The Frenchman is definitely a decent option for your stay in New Orleans, mainly because of the extremely nice staff, not to mention its affordable price (especially in the "off season" and weeknights, but weekends aren't too pricey either). In addition its location can't be beat if you want to stay in the "heart of it all," while not being on or too close to the mayhem that is Bourbon St. You can walk almost anywhere, as you're close to the Marigny, the Quarter and transportation to the Garden District, Uptown and Mid City.
Frenchman Street has a hip vibe with fantastic music coming at you at all angles. Note to those who need quiet when sleeping: the great music will be coming at you from all angles until laaaaate into the night. I love that, but it's not for everyone.
That said, you also should know that the average guest rooms are pretty modest: tiny and a bit shabby. Again, it's such an affordable option, so don't expect much in the way of amenities. Like so many other reviewers say if you want the luxury hotel experience rather than the quintessential charming little NOLA guest house experience, well, this is not the place for you. But you can stay at a W or Marriott in any city.
My room was directly on the lovely courtyard. This can be noisy as the housekeeping staff gets an early start, not to mention the guests coming/going at all hours and I do mean all!) The pool area is tiny, but fits in with the charm of the courtyard. Another positive would be how nice and accommodating the staff is, from the front desk to the housekeeping staff. They have a complimentary breakfast in the morning that includes cereal, breads/jam/butter, oatmeal, fruit, juice and coffee.
I thought the rooms could stand to have some updating. The bathroom is really dreary (and offers no privacy, nor did mine have a fan). I'd prefer there to be no TV than the clunky/useless early 90s model that's in the ugly entertainment center thing that doesn't at all go with the more interesting antique style furniture. Really, are you going to watch TV when you're in New Orleans? Probably not. Take it away :) One final negative and I hate to say this because I know such things are hard to control, but there was a big dead roach under the sink.
Overall, AOK is how I'd describe The Frenchman. Not as good value as say, Banana Courtyard (I need to keep them a secret because they are always sold out when I'm looking for a room), but not as much of a rip off as the place I stayed last year on Jackson Square. You're probably not going to spend much time in the room anyway, so all you really need is a close, clean and safe place to stay. This is it with the additional charming environs. read more
