Frensham Great Pond and Common covers roughly 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of attractive countryside as well as the lakes and is owned by the National Trust. It is a Green Flag Award winning site, situated between Farnham and Hindhead, on either side of the A287. The site also includes Frensham Little Pond, on the other side of the A287 from the Great Pond.
Frensham Little Pond and Great Pond were created in the 13th century, to supply fish to the Bishop of Winchester and his court, whilst visiting Farnham Castle. Today the pond and surrounding area is a sanctuary for wildlife and is internationally important for the variety of rare and endangered wildlife that thrive on the heath. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation. The heathland is a colourful mosaic of purple heathers, fragrant bright yellow gorse and rich green bracken. As well as bathing, the Common is a wonderful site for walking.
There is a large car park and cafe open at Frensham Great Pond all year round, and a visitor centre open in the summer. The Great Pond itself has a lovely expanse of natural beach, and is extremely popular with bathers in nice weather, so the car park is normally full by 10am on such occasions. The Little Pond has a car park and cafe too. Both have accessible toilets.
Swimming is allowed at the Great Pond, within the marked areas. No swimming is allowed at the Frensham Little Pond. No paddleboarding or inflatables are allowed at either site. No BBQs or bonfires are allowed across any of the Common, including the Ponds, because of a high risk of wildfires, due to the heathland nature of the site. read more
