Yummmmm! We get Fresh Mediterranean Express for our work lunches, so I've never actually set foot in this place, but I've eaten from there many times. I typically get the mediterranean tapas with tzatzaki sauce. At first, I thought the portions looked a little small, but once I ate everything on my plate, I was full, and didn't need any more. I'm not a hug fan of Greek food in general, but this place has changed my mind. Everything I've gotten has been fresh and hot (even after being transported). Stopped by late one evening last week. Here is what I like the gyro tastes like lamb and has a great mix of the traditional flavors. they have many sauce options as well. Great gyro. I got the spicy one and it didn't disappoint. Very nice menu, but it is only Mediterranean food, so if you are with picky eaters they will have a hard time finding something to eat. Delicious Mediterranean cafe! It's on the end next to Subway (and 5,000 times healthier than Subway in my opinion) and was a little tough to spot from the street, but it's there! Love the "small town" vibe, chalkboard menu and friendly owners! I had the Gyro with olive oil (although they have a lot of sauces that sound delicious) and my husband the Kabab sandwich, and we both had red pepper hummus. All was absolutely delicious! They were out of the baklava and were making it at the time, so we'll definitely be back and try it. Love the emphasis of wholesome ingredients. They've only been open 3 weeks. I stopped by here with my coworkers for lunch looking for a good gyro. What I got was a small gyro that had no other taste other than onions and cucumbers. It was fresh, but lacked meat and sauce. All my workers said the same thing. One of us got regular fries which were borderline soggy, and others got sweet potatoe fries which were pretty good. Ice tea drink we got had no sugar at all and tasted bland. I, nor anyone from my 4 person group would return to this place. Been here over half dozen times and the foods fresh and delicious. Service is pretty good, never had a bad experience with anyone and everyone seems to have a smile on their face. My only cons about this place are that you have to pay for extra dipping sauces (I understand if I asked for 10 but I asked for 2) and that the fries are honestly very disappointing, they taste soggy and have no crispness to them whatsoever. As some of the other reviews state, yes this place is a little more expensive than your average fast food, but in my opinion it's worth the price because you're eating real food, not 70% beef w fillers and preservatives. I am rating it a 2 star because when I ordered the rice bowl, I expected the bill to be something close to what's shown on the menu, but I was charged extra for the toppings which was not mentioned by the person taking the order. Having never been here before, I was a little thrown back when asked at the drive-thru, "What dressing with your Greek salad?" (Greek?). As it turns out they do not have Greek dressing. It's so nice to have an alternative to your regular fast food selection in Iowa. I had the tapas dish so I was able to try a little if everything. The beef and chicken kabobs were delicious and paired well with the spicy mayo. I also was able to try the other sauces available and the peanut sauce went very well with the chicken. I had never had falafel before but now I'm a huge fan! I will be back for more:) The best however was the perfectly creamy hummus. I would eat that all day with the lightly toasted pita bread! I was pretty hungry so I also ordered the yummy sweet potato fries since I just can't pass those up if they are on a menu. The atmosphere is very modern and clean and feels welcoming. I had our three kiddos and needed a quick lunch as we were running errands. They might as well leave the "express" out of the business name. I ordered a chicken kabob pita sandwich, the kids kabobs, (one steak and one chicken), and a side salad that was made to order. We waited at least 15-20 minutes for our food, which was not what I expected from a "express" type restaurant. The food came and the meat chunks on the kids kabobs were so large I had to use a plastic knife and fork to cut it up for them. The peanut side sauce was fabulous, and the kids gobbled them right up. I went to eat my salad after I had already dressed it with the creamy parmesan (amazing) and I noticed it was loaded with onions and I ordered my salad with out. By this time I hadn't even had a chance to eat my kabob wrap and I asked the register gal if she could make my new salad and wrap up my kabob sandwich to go, as by this time the kids were done sitting there. I noticed while we were waiting they had two women come into the restaurant and have them fix their orders as well so I know I wasn't the only one with an issue, one was a drive-thru order too. They made my new salad to go, and I noticed there weren't any olives like I ordered so I had the gal add some. In the meantime, while waiting for them to bag my stuff I ordered two baklava's and 2 fruit kabobs to go. They had to go to the back to make the fruit kabobs (which were all grapes and one strawberry on top), and in the mean time the register gal lost my kabob sandwich the other worker had already wrapped, and forgotten my baklava. Finally, I got my items and left. I ate my salad and the kabob wrap at home. The chicken was flavorful and the sauce was outstanding. If it wasn't for all the side issues I would have rated this a 5 star. I understand that new businesses have their kinks to work out, but it almost makes me not want to come back. I had the original gyro which was really good. Meat was juicy and the veggies were fresh. I also ordered the original hummus which was ok. I was hoping for a little bit more originality from a locally produced item. Not bad just ok. One thing that really bummed me out is the baklava. As someone that grew up frequenting small Greek diners/fast food joints, it's a welcome sight to see an authentic Mediterranean restaurant open up in the suburbs of Des Moines. For the most part, the gyros, baklava, and chicken souvlaki stay true to their traditional roots. Fresh vegetables, herbs, and hummus. I do wish their gyros were off of a spit and they gave you more than 4 slices of pita for a side of hummus, but hey, I'm just happy a restaurant in this town even knows what fresh Tzatzki sauce is all about! If you're around the Waukee area, I would highly recommend this place for quick lunch. Plan to eat outside or take-out because seating is seriously limited. read more
