I've been blonde for the past 5 years and was really really hesitant about changing my hair to a darker color. I was contemplating on going brunette for the past few months and was just so scared to change but I decided to go for it. Especially with the fall season rolling around. I made an appointment with one of the females, the color I wanted was not at all what I had asked for... at that point I wasn't even pissed because going into it I already had a feeling that I wasn't coming out with the color I asked for. (that's just from continuous bad experiences with different hair salons who just don't seem to get the color I ask for) Especially since my hair was already blonde I really didn't think that it would've been that hard to get my hair to be a light honey brown?? Instead I got nearly black/burgundy. Now I'd have to bleach again if I decided to go lighter... which is only going to do more damage to my hair which was what I was steering away from. The overall salon is gorgeous, all the stylists and workers there are sweet and kind. The female who did my hair was super kind and accommodating. I didn't get anything but a color change so I can't rate their blowouts/makeup service. side note: they don't take card.. Overall idk if id give this salon another shot, nor any other salon because never once have I left getting what I asked for 4/10 would recommend. read more

Kathy did a blow out for me on Friday and I don't know what she sprayed my hair with but my hair didn't have an ounce of frizz ! I was on a roof top party in Jersey city and it was 100 degrees by the water and my hair stayed beautifully ! The next day I had an appointment. at a local salon in Jersey city for another blowout because my hair ALWAYS gets frizzy during the night ! Well not this time!!! I cancelled the appointment ! On Saturday I went on a dinner cruise and my hair still didn't frizz at all and it was extremely hot!!! We left on Sunday and my hair still looked amazing !! It lasted 3 days ! I was amazed ! First of all, whoever answers the phone over there is incredibly rude and nasty. Very unprofessional. She was so rude that I called back and completely cancelled my appointment. Now that stylist lost a customer bc of her. Secondly, I don't recommend getting your hair done here anyway. The girl I went to the first time was not attentive at all. It's like a chop shop. If you're not getting a balayage they don't really care, they're quick to move on to the next. There's so many better stylists on the island than this place. read more

She answered my questions but sounded annoyed the whole time. She even hung up while I was still speaking! I would rate them zero stars if possible. I'm not the type to speak up or complain EVER but the girl who colored my hair did an awful job and I nicely asked if she could just dye it darker to cover it up. She was so so so annoyed and went to talk to the other stylists about me...which I heard. She did dye it, however, she could not blow dry my hair so I left the salon with wet hair and paid $150. Like for what. When I went home I called the manager and she told me that what was done to me "was costly for the salon and she could not issue a refund" and that "she did not have enough time to blow dry your hair" ok I should not have paid 150 to leave with wet hair. Everyone is rude and stuck up but hey it's Tottenville! Save your money and time and go elsewhere, thank me later read more

Nicely decorated salon. Great ambiance. Huge. Lots of staff. A place where you know you can confidently go to 75% of the girls here and come out looking good.... Only thing I don't like is that you have to request for the better brands of hair dye/products to be used on you because they will use the house product if you don't request what you prefer. Their house brand isn't bad, it's Schwarzkopf I believe, but I prefer Olaplaex since I'm blonde. But I guess that's how it is ....kind of like when you go to a bar, you have to be specific on what alcohol brand you want to be served so you don't get a hangover. Not really a big deal, just hopefully as the customer you know better to ask for what works best for you...4 stars not 5 because of this, on behalf of the blondes; especially since Olaplaex has become so well known. Thankfully, I knew to ask for it from my previous hair dresser......Although the hair dressers here have good techniques, I do wish they'd educate you on beneficial products and/or hair tips and tricks. Even if I have to order it online, I want to know what's good for my hair.... I live with my hair 365, whereas I'm in the salon every 4-8 weeks, so I need some guidance for everyday treatment. IMO that is what's lacking, educating the clients...... Also, the hair washing girls are often rude, very impatient and rough..... read more

Have been coming here for years. Julia literally saved my hair. When I first started coming to French twist my hair was a mess... so dry and damaged... She literally helped me achieve every hair goal I wanted. My hair is naturally very dark brown, through the years she has taken me from black box dye to a blonde baylage back to my dark brown.... all with little to no damage and leaving me able to keep my length She is a hair god and I can't thank her enough. I booked an appointment here for makeup two months in advance for the day of my baby shower, they booked me with their makeup artist Ally. The DAY BEFORE the event the makeup artist sends me a text she has something to do so she's cancelling the appointment. The salon themselves never even bothered to call me, apologize or issue any sort of accommodation whatsoever. Extremely unprofessional, i wouldn't recommend! read more

Not only am I never going back to this overpriced, stuck up establishment, I am also spreading the word to anyone I know. Worst customer service ever starting with the woman at the front desk who is rude and condescending. They messed up my appointment time claiming I made a different time than I really asked for and that I probably wouldn't be able to have my hair done since they were so busy. They also had me down for a totally different thing than I came there for. To top it all off at the end they tell you they don't accept credit cards, only cash! What a joke ! There's no signs anywhere indicating this at all. Plus who doesn't accept credit cards in the day and age? Sounds fishy to me! read more

I came to French Twist for my wedding day and I am SO glad I did! From booking them months ago to leaving there on my wedding day, they have been nothing short of amazing. I had 4 appointments including myself, for hair and makeup. Right when we walked in we were taken to our stylists right away. Never felt rushed and was never waiting to be seen , everything just went so smoothly. Customer service there is great. Quality was even better... all 4 of us left their feeling and looking amazing! Been going for many years...... Paris is wonderful , I highly recommend her for color. Angelic is also excellent . However, make sure to ask the exact price when using anyone new.....my daughter was just fleeced. She usually pays 80 to 100 dollars for a touch up on highlights and blowout. This time she unfortunately had to try a new girl, who charged her 190.00 for the exact same job. When she questioned as to why? Different hairdressers may charge different fees for service. Was given an appointment at 4:30 with Michelle. 4:40 we were still waiting, although other stylists appeared to be available. The place gets super busy on the weekends and sometimes it's tough to get an appointment with my girl, but I can't imagine going anywhere else. read more

I went here few months ago. In May. I keep meaning to write this post. When I arrived front desk was very very rude. Made me wait while my stylist and her friends were chatting and having coffee. Rolled her eyes and got annoyed when I told her it was past my appt time. Once seated I explained what i wanted. The stylist said she knew. A young thick girl. Blonde. As she started to cut my hair I had to keep telling her and showing her the picture that i needed her to cut it shorter. It wasn't a hard cut. A symmetrical Bob on thin hair. After 10 minutes of this. She says" no no this is good." (It was a straight old lady Bob). "If you want a short hair cut you have to go see one of the other stylists." I was like wtf are you kidding me? Clearly this young girl knew nothing of what she was doing. All the while she was rude and talking to the other girls about their vacations. Ignoring me and getting annoyed she had to keep getting interrupted. She kept combing my hair telling me to let it grow in when I wanted it short while she texted on her phone in between. Wtf? This place is expensive too. I left very upset and will never go back. I drove straight to super cuts in jersey. I showed stylist a picture. She said "you showed them that and this is what they did? " she couldn't believe it!!! The woman cut my hair exactly like the pic I had! I left happy and it cost me 12$. Be careful at French twist. It's very hit or miss. That is A chance you take there. Staff is very rude and for those prices you should be respected and treated friendly. Also hire ppl that actually know how to cut hair and give them all lessons on how to be friendly and courteous. I love French Twist! Renee gives the best men's cuts around, and the staff is super personable. I've never gotten my hair dyed here, but I wouldn't be opposed to it. Men's cuts are pretty cheap here, which is a huge plus for men who'd rather go to a female stylist (i.e. I'm a gay man, and in my opinion female stylists are more fun with whom to talk). I highly recommend French Twist, and though I've called and booked an appointment same-day, I'd definitely make an appointment before heading there. read more

Went to French twist for years and I agree with the other posts Raven and the other stylist are extremely talented. However the issue I run into is the way you are treated on the phone and when you walk in. Every time I've called to make an appointment I am put on hold for at least 10 minutes which I feel is unacceptable. When you walk in and approach the front desk no one greets you with a "hello" or "hi... How are you?"; there is only an unpleasant stare from the older woman at the desk who doesn't say anything besides you can get washed. I got married last year and wanted to have my bridesmaids and my hair and makeup done here. I was told I would have to wait for the book to come out which was three months before my wedding. Then no body wanted to work on a Sunday, I can literally here them arguing in the back about who was going to do it. Then they decided that a large deposit would scare me away. I decided to then go there and talk with someone. I was then talking to who apparently was the owner who basically said in so many words they don't want to do it. Considering another upscale salon just opened across the street, you would think they wanted the business but they didn't. Although the stylist are talented I refuse to return to a place that treats its clients in a "we don't need your business manner". read more

I have been going to this salon for almost a year now. I have had several blow outs by various girls which were all fantastic. Unfortunately, I recently had the worst experience with a girl whose name I cannot remember. This review is purely based on her. It is the one girl who sits to the right directly behind the register (blonde hair) and she is completely unprofessional, rude, and unskilled. I have never had a bad experience with this salon, but this girl essentially complained to me that I was there and wanted to charge me way more money than ever charged before at this salon. I believe the only reason my blow out was the price it was (still $10 more than my friends) was because the stylist asked the front desk what my friends were charged for their services. When told, she had a complete look of disgust. It was extremely impolite to make comments about price in front of me- does this salon not have standard pricing? Every blow out I have ever had there takes about a half hour- she for some reason wanted to make sure that "next time" I ask for an hour because there was no way she could complete my hair in the time allotted. I have never heard this from any other stylist, not to mention she took me 5-10 minutes after my appointment. She obviously is a little slower at her job. After sitting through this tortuous appointment my hair did not turn out anything like I asked for. I left disappointed and re-did my own hair. French Twist has always had great, fun, and talented employees- do not see this girl as she is the complete opposite of this. She needs a lesson on customer service and should go back to beauty school. read more
