in DSM. I just moved from Chicago so I was a little spoiled in this cuisine. That being said Fresh Med Express is the spot! Their portions are huge and reasonably priced, everything is fresh, and for those veggies out there- their falafels are killer! They actually taste like falafels should - not like grease and fried batter. Bonus they have a quaint patio area and are close to the Palms if you were wanting to get dinner and a movie! read more

I can't rave enough about this place! I've tried a few Mediterranean restaurants in the metro and I don't like any as well as Fresh. The falafel are so amazing and the harissa hummus is spicy, but delicious. I've never had anything bad from Fresh and will continue to go back as often as my wallet allows. One of my favorite spots in Waukee. The tapas platter is a great meal if you want to try a few things. Definitely recommend the pita sandwich and any of the hummus. Falafel and steak are also great. I love to stop in for a quick lunch/dinner but it's also a great option for appetizers or hosting dinner parties. read more

Came here for lunch with a coworker and it didn't disappoint. We both ordered kabobs amd sweet potato fries. For something as simple as a kabobs, they were just bursting with flavor and cooked perfectly. The cashier warned us that the steak kabobs would take longer to cook but I felt like our food came quickly. Its pretty nice to have a place close by that was some healthier lunch options. I really like the food here and it is a healthier alternative to other fast food places with a drive thru. It's rare for me to come here, however, as the pricing is a little outrageous. I got a chicken gyro and side Greek salad for a total of nearly 19 dollars. I like to support local restaurants but it's hard to justify that amount for lunch often. read more

The good things: lots of options including vegetarian, tons of customization spicy non spicy, sauces, fillings etc. I tried chicken, lamb gyros , rice bowls and falafel- everything tasted Fresh and good quality but don't expect a big portion sizes. The bad: Some of the fillings like feta and olives are additional charge 50cents each but they won't mention that while ordering, be careful of that. Also, with so many customizations I found it easier to order online so you don't miss anything. I'm so bummed we won't be able to go to this restaurant anymore. The food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and it's a non-chain restaurant. However, this is the 2nd if not 3rd time I've had a hair in my food. This time I asked the owner if everyone was wearing hats or hairnets and he confirmed they were, but when I looked at the staff preparing food that was not the case. very disappointed in the prices, i remember trying it for the first time and this place becoming one of my favorite food spots, until prices starting going up every year and have essentially almost doubled the cost, and the portions have significantly gotten smaller. i remember getting a gyro sandwich for $8, and a fresh platter for $12. now a sandwich costs $15 and a platter is $16. seems like every year prices get higher, portions get smaller and this is unacceptable. as much as i love this place, me and my family will never be back until prices are reasonable again and portion sizes return to their original amount. read more

We went to Fresh Mediterranean for the first time today. Food was excellent - we got a mix of the chicken, Moroccan chicken, steak and veggie skewers and they all were cooked and seasoned perfectly. One in our party got a Greek salad with gyro meat which was excellent as well. Also, the complimentary water (with cucumber and strawberry) was an excellent refreshing touch for flavored water lovers. We did have a few issues/mix ups though. We ordered our food 'for here' but they brought out all the skewers in a catering container and didn't bring plates or silverware and the salad was boxed up. Also, they automatically served a peanut sauce on the side with the skewers instead of the tzatziki sauce which we would have expected. Especially annoying since we had a peanut allergy in our party and there was no mention of the peanut sauce on the menu with the skewers. Both of these issues were respectfully addressed by the staff though (they brought us plates and silverware and exchanged our peanut sauce for tzatziki. Lastly, the menu inside the store is generally confusing - not a great list of what comes with what (especially if you aren't used to the "Iowa" Mediterranean definitions of Mediterranean food). I would definitely look at the (better) online menu before you come for the first time. Still gets a solid 4 starts for food quality and we will definitely be back, just would like to see some of those kinks worked out read more
